— 6 years ago

2006 Sine Qua Non "The Raven" Series No. 5
I decided to cut my SQN French class today with all the new French named SQN labels and go slightly old school with the Raven. But instead, I found myself still mired squarely in the Northern Rhône Valley. Perhaps Manfred should have named this one “Corbeau” or “Noir Comme du Charbon” because this one has me thinking Guigal La La. As these older SQN’s age, they seem to take on more Northern Rhône characteristics. A blend of 93% Syrah, 5% Grenache, and 2% Viognier primarily from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard with small quantities from the Bien Nacido and White Hawk vineyards. Bottled after spending 22 months in oak casks. Potpourri of sweet black and blue fruits, forest floor, Asian spice, bacon fat, tar, black olives and spring flowers on the almost overwhelmingly sumptuous nose. Mind-blowing really.
On the palate, blackberry jam, cracked white pepper, cherries, cinnamon, tobacco and allspice. Opulent mouthfeel. Ethereal texture. Dense, seamless, elegant. Complex, bold, rich and layered. So much finesse. “Tres Bon”Mr. Krankl!

2011. Very young, certainly, but great with dinner. 2 hour decant and this would be a lot of fun. Slightly modern but when you don't have a bottle of Monprivato, what the hell. — 11 years ago
Last had 2 years ago and the extra time has been good to this. Really a lovely burgundy with some rotisserie chicken on the first snowy day of the season in New York. Red fruit, light earth, and minerality all in balance and expressing very nicely. Finishes with good acid and a real lift. Delicious. — 7 months ago

— 6 years ago
— 8 years ago
Tres intéressant après 2 heures d'aération. Devra être attendu wuelques années — 10 years ago
Chardonnay from Piemonte!?🤔
Roagna "Solea" 2012 is sourced from 30 year old vines in the Pira vineyard located within the village of Castiglione Falletto. A small percentage of Nebbiolo is cofermented in with the Chardonnay in large wooden casks, then aged in neutral barrels for 2 years.
Rich up front, a line of saline undercuts the richness. Fresh pear and lemon in the nose and palate. As the palate shifts to the back it becomes linear and minerally, awash in fresh acidity and a long, clean, mineral finish. #roagna — 10 years ago
Check-In, way too early needs lots of air! Very dense dark cherry fruit profile with Gevrey spice notes. Will try the 2018 again in 2 years…Cheers 🍇🍷👍🏻👏🏻 — 2 years ago
Great dinner Elaine’s 2/13/33 — 3 years ago
Expressive notes of dark fruits, spices and still some signs of oak, palate is medium bodied, fresh with depth and clean, nice texture, drinks easy, could benefit of 1-2 years in bottle, the 2017 drank earlier this year was even more ready. 89-90
89-90 — 5 years ago
Nice, ripe, modern delicious Barolo. Dang. This one has me leaning from the traditional. This wine is ready from cork pop, but was much better after 2 hrs of bottle decanting and probably has another 7 years left. Nose of herbs, soil, mushroom, cola, funeral flowers. Entry of flowers, raspberry cola, nice acidity and just a hair departed from full bodied. Complex. Beautiful wine. Finishes with some astringency and youthful oak tannin so this one has a while left. Tobacco, herb, soil. Dang. If you have these, now is the time. — 7 years ago
Hmmm...where did I leave off about four months ago? It certainly wasn’t with aged Nebbiolo, but that seems like a great place to pick back up. This was a splendid bottle and everything was in balance. Great nose, fruit present, nice finish. WOTN for me and top 1 or 2 for most. — 9 years ago
Starter of JL TASTING 6/2/16. Acidic almost savory on palate. Citrus. Medium finish. — 10 years ago

Darker color than the Fleurie, more dark fruited, on the one hand still grapey fruit, but accompanied by some good tannic structure and fine balancing acidity, much more youthful than the Fleurie as well, lingering finish, should continue to evolve for another 2-3 years, at least. — a month ago
