RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

Dark Ruby with dark berry fruit aromas, vanilla, cedar, baking and herb spice, fruit only from Barossa Valley, aged in French oak. On the palate this wine has complex flavors of blackberry and blueberry with licorice, cacao, oak and vanilla. Fine dusty tannins, peasant mouthfeel, full-bodied, long ending with a nice earthy spice finish. Aging well, good now, has room to age! — a month ago

Wynns Coonawarra Estate

Black Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 1996

Bought at the winery after tasting in 1999, my first pilgrimage to Coonawarra. Opened very stinky but blew off with air over 30 mins to beautiful fragrant nose and that sweet soft tannin of an aged Coonawarra Cabernet. Drank gloriously over the next two hours. Still full of life at 29 years old. — a month ago

John Duval Wines

Entity Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

A perfect balance between oak and fruit (blackberry) from this Barossa Shiraz. Great winemaking from John Duval who has quite the CV. John was Chief Winemaker at Penfolds from 1986 until 2002 being only the 3rd custodian of Penfolds Grange after Max Schubert (creator of Grange) and Don Ditter. In 2020 this wine received Shiraz of the Year and 99 points from the James Halliday Wine Companion. The product of old vines in the Barossa. Luscious but in balance and overall - delicious. — 3 months ago

Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

#AgedWineTuesday

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim. Not showing much age.

Beautiful nose of blueberries, blackberries, plums, cooked cherries, spices, licorice, cedar, earth, chocolates, vanilla, rhubarb and black pepper.

Medium plus in body and soft, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black currants, black plums, cherries, toast, cedar, light vanilla, mediterranean spices, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, earth and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia. Rich and elegant. Fruit forward and complex. Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Spicy and entertaining.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 60 minutes of airtime.

Robert Parker 91 points. Wine Spectator 91 points.

This 23 year old is drinking beautifully now and will continue to drink nicely in the next few years.

I've had a few vintages of this wine and it is very consistent.

Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food like lamb dishes.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were aged in all new American oak barrels for 14 months.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

94 points.

$225.

Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Dense crimson in colour - impenetrable. Strong aromas of mint. The excessive oak influence in Penfolds reds early in life has settled down after 15 years. All the individual components early on are now integrated settling in for a long life. Penfolds say to 2040. Ripe blackcurrant with plum, dark chocolate and liquorice notes. Bin 407 came about because of an embarrassment of Cabernet riches even after their flagship Bin 707. An excellent Cab - I now have 5 left for the coming decade or so. — 25 days ago

@Ira Schwartz, I lived on Cranberry Street in Brooklyn Heights in the 1980s, between Henry and Hicks, my favorite (1/2 block away) retailer was Marcolini Wines and Liquor (Armand Correia), who taught me SO MUCH about wine that I’m forever in his debt (sadly, he passed some years ago)!! He sourced that wine, my 2 cases of 1983 Fonsalette Cuvée Syrah, and MANY other wines for me, I cannot ever begin to repay his kindness and knowledge!!
@Ira Schwartz, if you ever watched “Moonstruck”, the store was in the movie on the corner of Cranberry and Hicks, right next to the apartment where Cher, Olympia Dukakis and the others lived, it was in one or two scenes. Also, we lived right next door to the Catholic Church shown early in the movie on Cranberry, when they were filming those scenes (at night), they had a trailer parked out front. One night, I got home from work, walked to Marcolini’s, grabbed a bottle of wine and headed back to our apartment (Co-op), and the trailer door opened, a pretty woman stepped out, who I proceeded to ALMOST run over, I said sorry ma’am, and 5 stepped later I realized I almost ran over CHER in my haste to get back and open that bottle of wine. TRUE STORY!!

Clonakilla

Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2014

This is generally regarded as the best example of Shiraz Viognier in Australia but recently I tried a 2015 Serrat Shiraz Viognier which was the equal of Clonakilla if not better. As per previous Delectable notes this bottle had the trademark dried spices, cloves a trace of pepper and dried meat. Barely medium weight and always a joy to drink. My last bottle. — 2 months ago

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Sunday Lunch with Roast Lamb. Deep Ruby in colour - very dense. A very Margaret River Cabernet - nose with herbs and a little mint. Barb thought a bit of capsicum (bell pepper) on the nose. On the medium bodied balanced palate the tannins are quite soft yet persistent. Leeuwin Estate better known for its outstanding Art Series Chardonnay has been working hard with the red varieties and it shows. — 3 months ago

I had the chance to taste couple older vintages (01 and 03) and was quite impressed. While price for the Chard is approaching $100 here, the Cab is still very reasonably priced. @Bob McDonald .

@Ming L Yes, the pricing differential between the 2 Cuvées is much the same here in Australia.
