Chablis Chardonnay 2019

Merry Christmas to all on Delectable. Aperitif for Christmas Eve dinner. Quitessential Chablis aromas of shellfish, nectarine, apple, and smoke. Light to medium body, with an exceptional texture for the level. Heaps of oyster shell in the mouth with ripping acidity. My only qualm was a slight lick of oxidative muskiness in the persistent finish. Overall, a solid village. — 4 years ago

Domaine William Fèvre

Les Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2007

Medium gold. Nice weight. Citrus and sea shell nose. Also notes of white stones, sweet kiwi and some tan spice. Rich and powerful in the mouth, a bit disjointed, but it began to come together with air. Shows a little more age than I would expect but its a nice drink now. — 7 years ago

Ziereisen

Gestad Syrah 2016

The only German Syrah I've ever tried is one I won't forget. So unnaproachable at first, a stone cold snub, dark like motor oil.

Meaty blood soaked liver, mint snuff, graphite, pencil shavings. Huge tannins to break down.

But find those little Syrah nuggets - metallic minerals and the tiniest bit of violet, and you realize there's something special here. It just takes a second to understand.

It’s the Ziereisen code - crack a thick outer shell, find a familiar friend.

More time in cellar and/or longer decant? Just too young? Curious about this wine

@ESF this doesn’t need anything else. Its a great wine. It’s just different and takes some easing in - my opinion only of course

Agrapart & Fils (Pascal Agrapart)

Minéral A Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs

May 2014 lot, degorged August 2019. 2020/12/31 with horsehair crab, karaage and toshikoshi soba. Deep aromas of brioche, pears and custard, oyster shell and stone. Steely and persistent, but with round richness to balance. Noticeably deeper, more powerful, more tangy and saline than the Terroirs. — 5 years ago

Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tasmania Chardonnay 2014

Pale Lemon in colour. Nutty and yeasty aromas. Quite lean on the palate - some would say Chablisesque but no oyster shell. Strong citric acid - some leesy notes. Ideally I would like to see riper mid palate fruit. — 6 years ago

Domaine du Vieux Chateau Vaillon Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2005

This was bomb. Fresh, terroir driven, complex and lengthy, a true wine of place and vintage. So much textural depth and grip as well. Struck flint, crushed oyster shell, crisp orchard fruits and lemon, sea spray, loads of earth and cheese rind. So vibrant and alive. I could drink this everyday — 7 years ago

Côte de Léchet Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2016

To begin, a very nice Côte de Léchet, but I think that Jean Dauvissat does this 1er Cru best.

Nose is cooked lemon, lemon pith, light/wet limestone and under-ripe white peach.

Palate has fresh, steamed lemon, crunchy oyster shell soup and lemon curd (light).

Solid wine, plus 2016, nice QPR.

Far Niente Winery

Napa Valley Chardonnay

One of CA's oldest wineries, Far Niente, founded in 1885 by world traveler John Benson. The winery flourished until Prohibition, at which time it was abandoned and fell into complete disrepair. The stately stone shell of a winery was purchased in 1979 by Gil Nickel. Tropical and stone fruit aromas with complex spice and oak notes. On the palate apple, melon and citrus flavors, creamy, with toasty oak, fig and honey tones. Lingering finish ending with vibrant acidity & mineral character. Consistent. Nice! — 8 years ago

La Forest Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay

Rather muted nose of oyster shell, lemon and flint - awesome evolution on the palate fatty in the middle with a lingering finish. Fantastic. Competes at GC level - this one feels a bit quieter at the start, but its lingering finale completes a perfect picture. Aerate. — 6 years ago

Butteaux Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 1996

Medium gold. Heavy in the glass. Opened decanted for an hour. Knockout nose. Notes of lemon, white stone with some oyster shell, and a bit of honey develops over time. Rich luscious fruit in the mouth. Acidity hides in the first few hours, then powers up. Great juice. — 7 years ago
