straw colored, pale watery rim; lemon, red apple skins, stone fruit, toast; wet stone, honey, clean, lively; medium body, good acidity, 13.5% ABV; made from 100% Chardonnay from famed Seven Springs Vineyard in Eola-Amity Hills, gentle whole cluster press, indigenous fermentation in once used barrels 500L puncheons, élevage 12 months in the once used barrels and puncheons and then 6 months in stainless steel; a great example of what Oregon Chardonnay can be and a bargain compared to many California Chardonnays; $35 — 4 years ago
Had this 2 yrs ago. Mather Teresina, flagship wine of Celler Vinos Piñol, made with grapes grown in high elevation region of Terra Alta. The nearly extinct Morenillo grape is indigenous to the area & makes Mather Teresina a unique wine, a blend of 50% Garnacha, 30% Cariñena & 20% Morenillo. Nice aromas of berries & sweet spice. On the palate cherry flavors with vanilla spice adding pepper notes on fine smooth tannins which opened much quicker. Long ending with sweet fruit tones & bits of earthy floral. — 4 years ago
Israeli pet Nat with dabuki, an indigenous grape in the blend.
Had the 2016 vintage a while ago. Progress is here, this is 2017.
2018 was released but my wine shop still lives in the past...
11.5% ABV
Strong yellow with tiny tiny bubbles 👀
Started lemon-ish but as it got warmer it was more stinky cheese factory with a horse stable next door 👃
Medium body.
High acidity.
Tiny Bubbles attack then funkness with lemon and added grapefruit bitterness 👄
Light and pleasant 🎯 with creaminess lingering.
A very pleasant one!
Made better impression on guests than yesterday's posh old vintage sparkling rose...
Excellent vfm (69 nis).
Better then 2016 vintage. Need to check 2018 now.
paired lovely with bread, butter and stinky cheese plate.
And some hummus, tahini , tomato salsa and jahnun. Great with bold food... — 5 years ago
2015 release. Enjoyed with friends Karen and Rick. Steak dinner at home. Wonderful example of Lodi Zin. — 6 years ago
This is one of my favorite white wines of all time and this vintage is the best I’ve ever tasted. Lemongrass, honey suckle, saline notes, mist, and slightly effervescent. Seaside liquid freshness with low acidity, low alcohol, but medium plus body. From an indigenous grape in Basque Country in Norther Spain, so pleasantly good, a crowd pleaser for sure! Good value to top it all off, hovering around the twenty some dollar range. — 3 years ago
Plummy dark fruit aromas together with earthy sooty notes - also liquorice. Medium plus weight with noticeable tannins and firm structure. The oak has integrated unlike my previous note 131 weeks ago when it was a tad obvious. The product of 3 indigenous Greek grape varieties which I’m sure you would not have heard of. Ultra savoury bordering on the astringent but overall I liked it. One of the 1001 Wines - I don’t see many Greek wines. — 4 years ago
Deep red color. Dark fruits, slightly spiced cinnamon. Tasty. — 4 years ago
One of Sir Elton’s finest. Pretty much perfect songwriting here. The wine is dense, yet juicy with bright acidity and powerful dark fruit. An indigenous variety from Romagna. Something I could drink pretty much forever. Beautiful wine. — 5 years ago
Really light and whispy citrus scent. Love with white pizza or fish — 5 years ago
Preparing for our adventure to Portugal Surdyks’ Recommendation:
(Douro) Portugal is a prolific wine country, best known for its sweet dessert wine - Port. World famous in its many styles, Port is sweet and fortified, prized for its rich flavors and lush texture. Portugal also has fabulous dry red wine. Dow’s “Vale do Bomfim” is made with the same grapes and sourced from the same historic Douro Valley that produces Dow’s great Ports. Portugal’s indigenous grapes – Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão – are names that should pique your interest and draw you to this imported discovery. Picked by hand and manually sorted with great care, the grapes are fermented in small vats. The resulting wine has complexity and style. Portugal’s Douro Valley has consistently good climate and growing conditions almost every year. The flavors are dynamic and the tannic structure is soft and silky. This is a really good wine for all occasions, with an affordable price and value.

Unfortified flor-aged 100% Palomino by Dirk Niepoort & Equipo Navazos, sourced from the historic Macharnudo vineyard in Jerez. Fermented in old, 600-liter oak casks with indigenous yeasts and aged for 12 months under flor. Oxidative nose with hints hay and pineapple. Light, mineral, precise and bone dry on the mouth, with nice saltiness and a long, somewhat bitter finish. — 4 years ago
80% Nerello Mascalese, 20% Nerello Cappuccio. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous volcanic yeast. Aged 48 months in steel, 12 months in oak and 12 in bottle. Old vines. 750m above sea level. Sandy, mineral porous soil. Great aroma, long finish, nice funk factor. Wonderful Etna wine! Still a bit tight, will improve over the next 5+ years. — 4 years ago
Volcano Essence. Indigenous variety from Canary Islands. Fruity, Peppery and mineral. Bold and complex. Honest and intriguing . Rare and singular... Medium weight with mid to high tannins and balanced acidity. This is a serious wine for serious drinkers. This is a trip into tradition and knowledge. Masterfully crafted in Abona. — 5 years ago
Intense blend of rare varieties indigenous to Calabria (Gaglioppo, Aglianico, Magliocco Canino, Greco Nero and Nerello Capuccio) from the Odoardi vineyards on the hills of Savuto, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. Delicious, earthy, savory and smokey, nice minerality, notes of olive (the Estate is planted with olive trees and grape vines) and leather (or salami really) — 5 years ago
Wood and rose on the nose. Cinnamon and spice on the palate with a bit of tart fruit. — 5 years ago
Indigenous Nero Di Troia — 6 years ago

Sticking with the “great wines from grapes you’ve never heard of” theme for a while longer, why not join me for a sip of this alpine gem. Grown in the northerly reaches of Italy’s Valle d’Aosta, just over the border with France and Switzerland, and in some of Europe’s highest altitude vineyards (1200 meters) this wine is made from the Prié Blanc grape. Prié Blanc is the region’s only indigenous white grape, and is rarely found within the Valle d’Aosta, let alone outside of it. Vibrating with mineral intensity, the wine tastes of green apple, lemon cucumber, dried honey, and a hint of herbs. Electric acidity and a sort of peach-pit tanginess linger in the finish. Because the region is mostly tiny growers, Cave Mont Blanc is a cooperative, and a very high-quality one at that. — 3 years ago
