Now I see how this wine can be so divisive. LOTS of brett at first, more band-aid than barnyard. Takes a while to get past it and then lots of exotic spices show up. But after 40 minutes in the glass still nothing primary. It’s got the funk I can appreciate in some good left bank Bordeaux but also feels somewhat single-threaded. — 4 years ago
Bright, juicy, cloudy California Mourvèdre (100%) from the Dirty & Rowdy Family. Described as a “snapshot of California Mourvèdre”, the 2018 Familiar comes from vineyards in 5 different appellations: Antle Vineyard in Monterey county, Evangelho Vineyard in Contra Costa (120+ years old vines), Rosewood Vineyard in Mendocino (90+ years old vines), Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador county and Skinner Stoney Creek and Skinner White Oak Flats in El Dorado County. Strawberries, right amount of funk. Delicious — 5 years ago
!!!!! Texture, earth, funk, strange fruit (wild cherries?), awesome - luminous verve — 8 years ago
Barrel taste. The nose is insane, nice light funk with violets. Mouthfeel was velvety and the finish went on for a couple of mins. — 9 years ago
The Stones Speak. Did they ever! Full bodied, dense concentrates of decaying fall leaves after a fresh rain shower drenched in minerals, fine polished fully integrated tannins almost leaving a sweet edge. All secondary and tertiary notes. No distinct fruit to be recognized. It was like drinking extracts squeezed from the river rock on which they grow the Syrah. A flavor explosion as soon as it hits your mouth. — 4 years ago

Love this. Delicious dark fruits with some funk to go with them. — 5 years ago

Beautiful Syrah which in 2011 was co-fermented with 5% Viognier from the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater in Oregon. Medium ruby red with some garnet hues. Layered nose with purple flowers, light baking spices, crushed rocks, raspberries and a bit savory. Medium plus tannins (7/10) and medium plus body. Love the funk and iron on the palate followed up by some red berries, smoked earth and white pepper. Long finish. Drink till 2025.

I love Cayuse syrahs but this is a Merlot based Bordeaux style with ~ 50% Merlot and 40% cab franc which is a little like saying I feared a medium bodied wine - was I wrong - so so wrong - killer juice - it was a full bodied baby - almost like drinking chocolate covered raspberries- what a remarkable thing to say for I had to dive through the funk - tons of Aromas of earth, peat, savory herbs and dark flowers lead to soft, sweet, smoky flavors. The texture and richness keep the interest high - almost too chewy - but after a while the wine soften and the firmness was like a waterbed of joy and sin mixed together - JD gives it 95 - will drink fantastic now with a mid decant time and last 2 decades but not sure what bottle rest will do and I think Cayuse makes to drink their wines early on - big smile of approval rating — 7 years ago
Mineral, dark cherry, slightly earthy funk on the nose. Great balance with just enough tannin, refreshing enough to drink on its own but will also pair well with meat or some fish. — 9 years ago
Beautiful - everything a young Chateau Musar has - bright sweet cherry fruit with a candied note, a bit of VA that adds depth, a light touch of funk that’s barely perceptible - maybe a level below in terms of extraction and depth, but not far behind. Impressed. This would be a case buy if I drank enough to buy a case of anything — 6 years ago
Had the tempranillo a few months ago, this time it’s the grenache. It’s still wickedly young but putting out loads of cherry and watermelon juiciness and then immediately takes a turn into that rocks district funk. Always impressive how that shines through even when these wines are fresh. — 6 years ago

Very pretty notes of cherries, strawberries, & slight barnyard funk on the nose. Slightly sappy & stemmy, but very young & tight. Light bodied, red fruits, some sap & minerality with medium acid. A lovely soft and fruity finish. Silky. Needs cellar time. — 9 years ago

Very funky on the nose. It seems to open in the glass but I left it overnight and still has funk from the bottle. I wonder if it got too warm in the store. Anyway it still has a great game, herbal, floral, and bright cherry fruit. Best with food. I didn’t like as much as last year though. — 3 years ago
