Broken record, I know, but these wines are just mesmerizing and right up my alley. I’d say this is drinking close to its apex, and that the overwhelming funk you get when young has become more integrated. Olive tapenade, cherry jerky, soy, and peppercorn crusted rhubarb aromatics. Gorgeous floral lift on the palate showing whole cluster flair. Added notes of potpourri, herbs de Provence, smoked meat, mulberries and raspberries. So complex. Thanks @Keith Fisher .

Happy #winewednesday everyone! Since it’s #wawinemonth we decided to crack open this 2011 Cayuse Syrah from the Cailloux Vineyard.

2011 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard
_____
The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley, Oregon, United States of America
_____
Beautiful Syrah which in 2011 was co-fermented with 5% Viognier from the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater in Oregon. Medium ruby red with some garnet hues. Layered nose with purple flowers, light baking spices, crushed rocks, raspberries and a bit savory. Medium plus tannins (7/10) and medium plus body. Love the funk and iron on the palate followed up by some red berries, smoked earth and white pepper. Long finish. Drink till 2025.

Needs time but big potential. Compared to older version from 2006 which was superb.

Needed plenty of time in the decanter. Savory roasted meat juices, a mild barnyard funkiness, sage, thyme, and mixed olives. Some juicy black cherry pushing against the meaty, rich flavors. Awesome acidity and balance. This is the way to do Washington Syrah.

After 1-2 hours in a decanter. Licorice, light asphalt, and dried herbs. Paired well with quail in black pepper sauce at a dinner celebrating the second annual Raymond Lecture.
