Taylor Fladgate

20 Years Old Tawny Port Blend

20-year tawny a personal favorite. I’m always amazed how good this is whenever I have a glass. Taylor run today from Oporto by descendants of the Yeatman & Fladgate families, both of which have been partners in the firm since 1830s. Complex aromas rich with dried fruits & nutty spice. On the palate apricot and sweet berry flavors with honey and toasted nut notes, well balanced nice acidity. Lingering finish ending smooth with oaky nutty character. Very Nice. Price keeps going up each year. Tasting Sample. — 5 years ago

Screaming Eagle

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

My very “first flight” with the ultimate Napa cult. Not what I expected - leaner and more crystalline in its purity and allure. Pepper, violet pastille, rosemary. So polished and impeccably crafted. — 6 years ago

Mollydooker Wines

Velvet Glove McLaren Vale Shiraz 2014

Greg Ballington
9.6

Firstly we wanted to thank @Martin G Rivard for sharing this bottle with us. Stunning wine and such a treat. Really enjoyed these two beauties from Mollydooker Wines!

Tasted blind, theme was either Napa Cult Wines or High End Australian, not told directly to keep us on our toes.

Darkest of the lot so far, with a deep purplish red. Rich nose of caramel, black fruits, sweet spices and a touch of heat too. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Rich, extracted and powerful on the palate. Layers of perfumed purple flowers, a bit creamy, tons of sweet spices, and dark fruits. Well balanced acidity. Insanely long finish. Drink till 2033.

The third wine, and without a doubt an insanely young Australian Shiraz. Needed the extra day for the heat to dissipate. This was decanted for three hours on day one, could have used more time.

Dalla Valle Vineyards

Maya 1992

We found this bottle in my father in laws cellar and frankly didn’t know what it was at first. Apparently this was one of the original Cali cult wines...which had me pretty skeptical, though at “only” 13.5% alcohol I was left with some hope that it would not be an overripe jam bomb disaster. My ending verdict is that it’s actually quite nice, especially with some air. Lots of berry fruit, in a way that is certainly a bit over extracted. But this has mouth watering acidity - even after nearly 30 years - that really keeps this together, along with some nice lifting menthol at the end. Nice. — 5 years ago

Nickel & Nickel

Stiling Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

Nickel & Nickel exclusively to produces 100% varietal, single-vineyard wines that express the distinctive personality of each vineyard. Established in 1997 by the partners of Far Niente. Aromas of stone fruit and citrus. On the palate apple, melon and pear flavors, with some lemon zest, vanilla and toasty notes. Nice balance with acidity on lingering finish on a gently spicy rich oaky mineral ending. Classic CA Chard, very nice! — 6 years ago

Scarecrow

Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Everything a cult Cabernet should be. Very high quality yet integrated new oak, ultra-ripe and silky tannin, mouth-coating and voluptuous fruit, layered, and very lengthy. Seamless from attack to finish. The richness evident on front, mid, and back palate. showing some muscles under its fine velvet profile, very gorgeous. Aromatically not the most compelling with its high alcohol and elevated VA, all palate here though. However beneath the noise is some beautiful oak, exotic spices, and floral notes, still very complex just lacking a touch of detail. ‘Murica — 5 years ago

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2001

Oh my! Love this wine. Super ripe style that is so hedonistic in its Nose, color, sweet dark cherry fruit. Never thought a Sangiovese could be a clone for a Napa cult but here we are/were with the 2001! New world vs Old world going on with this one and New world wins big time with this one! — 6 years ago

4G Wines

Echo Of G Red Blend 2011

Absolutely lovely second wine from 4G of South Africa. The fact that this is a second wine is a bit of a joke given just how good this is. Reminds me of a wine from a great Napa cult producer. Great freshness, tannic / acidic structure, purity of fruit without the teeming depth of its bigger, bolder brother. — 7 years ago

@Greg Ballington more, unfortunately. $375 for current release. Without any insight into their P&L, $250-300 would be more palatable and make more sense for an unestablished brand IMO. Even the Napa cults started at a more accessible price point I believe.
