Caymus Vineyards

40th Anniversary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Ron R
9.1

We really wanted to love this, but alas, we think that around 2012 was when Caymus decided to focus on an à la carte presentation, which makes for quite a shallow encounter.
They have tapped into the logic of the Skinner box operant conditioning. We humanoids press a lever (in this case pull a cork), and a one-night-stand promptly arrives in our glass. Us peeps tend to follow the crowd (I present myself as exhibit A), but when you taste this, it makes a splash, but flatters to deceive.

I had 6 bottles of the 40th and not one over the years impressed me. I only buy older vintages of Caymus at this point.

@Ron R I agree this vintage tastes like a milkshake to me.

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

This was the last bottle from a case I bought in about 1997. Over the 29 years since the wine was made, the noteworthy tar and tobacco notes that Pontet Canet is known for softened to an ashy-ness that is a softer version of a Mouton Rothschild. Still plenty of life left in this outstanding vintage, but the wine won't improve much (if at all) from this point. I enjoyed this bottle with Lucas Comfort, a day after his 29th birthday (1990). — 6 years ago

Château Poujeaux

Moulis en Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

Third bottle from a case picked up cheap because critics didn’t love it. Consistent notes though perhaps this is the best bottle yet. Medium body and depth overall but still cassis with a subtle candied note is strong on the nose, with elements of tobacco leaf and leather. Fine tannins still abundant and acidity firm. This will age for another 10-15 years but this is perhaps not structured to be a 40 year wine. — 7 years ago

Les Picasses Chinon Cabernet Franc 2011

Is there a better wine for roast chicken than Loire cabernet franc? Rhetorical question, of course. 2011 so tight, even after two hour decant. It slowly unveils its charms, like Jo Fiennes unwinds Gwen Paltrow in the otherwise forgettable "Shakespeare in Love". Unlike that film, this has staying power. Stash away a case, it will develop beautifully over the next three decades. — 8 years ago

Vini Conestabile della Staffa

Cantina Conestabile Magione Case Parse Umbria Rosso 2018

Pale garnet. Grapefruit, red cherry, and unripe plums on the nose. Medium acidity with light body, and light tannins. Red jolly ranchers, with red cherry, pink grapefruit and a little herbaceous on the palate. There's also a hint of bitters at the end of a medium finish. Really nice, more character than the other red cuvée that comes in the litre format, but still highly drinkable. Best chilled — 4 years ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2013

Three years since the last bottle from this case. Very little flowers or fruit on the nose today, mostly cedar and cigar box and spice. Good structure, lots of tar and earth, sour cherry. Hint of mint on the end. Anything from the P del B is always great. — 5 years ago

Domaine de la Voûte des Crozes Côte-de-Brouilly Gamay 2013

“Has both elevation & density” says my friend. Aged Brouilly after I saved just one out of a case. I thought a bit awkward & it’s lost it’s plum deeper notes, but my buddy thought otherwise. Still, wished I had saved a few more for comparison. Kermit importer — 6 years ago

Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera

Pegasos Toscana Rosso Sangiovese 2005

2005
Not so clear in terms of composition, blind tasting says it is not typical Sangiovese.
Example of organic wine before it became a mainstream. Very good balance of berries and seems like it was aging in oak 3 years. “I make Sangiovese, the rest are making coke” popular saying of the wine maker 😊

Cypher Winery

The Peasant Paso Robles Grenache Blend 2012

$40.00 at the winery, picked up case for $12.00 a bottle on Last Bottle last week. Can't compare it to a GSM from Booker or Saxum, but at that price I really didn't expect it to.
Pleasantly surprised by this one

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Baron de Pichon-Longueville Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

This Pichon-Baron was in the earliest peak of its window, pure ✏️ and graphite cigar box nose, rich, intense, leading cassis, tar and a mineral and wonderfully tannic trip over the palate and a long, 40 second finish that was reminiscent dry red clay. Good news: I have 11 more in the case I cracked last night. Bad news: I’ll be in my 60’s before these open up and the secondary stuff really starts to show. — 5 years ago

Staglin Family Vineyard

Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Last and best bottle of the 12-case. Aromatically insane - licorice, roses, Rutherford dust - ahead of a fully resolved, velvety palate of saddle leather, dark chocolate, dark red and purple fruit and completely melted tannins. 60 second tail (or more). As previously noted, more than acceptable bottle variation in the case, but this gem was worth it all... — 5 years ago

Drinks well above the $55 price point.

Orin Swift Cellars

Machete Petite Sirah Blend

Once again Orin Swift in Napa Valley does it again. Every bottle of his Machete has a different image on the bottle - 12 in all- I really like this one. This is his Machete 2015 , yes 2015!, California Red blend of Petite Sirah. Syrah, and Grenache aged in French oak for 10 months. The color is opaque black and the legs are slow. The bouquet is blueberry pie and strawberries. The initial palate is blackberry, boysenberry, vanilla, and pepper. All my favorites!!!! Yes that is a lot of fruit, but its not sweet. There is also this oaky earthy characteristic to it. No smoke or cigar or pipe tobacco. This is as good as any 100 dollar bottle of wine!!!!!!!! The finish is short and has no lingering sourness nor bitterness. It is perfection in a glass. This is a date wine if your date likes the big bold reds. Fantastic job Mr Swift! I wish I could afford a case! — 8 years ago
