Anecdote Lieu Dit Les "Varosses" Champagne Chardonnay

A clear shimmering gold color in glass with vivacious tiny bubbles that go on and on. Very pretty and stately in appearance. An absolute burst of orchard fruits on the nose with pears and peaches. A touch of grapefruit with a dab of honey. These floral notes are a bit enchanting and delicate. Hazelnuts and green apples abound the longer it grows in the glass.

When I think of Cédric Moussé, I automatically think of Meunier, as he is one of the Masters of Meunier. This Blanc de Blancs comes from plots in Cuisles and Jonquery originally planted with Pinot Meunier. Disgorged in 2019 with an Extra Brut of 2 g/l, this thing sings and is so delicious. The acidity is zesty and the structure is well balanced. Full of life and power.

The palate is charming from first sip to the last. Mirroring the nose, those pears and peaches tantalize while yeast makes you smile. Very mineral driven and plenty of chalky goodness. Apples become dominant as times goes on. The finish has nice length with some unexpected white pepper. A unique entry in the Moussé portfolio and it most definitely belongs.

Les Vignes de Mon Village Blanc de Meuniers Champagne Pinot Meunier

A shimmering pale bronze color in the glass. Fast paced perlage with quickly dissipating bubbles. A fully mature, complex nose with orchard fruits and orange marmalade wafting from the glass. Lifted aromatics of apples
of all sorts along with sweet butter and the faintest touch of cinnamon. So interesting and it just keeps impressing as time goes by. Shaved almonds and hot bread with a bit of jasmine.

I love everything Cédric Moussé puts out. One of the true Masters of Meunier in champagne. The terroir of Cuisles speaks so clearly here. Pure Pinot Meunier, disgorged in January of 2018 with no dosage. Racy, yet slightly restrained acidity and exquisite balance. As time goes on and this grows in the glass, that lack of dosage is so very appreciated and resplendent. Everything in tune here.

Nice minerality and overall vitality here. The palate follows the nose closely with more butter and cinnamon and mint. Crisp citrus fruit notes and fantastic subdued strawberry. Wet chalk, moist stones, and delicious red cherries. Medium long finish that really makes you regret you don’t have more. An outstanding effort from one of my favorite producers that brings the excellence every single time.

Roses de Jeanne Brut Blanc de Noirs

Third rating for this: started at 10 degrees , and warmed up to around 15-18 in a warm 29 degrees tropical Singapore. Was fresh, crisp, lemon-like at first, followed by zesty mandarin orange flavours that finally matured to mellow honey apricots. Best of all coloured like the upcoming Chinese New Year - perfect gold. — 3 years ago

Grains de Celles Pinot Noir Rosé Champagne Blend

Just take a look at this color. So striking. So sexy. Nice perlage and cream. The nose is so crisp and fresh. Pears and lively red cherries alongside mangoes. Freshly baked bread aromas are very nice here, as well are the grapefruit and strawberry.

Yet another young hotshot champagne maker, Aurelien Gerbais from the Aube. A friend and neighbor of Cédric Bouchard and that’s all you need to know. 50/25/25 PN/CH/Pinot Blanc with an extra brut dosage of 3 g/l. The low dosage avoids the trap of being austere, but rather it’s an inviting and gracious Rosé. The addition of 10% Coteaux Champenois Pinot Noir gives it that beautifully sexy color and viscosity.

Dry with breathtaking acidity, the terroir really speaks here. The palate follows the nose with more summer berries and light yeast. So lovely, so sleek. Good sex in a bottle. If you see these, get them.

Cave des Cailles Petite Arvine 2018

Has a harder edge than some of the other petite arvines I have been trying. More minerality, and more oak. But no prominent vanilla and less rounded mouthfeel but still dense. I like it, seems more serious. — 3 years ago

Though not the same as it was pre-COVID -19, a handful of us were able to gather (while keeping our distance) to celebrate being back together and opened some fun wines to share. Wine is always better with good company.

One of two champagnes for the evening (the other being a Cédric Bouchard Val Villane, which I posted about a few weeks ago). A producer I’m semi familiar with. Rich and dense aromatics in that oxidative style, but it’s more fruit driven than I expected. Some yeast, good bit of chalk and limestone. Bruised pear, caramel dipped golden delicious apple and apple strudel too. Acidity was mellow and it toed the line of champagne and still wine. A champagne I’d like to try again. Thanks

Special Club Rosé de Saignee Champagne Pinot Meunier 2015

First things first, what an absolutely brilliant color. A striking deep red with enough fine, aggressive bubbles to keep you smiling. This really is one of those wines that just jump out of the glass at you. Blood orange and bold strawberry aromas right out of the gate. Cherries on the tart side are prominent with a touch of dried earth. Vanilla and herbs with more juicy red fruit as time goes by. This is simply outstanding.

If you’re familiar with Cédric Moussé, then you’re familiar with his stable of truly excellent grower champagnes. Always lower dosage, always terroir driven. He’s one of the masters of Meunier and shows it here. 100% Pinot Meunier from a single plot in Cuisles and aged three years on lees. Sharp, beautiful acidity due to the Extra Brut dosage. Nice weight and sophistication here as is the norm with his wines. Rosé the Saignée way so it has that boldness and purity of fruit.

So vinous and energetic, this is as classy and refined as you want but also just plain fun to drink. As time goes by, the balance sits perfectly as does the structure. That luscious red fruit is pure joy in the mouth, along with some nice citrus. Earthy funk and herb goodness. Terrific length, purity, and tension. The perfect way to start off a new year.

'Special Club' Les Fortes de Terres Brut 2015

Well they’ve done it again. Who is they? Why Cédric Moussé and the Club Trésors de Champagne of course. Another superstar bottle from them.

A muted pale lemon color with an effusive stream of tiny bubbles. Aromas of honeyed almonds, peaches, and crushed herbs. Fresh cherries and apricots sparkle here. Toasty brioche bread and chalky minerality show after some time with green apples being quite dominant after receiving some air.

The Master of Meunier and here it shows. 100% Pinot Meunier from the village of Cuisles located in the Vallee de la Marne. This Special Club offering is from one plot of land, giving it its name, Les Fortes Terres. Disgorged on 10/21/19 with a dosage of 1 g/l, this is refreshingly stark with beautifully racy acidity.

Full bodied and bold on palate, the complexity and purity of the Meunier shines through. Butterscotch and apples start the party off with more cherries and citrus playing along. A nice long, dry finish. Vibrant and captivating. Moussé and Special Club champagnes never disappoint.
