Graphite and raisin, fig and marinated porcini, smoky dried cherries, black pepper on grilled beef fat, toasted sesame, dried black and red currants, all within an aura of damson and violet and honeyed rose petal. Palate leaps with damson and dried and fresh bing cherry, dried spiced plum, cedar and dried lavender, black olive, moist tobacco, and perfectly toned tannins which come off as a separate, undefinable taste of fruit skin extraction with stunning depth; tea leaves meet dried blackberry in a redwood stand. Soft date and creamy fig follow to a tart raspberry end.

Dusty cherry and dense Christmas pudding nose features baked blueberry and dried red currants with blue spruce, Connecticut cigar wrap, sunflower, marigold and tea. There is ample black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg and lacquered oak. Silky smooth and incredibly well-integrated layers of aforementioned spices with a surprisingly green tobacco note. Cedar and dried blackberry atop baked raspberry and peppercorn tart. Simply delicious and unwaveringly structured.

Meaty, bacon like nose, touches of toffee and blackberry jam. It's quite an obvious nose, lacking complexity in regard to the terroir of Cheval. 89 is one of my favorite vintages and I was expecting a bit more power, muscle, mouth coating and intensity. Mouthfeel is quite simple, linear and not of Cheval's level. A very charming wine indeed that misses the wow factor you expect for such origin. #bordeaux #bordeauxwines #chevalblanc — 8 years ago
One of the most prized Right Bank Bordeaux from the legendary Cheval Blanc, these were in great shape and strutting their stuff, both plenty open but indicating to me decades of life ahead of them.
The 2000 was especially complex, showing more range in complexity with a little more length and density. The 2005 was concentrated and pure, brimming with black and red fruit, licorice and a trace of rock and mineral buried under the fat of a generous weather vintage.
