Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend 2013

Decanted for around an hour, the recently released 2013 Grand Vin from Chateau Musar is an enormous wine at present in its youth. Gradually, it opened into a gorgeous, exotic and utterly unique product of this unlikely corner of the wine world. There’s plenty of Bordeaux-like character in the form of dark fruit and cigar box, but there are notes too of cranberry, liquorice, clove, mandarin and five spice. The mouthfeel, as a whole, has a quasi Brunello quality to it, with its bright cherry fruit and mouthwatering acidity. But woe is anyone to compare this wine to any other, for it is incomparable. One of Serge Hochar’s last vintages before his passing in 2014, and one that will doubtless have a long life. — 5 years ago

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2004

We had the 2004, 2008, 2010 today. All good vintages. 2004 was the consensus WOTN being the most “put together”. The balance between fruit, acidity, structure was all there. — 9 years ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1961

Mid-shoulder fill. There was a slight indication of oxidation on the nose with some interesting cheesy smell. However on the palate this wine was so complex expressing all sorts of things ranging from sour cherry, mushroom, earthiness, strawberry (!), fresh vegetation or herbaceous note (in a good way). — 9 years ago

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1982

There are no good old wines only good old bottles. Good Pauillac cedar, typicity, long finish and lots of evolution and the Glass. Great freshness for wine of this age — 9 years ago

Louis Roederer

Cristal Brut Champagne 1993

A surprising number of bubbles for the age yet the age showing itself and not a lot of life left. There was concern about storage based on the shape of the bottle. — 10 years ago

Outstanding! There is the perfect moment for a bottle to be opened and tonight was it. It was the wine equivalent of a album that you can listen to from start to finish. — 10 years ago

A bit of oxidation, but otherwise, just fine. Fruit still there. 1970, 45 year old wine for our 45th Anniversary. — 11 years ago

Special Selection Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Loads of fruit. A note of dried apple skin. Close to perfection but there is still plenty of time left in this bottle. — 12 years ago

Krug

Brut Champagne Blend 2006

Beautiful vintage Krug, but clearly still very young (which is slightly nuts). Bubbles are quite fine but still very present. Yeasty and mouth filling - there is real power here. Deep and intense on the palate, long finish, great acid. Very fun to try - but would love to try in 5-10 years. — 5 years ago

Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1970

Lower neck/high shoulder fill. Cork intact but crumbled as it was pulled out. The appearance was excellent – fresh, dark, deep, no sign of letting go at all. On the bouquet, there was a strong Cabernet perfume. Cassis, black fruits. The tannic structure was still very healthy. No trace of oxidation whatsoever. This Montrose lived up to its name as a long distance runner! — 9 years ago

Classy, elegant, terroir driven claret. We paired this with our first Donabe, and it worked... But I can't help thinking that it would have been better with a grilled ribeye. This is still young but the finish is already there- super long and mineral! — 10 years ago

1990: Corked, unfortunately. My mom had the best line, "It sure tastes better than it smells!" I recall what it was like on release, hard candy sweetness with a surprisingly light framework, particularly compared to both the '88 & '89 on release, and the crazy depth of the'90 Ch. Filholt Creme de tete, which was massively concentrated. This bottle still had oomph, yet wasn't all there. — 11 years ago

Dominus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1987

Home alone for 24 hrs! The perfect time to open something older. Fully mature Bordeaux... I mean Napa! Dried fruit and tobacco, there is still a frame of tannins but they are well integrated and slightly chalky in texture. Enjoyable but more mature than I prefer. — 6 years ago

Heitz Cellar

Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

From a magnum...for a '90 there seems to be no color progression on it at all, even at the edges. There is a minty, herbaceous note to it but it has great blackberry flavors and nice firm tannins on the finish. Really incredible how well this is holding up and an outstanding expression of Napa Valley Cab! — 9 years ago

Deep dark black 🍒 in color with no bricking. Potent nose dark fruit, earth, leather and mushroom. Dense fruit flavors with hint of olive. Smooth tannins. Elegant, persistence on the finish. Very fresh and vibrant. In a great drinking window. Makes the price of perfect storage worthwhile. @Andrew Schirmer there is more for you! — 10 years ago

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2002

Scorewine
9.0

A fantastic 2002, this lovely wine shows once more that today there aren't really bad years in Bordeaux, this Pontet Canet was well structured rich and tempting. Deep red, tempting rich multi layered nose ripe cherries, black current, coffee, cigar box, and tea leaves, full rich body, dry tannins, full of black fruit, high acidity and a long chewy finish. Was worth the wait, my score 90. Drink to 2022 — 10 years ago

Smoky, Smoky and Smoky chardonnay. Pronounced oak on the nose and on the palate. I might need some time on the bottle do develop flavours. I would say this is an educational wine. If you struggle to understand what is oak in wine, this is a wine for you. There is good acidity, tropical fruit notes, but the oak is intense for me. — 10 years ago
