Rich earthy blackberry and cocoa. Dark and big, almost more like a Cabernet Sauvignon. — 3 years ago

Retail notes,
There’s a sweet-spot for domestic Sauvignon Blanc found in a special part of Bennett Valley that experiences a strong maritime influence as it flows through the Petaluma Gap to Sonoma Mountain. Within that funnel of cooling coastal air, the Dry Stack Vineyard is in a prime location at 550 feet elevation at the base of Mt. Taylor. I’m continually drawn to Sauvignon Blanc from Dry Stack and the vineyard produces fruit with detailed notes of fresh guava, rocky minerals, ripe tangerine and mineral infused citrus. You might be familiar with Russell Bevan’s version from Dry Stack, and Grey Stack has been a pillar on our tasting list in Yountville.
With Grey Stack, everything begins in the Vineyard with exceptional quality fruit, but from there, the wine is given a voice by winemaker Patrick Sullivan, whose experience includes making wine at Peter Michael, Paul Hobbs, Lewis Cellars and Rudd. This is absolutely one of the finest examples of California Sauvignon Blanc with its superior focus and incredibly vivid, distinctive flavors. If you love Sauvignon Blanc, or better yet, even if you don’t… Try this one and you’ll probably never look back. — 5 years ago

— 3 years ago
Been waiting for years to get back to London and bring this home as it’s only available at Berry Bros. & Rudd as far as I know. Remarkable mineral and acidic cut for a southern French white, like a Loire chenin but with a bit more heft and roundness. Green mango, bitter grapefruit, honey, pear, smoke and spice on the finish. Worth checking a bag for! — 4 years ago

Mineral, lemon zest, and oak. This is the Platonic Sauvignon Blanc blend. It’s lush and rich but crisp. Excellent. — 5 years ago
Rudd Estates Crossroads Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, Napa Valley, California
Here is my #FridayCabernetfix for this week.
Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim.
Fruity nose of blackberries, blueberries, black cherries, dried figs, raisins, black pepper, chocolates, cedar, vanilla, tobacco, light alcohol, licorice and spices. Exactly what you would expect from a good quality Napa Cabernet.
Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.
Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, cooked plums, raisins, dried fruits, tobacco, spices, chocolates, cola, cedar, vanilla, espresso, graphite and peppercorn.
Long finish with round tannins and spices.
This is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Nicely balanced and fruit forward, with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.
Very enjoyable to drink by itself. Still young, but already very tasty. Has great potential to reach 95+ points in 5 to 10 years.
Good by itself or with food. I gave it 90 minutes to open up in a decanter.
I paired it with cheeses, but so yummy and delicious all by itself.
Aged in (46% new) French Oak barrels.
15.1% alcohol by volume.
93 points.

I remember tasting this wine around 20 years ago & I remember exactly what it tasted like. One of the best wines from Napa for the 98 vintage. Rice a Roni should give David Ramey the Jericho Canyon fruit back to make Cabernet. These Rudd & the Ramey Jerichos are top notch. I just read Pepsi now owns Rice a Roni. — 5 years ago
Fruit forward with peach, apricot and balanced out by the oak. Mt Veeder fruit! — 6 years ago
A friend had a “reduction party” as he was needing to thin out his cellar. Definitely a party I’m happy to attend!
One of the better Napa SBs I’ve had. Love those mountain SBs because of the profile and power they exude. Aromatically it showed ripe grapefruit, sea salt, fresh squeezed lime over rocks, and wild flowers...even some mint. While a more round profile, it’s still a bit jagged at this age with acidity. Added notes of melon, pink sea salt and tart lemon lime. Definitely tropical, but not as much as Aesthete’s SB. This will age nicely. — 6 years ago
