Wow - best mencia I’ve ever had. Palacios is an extremely talented winemaker who is well-known for fine Riojas. But he also owns vineyards in Bierzo growing old vine mencia. This wine is fabulous - medium-bodied, fresh, and lively with gorgeous red fruit, garrigue, and herbs. The fine-grained tannins and bright acidity make this wine a joy to drink. I’ve had many of Raul Perez’s mencias - they are very good; this is better. 2017 vintage on April 21, 2020 — 6 years ago
Cibo Grille, Ft Myers, with Lee and Raul. Similar to a Pinot Noir. Acidic, complex, lighter. Would order again. — 7 years ago
Served to a group that wanted not too heavy and coming from a cab and a chateaux neuf du Pape. (Forgive spelling) — 8 years ago
Acid and high dose n tannins freshly opened. After breathing it turned around to be a magnificent Grenache!! Had it with steak. Very good combo — 9 years ago
A delicious Mencia, and tremendous value from Raul Perez. — 10 years ago

A project of Raul Perez. Old vines Mencía and 3 other indigenous varieties. Violets and cherry on the nose. Palate dominated by typical iron/blood flavor of Mencía with red fruit. Stony backbone with softer tannins. Long finish. Young but outstanding potential. This guy is a serious vintner. — 6 years ago
Interesting wine. Kept changing and evolving in a good way. Started things off with a bit of menthol followed by blueberries, blackberries, currant and violets. Prieto Picudo’s the grape from Leon, Spain. Seek it and know it., if you can find it. You’ll be rewarded plenty by the masterful hand of Raul Perez. — 7 years ago
Raul and I enjoyed a lot — 8 years ago
From the days where Raul Perez still made a 100% pinot noir. In the more recent years of this wine he always uses Mencia in a blend with Pinot. Only 526 bottles made and one of the very few Pinot Noirs from Spain. This is nice but is slightly sharper + has more acidity then Burgundy pinots. Nevertheless a great discovery. — 8 years ago
2011 out of magnum. Very fresh with a long life ahead of it. A shame to drink it now. Ok...not really. Drink it anytime you can. — 10 years ago
Me encanta este vino, sincero, puro mencía y a buen precio. Bodega de Raúl Pérez, no hay más que decir. — 11 years ago

Before we get into the notes on this wine, let’s get something out of the way first: the labeling on the Ultreia branded wines by Raul Pérez is downright confusing. The entry-level is designated “Saint Jacques” (which is a fabulous wine and incredible QPR)…and then comes this plain label “Ultreia” before you step up to the other designations of “Valtuille”, “La Claudina”, etc which are higher-end??. It’s really tough to understand the hierarchy. The good news? It really doesn’t matter when all the wines are really quite stunning. And this bottle is absolutely representative of Señior Pérez's impeccable style.
Popped and poured; consumed over three days. Best on Day 2. On the nose, blue berries, dark cherries, brambles, exotic spices…giving way to spiced lamb after a lot of air, roses, incense, and underbrush. On the palate, red fruit which transitions to more of a darker fruit profile after Day 2, with some mushrooms, deli meat and minerals. Really sound structure. Medium-plus acid, medium plus tannin. The finish is long and satisfying; tongue smacking. Even at $35, this is a killer deal. What a wine. — 5 years ago
@Delectable Wine this is the Rapolao cuvée. Have we been calling Perez a rock star for too many years now? Let’s just settle on “master”. This wine is refined, aromatic, balanced, and beautiful. And the other “crus” are even better. Forward! — 5 years ago
If you want to test you tolerance for strange wines or you are a wine geek 🤓 this is it. Very much like an oxidized Jura wine made from the savagnin grape but this is Albarin not Albariño! Tastes like a sherry at first. Super nutty and corky but not corked! Kind of like grape cider. Bracing acidity. Drink this by itself and muse over the flavor for hours. Or pair it with stinky cheeses Goat, aged Taleggio a blue cheese etc. . This is not a wine for a dinner party with friends. I actually think cheese screws up our palate but this wine can take it! Bottle 447 of 670 made. An experience but only for the brave. Only available from Max Kogod in the US. — 7 years ago

Superb blend, and a gorgeous bottle !! Enjoyed w/ Raul y Charo en Barcelona !! — 10 years ago
Outstanding, one of the best whites I've ever had. It is so enchanting and perfect. It is golden, more like a fortified wine, yet it has fruit, balance, acidity. — 11 years ago
Raul Perez is a superb winemaker..!! — 12 years ago

Our local purveyor being out of Raul Perez’s Atalier bottling we needed a substitute and fast. This is a fabulous wine. Extensive time on lees, bottle aging. Initial funk on opening, decanted an hour. Huge acid, great salinity and creaminess take this to the next level. Aromatics on point. Great work. — 5 years ago
