Gorgeous, Meursault-like Bourgogne Chardonnay with sweet lime zest and flesh, a touch of butter and beautifully judged framing oak. With air the nose turns increasingly airy and mineral, with excellent clarity and purity. The palate is rich, ripe and unctuous, with an almost icing-on-cake texture, terrific density and chew, but enough freshness and salinity to keep everything lifted. Very sappy, very well constructed, with a long, mouthwatering mineral finish. 9.4 upside — 3 days ago

Nose starts off with a bit of VA, dried leaves and some gorgeously pure cherry fruit that needs some air to reveal itself more. Great stoney minerality as well with some major florals. Gorgeous. Haunting. Palate is very 21 and a bit backwards out of the gates but the freshness, purity of the fruit and length indicate this will open up into something stunning. 9.4 now. Really fleshed out with air and has that nimble, impossible elegant 21 character with just perfect but restrained early season cherry fruit. Outstanding length and texture. 9.4 to .9.5 with an hour of air. — 2 years ago

In 1953, Jean Baumard acquired vineyard in Quarts de Chaume, in 1968, purchased substantial acreage in Savennieres. Today Jean’s son, Florent, manages the winery. Aromas of green fruits, floral and flinty notes. On the palate green apple, pear, melon and slight nutty flavors, well balanced with acidity. Medium+ length ending, no fluttering with fresh juicy mineral, just like the butterfly on the label! Will age well if you can resist opening. — 7 years ago

Earthy, deep cherry fruits on the nose and just a wallop or sweet, wet Volnay earth. Palate is so seductive and gorgeous. It has that 22 opulence but also the Garaudet earthy grit. Unreal, sweet and velvety tannins. Really brilliant. Let’s see what air does. I can only assume it will finesse out like in barrel. Wow did this need air! Stunning aromas that are classic Volnay. Haunting with such lift. Stunning fruit on the palate and a deep, but grapey young quality. 9.5 to 9.6. — 6 months ago

This is so good. Cooking now but more notes soon. It’s got this uncanny elegance on the palate plus this unreal concentration of sweet oak, minerals and fleshy fruit but backed up by ripping acids. Buttery Meursault but elevated beyond. — 8 months ago
