Chalk Hill

Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2016

Went to a tasting and they were featuring Chalk Hill, winery now owned by Bill Foley, of Foley Family Wines, who continues the traditions that Fred Furth, who founded CH in 1972. Had this ‘16 about a year ago. Rich deep straw color with aromas of stone and tropical fruits and citrus notes. On the palate ripe apple, sweet melon and lemon flavors with gentle vanilla toasty oak. Well balanced on lingering finish ending with oak and mineral notes. Aged well. Tasting Sample. — 8 years ago

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Had another bottle, aged well. A neighbor of Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion, Les Carmes is positioned on the same bank. The name derives from the friars, known as ";Les Carmes"; who owned the property between the 16th & 18th century. This estate has been under new ownership since 2010. Predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged for 18 months in French oak, (33% new). Red fruit and currants on the nose. Raspberry and plum flavors fine tannins and lingering finish ending with mineral tones. Nice! — 9 years ago

Marie et Frederic Chauffray

La Reserve d'O Terrasses Du Larzac Syrah Grenache 2013

In 2005 Marie and Frédéric Chauffray came across the perfect plot of land—25 acres on the plateau of Arboras in Terrasses du Larzac, situated in the Langeudoc. They sold the prestigious wine shop they owned outside Paris and embarked upon the dream of making wine, together founding Domaine de La Réserve d'O. Berry fruit and cacao notes. Cherry and mocha with spice and fine tannins. Lingering finish with ending with mineral notes. — 9 years ago

A wonderful tasting put on by Classic Wine Storage featuring Long Shadows Winery. If you aren’t familiar with these wines, they are phenomenal WA state wines that are made by the likes of Randy Dunn, Phillipe Melka, Michel Rolland, John DuVall, and more.

This wine is made by Michel Rolland. Large and in charge merlot. Mocha, sweet pipe tobacco, and a lot of ripe blackberry. Nutmeg and cinnamon. Cab lovers merlot.

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2009

Tasted blind. Would not have tipped this to be a GC. Finish appeared way to short. A mark of infanticide perhaps? Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed this wine. Gorgeous, far too pretty and effortless to be from Gevrey - probably the winemaker's intepretation of the terrior (higher climat?). Floral, super primary still, mineral tones. As the night progressed, the wine seemed to shut down. Oh well. I imagine this would be an astounding wine with time.

Note: CJ noted that this isn't a vineyard owned by the ladies. Fruit was shared with another producer.

Here is a good, historical overview of Ruchottes-Chambertin and Thomas-Bassot holding, which was divided between Rousseau, M-G, & Bonnefond(Roumier). There are trees behind the top of the vineyard, du Dessus, where Clos des Ruchottes is located. The Clos receives shade from trees later in afternoon, and, thus, is arguably a cooler terroir than the lower part of vineyard, du Bas. This supports Rousseau’s Clos des Ruchottes arguably being the most elegant wine in all of Gevrey-Chambertin as the Clos receives less sun, cools down in the late afternoon shade, and has shallower soil than du Dessus. The M-G and Roumier bottlings are arguably richer, fuller wines as the vines receive sun longer in the afternoon and the soils are possibly a little deeper lower down in the du Bas portion of vineyard where there plots are located.

@Web Bond Great info. Thanks for sharing 😁 Would love to taste all three producers side by side. I mean their wines are typically all marked by elegance, so it'll be great to see how these producers interpretation of elegance stack up within the constraints that you've shared 😉

Joseph Phelps Vineyards

9.2

This historic gracefully aged Cabernet Sauvignon although near the end of its prime still presents its beautiful complex and balanced character. Perfect Color, intriguing bouquet, savouring taste leaving a smooth lingering balance in your mouth. You will taste chocolate, berries and a wisp of oak that was well worth the 31 year wait. Although this vineyard is no longer owned by Joseph Phelps it remains a JPV classic. — 10 years ago

Madonna Nera

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2014

Benedetta knows how to make a great wine. This comes from a tiny family owned estate on the east side of the hill in Montalcino. Benedetta's father worked these vines for years before he saved up to buy them. They only make 13,000 bottles / year I believe. Think of their Super Tuscan starter /first course wine, the Rossi as the brother, and their Brunello as the "dad". Buy this bottle. — 9 years ago
