Château Yvonne

Saumur Chenin Blanc 2018

Chateau Yvonne Blanc 2018: Despite being youthful with a very bright future ahead is so moreish and delicious in its infant stage. Serve 10-12 degrees in your large burgundy glasses and even better after some time in the decanter. And most importantly, make sure to get som while its still available.

Dense concentration on the nose with grilled lemon, ripe peaches and nectarines, honey, blossom a very integrated oak profile and a chalky minerality.
A piercing and electric acidity dominates the palate and cuts through and brings balance to the a full body with a waxy and creamy viscosity. Pronounced flavour intensity with full presence through the complex mid plate. There is definitely a long and very serious finish but falls short from being a hall of famer.

A very smart craftmanship from the artisanal organic and biodynamic Chateau Yvonne, the Saumur Blanc went through malolactic fermenation and spent 12 months in oak (20%) new

Les Preuses Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2013

Racy and energetic and just electric on the palate after an irresistible nose. With terrific evolvement over two hours, fresh peaches, citrus, oyster shell and crushed rocks and minerals. The finish is long and lingering with plenty of power. — 7 years ago

La Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle

Valée d'Aosta Prié Blanc 2013

Alder Yarrow
9.2

Sticking with the “great wines from grapes you’ve never heard of” theme for a while longer, why not join me for a sip of this alpine gem. Grown in the northerly reaches of Italy’s Valle d’Aosta, just over the border with France and Switzerland, and in some of Europe’s highest altitude vineyards (1200 meters) this wine is made from the Prié Blanc grape. Prié Blanc is the region’s only indigenous white grape, and is rarely found within the Valle d’Aosta, let alone outside of it. Vibrating with mineral intensity, the wine tastes of green apple, lemon cucumber, dried honey, and a hint of herbs. Electric acidity and a sort of peach-pit tanginess linger in the finish. Because the region is mostly tiny growers, Cave Mont Blanc is a cooperative, and a very high-quality one at that. — 5 years ago

Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2015

Another lovely btl. On the nose: noble struck match reduction, lemon, banana, a touch of vanilla. On the palate, fantastic acidity, lemon peel, loads of wet stone minerality, excellent density, and an electric finish. This is drinking so well now. — 6 years ago

Trout Gulch Vineyard Chardonnay 2016

A very fine vintage of this wine. Retains some of the signature electric acidity and saline notes but also has a more finessed and rich overall feel than in prior vintages. Really good — 7 years ago

Electric, brioche, mineral, awesome, love 2008, had this bottle at cellar temp, so slightly warm, as we like, showed flawless!

Photos of their cellar holding close to 60,000 bottles, intimate.

Wachauer Liebedich Grüner Veltliner 2015

Crazy energy, electric and energizing on the palate. Tart apple, grapefruit, crisp yellow plum, hint of white peach, crushed chalk and sponti/yeasty funk (?). There's a distinct saline note, crisp and focused throughout. Finish is a melange of pepper spice and pleasant astringency mixed with citrus zest. This wine always brings so much to the table for the price. Much more purity of fruit and rock than last vintage. — 9 years ago

Somlói Juhfark 2013

Alder Yarrow
9.5

There is really only one grape variety that I know of in the world that deserves to always have an exclamation mark: Juhfark! Or as I like to shout, Juhfaaaaaaaark! (pronounced you-fark). Grown only on the tiny little hill of Somló, an ancient underwater volcano, in Southwestern Hungary, it is among my favorite grape varieties and simply one of the world’s coolest wines. @sap_somlo is one of the best producers of it, coaxing out its bee pollen and chamomile scents and electric neon lemon, citrus peel, and yellow herb flavors, all layered on top of the deep volcanic minerality. The longer you let these wines age, the more they taste like rocks. Tired of the same old flavors in your white wines? Get thee some Juhfark! — 5 years ago

Domaine des Roches Neuves (Thierry Germain)

Clos Romans Saumur Chenin Blanc 2016

Pop and pour (from the fridge, so colder than cellar temp to start). On the nose: laser focus, electric green apple, soft oxidative notes and a touch of lanolin, sour lemon. On the palate: stunning acidity, sea salt, lemon, sour apple, fantastic weight and density, and so clean. Just lovely now, but plenty of room to pick up weight. Wait a while for next bottle, but pretty spectacular already. — 5 years ago

Miani

Colli Orientali del Friuli Friulano

As always with Miani, an extraordinary show, well beyond Grand Cru quality. Developing complexity, balanced and a long finish. Dense and broad, with a sharp en linear structure with its trademark electric and salty minerality on the mid palate. The wine provides such a drinking experience today, but with the structure and intensity that’s provided, I can only imagine that this will have a long life ahead...and I will keep wondering if this man have a limit on what’s possible.. — 8 years ago
