2021 vintage. Last tasted 1.7.26 (9.2) and 10.8.25 (9.2). Picked up another case for the resto to have (another) cheap chicken BDX to drive. The St. Julien class shines through in the nose, body and finish. Classy. NV | a tasting at Brabantse Wijn Sociëteit opened my eyes for champagne from the Côtes de Bar, like this one. 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. Made with 20% reserve wine. It’s bouquet is its greatest quality: refinement, brioche, yeast and beautiful fruit like peach and apple. Good acidity. Paired with scrambled eggs breakfast. Merry X-Mas. 🎄🍾 — 4 years ago

2021 was a cooler finesse year in CdP and it shows with this wine. Savory nose: charcuterie, dried plums and fig. It doesn’t drink hot, plenty of snappy acidity, some spicy notes, wild cherry and grippy tannins on the finish. A lot of smokiness with a bit cedar, green pepper but not a lot of fruits but some was in there. Color was so dark all the way to the edge. Think I need to drink up a bit more and reduce my supply. — 4 years ago

Sanlúcar de Barrameda was the port that Christopher Columbus set off from in 1492. Just 1 year earlier, duties on wine exports from Sanlúcar had been abolished to take advantage of English merchants desperate for new supply after the loss of Bordeaux.

It began a centuries-long romance between Sherry and English wine lovers, as immortalized in Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 2, when Falstaff glorifies sturdy Spanish 'sack' over thin Bordeaux 'claret' and Rhine 'hock'.

But the honeymoon, quite literally, was not to last. Henry VIII's divorce from Catherine of Aragon drove a wedge between England and Catholic Europe, and left English wine lovers in need of a new source once again. But Sherry fanatics wouldn't have to go entirely without. When Sir Francis Drake sailed into Cádiz and burned the Spanish fleet in 1587, he carried away 2,900 butts of Sherry - enough to supply London for years - as his most famous prize.

Pale lemon color with aromas of ripe fruits, citrus, nutty and flinty scents. On the palate flavors of apple, peach and orange citrus, cinnamon notes, well balanced with acidity. Medium+ finish ending with nutty toasty spice, mineral and citrus notes. Good now! — 4 months ago
