Forty-plus years on, people still talk about the greatness of the 1982 vintage in Bordeaux. There are multiple factors that contribute to this and it’s fair to say that Robert Parker’s reaction played a major role in the early popularity; certainly in the States. While some may say that 1982 was merely a “good” vintage by today’s standards, I think history has proven it to be empirically special; there was just so much quality from top to bottom. And yet, even with the high praise of the vintage, the tone shifts to hushed whispers when the 1982 Mouton gets mentioned. Up until that point, the Chateau had sort of underachieved after receiving its unprecedented promotion in 1973. But in 1982, a year full of great wine, they created a legend and firmly cemented their First Growth status. Today, I’m pleased to report the plaudits for the ’82 are all warranted.
Opened and double-decanted earlier in the day. The ’82 Mouton pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core with some sediment; almost youthful when compared to many of the other older wines poured on the night. On the nose, the wine is developing still; loaded with cassis, black berries, leaf tobacco, leather, and fine baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with fabulous structure. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and full of power. A stunning wine and well in its prime…a window I expect will remain open for a longtime to come. Drink now with bacchanalian abandon and through 2082. — 7 months ago
This is a dark wine. It looks dark, smells dark and tastes dark. The nose brings blackberry, plum, coffee and black tea. There is very little oak in the aroma package, if any. The palate shows dark fruit as well, with a clean and healthy tannic structure. The finish is not terribly long, but it is juicy and flavorful. — 2 years ago
Luv this Syrah! A beautiful dark purple magenta. Big nose for sure filled with aromas of smoked meat, that well-known Cayuse funk, and dark cherry with notes of vanilla, wet tea bag perfume and some lingering pine scents. Taste - a delicious, smooth and juicy wine. A tart cherry and dark plum combo pleases the palate with smoked bacon, cedar and bitter chocolate followed by a peppery crushed slate medium plus finish. What a delight this Easter Day! — 3 years ago
Definitely decant for an hour-plus — 7 years ago
Deep purple in color; black cherries, blackberries, and wood smoke on the nose; medium plus acidity; high tannins; tastes like black plums, blueberries, wet slate, and a hint of black pepper with a really long finish. — 4 months ago
I reviewed this vintage back in 2020 and gave it a mediocre 8.8, but it’s developed since then. Dark red fruit on the nose. Soft touch of cassis on the front, but its fruitiness has faded in the five years it’s been sitting on my wine rack revealing some luscious tannins. Slightly tart base notes kick in on the mid palate, while some mineral high notes dominate the finish. Medium long finish. Very nice! — 5 months ago
Nearly 20 years in bottle. It is still ascending will drink well for another 15 days plus years.
From a warm vintage. Beautiful, even toned fruits with elegant earth & amazing lead pencil bloom for days.
This is approaching its peak, another 5 years from its peak.
Well resolved wine-fruits. The fruits are juicy, blackberries, black raspberries, plum skin, dark cherries & slightly, poached strawberries with a highlight of pomegranate. Mocha, dark chocolate, black tea, sandalwood, sandstone, limestone, some mushroom notes, dark, rich turned earth w/ dry leaves, dry tobacco, dry leather, dry herbs, dry stone, caramel notes, dry, withering, dark, purple & red flowers with excellent acidity, balance, tension, structure and finish for days that lasts 90 seconds. — 7 months ago
The bottle of 2014 Pontet-Canet showed better than the previous one at the 10-Year-On tasting in London. This offers much more restraint on the nose. It's quite precise, with greater mineralité seeping through the black cherry and cassis fruit. The palate has a sorbet-fresh entry, fine tannins and a silky sheen. The oak is fully subsumed after a decade, plus there is a little more depth on the finish compared to previous showings. This is a fine example of the vintage, and bottles should drink well over the next 12 to 15 years. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the Pontet-Canet dinner in Washington DC. 2 hour decant(decent fine/chunky sediment). A majestic purplish dark magenta color. On the nose: bursting from the glass are notes of red and black fruit, charred wood, milk chocolate, some mint, touch of cigar box. Taste: smooth, delicate, elegant wine with red berries/plum, leather, gravel, herbaceous, mocha, and a spiced tobacco medium plus finish. YUM! Drinks well with the decant, but no hurry, time to go. — 2 years ago

Best Sauvignon in Italy. — 7 years ago
1 hour decant(lots chunky/fine sediment). A gorgeous inky purplish garnet color. On the nose: dark fruit, forest floor, smoked meat, floral, cigar wrapper, pencil lead. Taste: smooth, rich, creamy mouthcoating wine with blackberry/dark cherry, dark chocolate, earth, tobacco, baking spice, and a cedar/graphite medium plus finish with some slight dusty tannins. Had this 2 years ago, and it's improved. In the beginning of its drink window at 18 years? Wow — 4 months ago
Nose: that brown note like the hofer. Lifting florals.
Palate: hint heat goes away. Medium cherry. Spice. Balancing bitterness.
