Monthly WTF guys blind tasting group. This month was our annual, and famed, Left Bank vs Right Bank theme. All wines served blind as usual. Started off with a Rosé and a champagne. Great night.
This was the first of two Calon Segurs of the evening. Extremely well balanced. Aromatics of cassis, herbs and baking spices (nutmeg?). Sweet espresso and pipe tobacco on the palate. Red fruit dominant. Feels like it’s just opening up. Thanks @Ryan G . — 6 years ago
Monthly WTF wine group meet up. This month is new world vs old world Rhône’s. All wines tasted blind. 3 flights.
Drinking really nice right now. Black peppercorn spice, roasted dark red and black fruits, and some smoked meat. Didn’t pick up a lot of iron. Smooth. Good acidity and tannin. Thanks @Bill Makens — 6 years ago
Monthly WTF group. Theme this month was merlot. All wines tasted blind.
I guessed this was French and that it was mid-2000s. Quite a bit of herbal notes, soft plum and stewed red and black fruits. Low acidity. Came across as over the hill a bit, which is surprising given the vintage. Still a nice merlot from Sonoma. — 6 years ago
Monthly WTF wine group meet up. No true theme this month. Some wines tasted blind.
Tasted blind. Herbal tomato, stewed meat (but very faint), and a burnt rhubarb on the nose. Very resolved and put together. Little white pepper and charred old black cherry on the finish. Didn’t get much iron out of this like I do with northern Rhône...I called it Grenache. Thanks @Bill Makens — 6 years ago
A unique and strange nose. Leather and crab apples. Has a sweet tart flavor. Raspberry and tasty tart pie cherries. WTF? This is Zin? It’s like a Barbera, Chianti, Valdigué, Zin. — 7 years ago
Monthly WTF wine group. Special event this month as Ben provided all ‘80s Napa cabs. A few of us chipped in and provided some whites/bubbly.
Middle of the pack out of the wines tonight. Still quite nice with a decent amount of cherry jubilee and cassis. Tied with the ‘86. — 7 years ago
Monthly WTF wine group meet up. Theme was “bring something good”. All wines (minus the bubbles and SB) were tasted blind.
This one was tough. In my experience, I normally pick up more white pepper aromatics. My guess was Albariño due to the floral, yet slightly sweet, structure of the wine. Herbal front half, sweeter back half. However, we were told that “canned green beans” can be a giveaway for GV. Kudos to Jeff who guessed varietal and house! Thanks, @Colby Siratt . — 6 years ago

I think this was my WOTN. It was ripe, showing smoked meat, roasted plum and baked blackberry pie aromatics. Full bodied, smooth, balanced between fruit and savory notes. Seems to be open for business now. I called this ‘08 Left Bank. — 6 years ago
Monthly WTF wine group meet up. This month is new world vs old world Rhône’s. All wines tasted blind. 3 flights.
Very unique. Had no idea SA was doing wines like this. I called this old world Syrah. Acidic, full while also being light on the palate. Tar, blackberry, sweet oak, and granite. The more it opened, the more ripe it showed. Thanks @Will Adams — 6 years ago
Monthly WTF group. Theme this month was merlot. All wines tasted blind.
I opened this as a starter for everyone and was very pleased. For around $25, this is a wonderful champagne. Roasted lemon & lime alongside brioche aromatics. Very creamy mousse. Chalky minerality on the palate. Honeyed guava, touch of honeycomb. Really good acidity. I was introduced to this by @David T ; thanks David! — 6 years ago
Monthly WTF wine group meet up.
Much more tart and spice fruit driven compared to the Spring Mtn. Blackberry and chalk on the nose...granite too. Lush on the palate! Wow. Black cherry tobacco, plum, and a streak of cherry tart. Not much blue fruit here. Very balanced. Thanks @Dan Fitzgerald — 7 years ago

Toasted Graham cracker, cassis, and even some old cedar wood. Structure was still in tact and young tasting. — 7 years ago
Better than I dreamed! No such thing as too bitter. So imagine you took a s’more, doused it in, say Montenegro tossed it in a fire. This beauty is The Best Amaro I’ve tasted yet. Smoke, bitter, sugar, wood and spice. WTF this is the genius thing we all need. — 7 years ago
Monthly WTF guys blind tasting group. This month was our annual, and famed, Left Bank vs Right Bank theme. All wines served blind as usual. Started off with a Rosé and a champagne. Great night.
Another producer I was not familiar with. Great aromatics of espresso, blackberry jam & baked fig. Palate was blue and black fruit dominant with sandalwood and dark chocolate. Touch sweet. Enjoyable now. I called this ‘12-14 Right Bank. Thanks @Michael Rariden . — 6 years ago

The first of two GPLs from the evening. Lots of saddle leather mixed with ripe fruit on the nose. Underripe black-cherry on the palate with an herbal dominants finish. Drink now. Thanks @Will Adams . — 6 years ago

Not familiar with this producer. This was surprisingly quite tannic. Graphite, underripe red and black fruits with a softness in the middle. I called this ‘08 Right Bank. Thanks @Benjamin Keator . — 6 years ago
Monthly WTF group. Theme this month was merlot. All wines tasted blind.
My guess was domestic and that it was a 2013-2015. Very surprised this was French. I found it to be a very modern expression. Ripe fruits, licorice, plum, cassis, and just a faint hint of leather at last sip. I imagine its French pedigree would have shown itself more as the night went on. Really enjoyed this. — 6 years ago
Monthly WTF wine group meet up.
Potpourri, fresh squeezed blackberries, currant, and candied teriyaki. Plush on the palate, with more acidity than ‘14. Structure here seems more beefed up. I waited an hour or so to try, and it was very soft. Full fruit spectrum (red, blue and black). Muddled mulberry with a flavor punch finish. Thanks for opening @Weston Eidson . — 7 years ago

This was the winner of flight 1. Insane structure alongside fruit. Not musty or funky at all. Old red and black fruit with plenty of tannin and acidity. — 7 years ago

Wtf. Very weird. Smells a bit like hot shit, orange peels and fish. Smooth, grassy, dried sweet orange peel. — 6 years ago
