Jacques Selosse

Initial Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne Chardonnay

Disgorged August 2018. Initial with a little age is just incredible and really allows it to reach its full potential. 2018 disgorgement is showing fabulously, totally in the zone with distinctive Selossien aromatics, a rich, powerful and textural palate with racy acids and a chalky mineral core. There’s both freshness and integrated oxidative complexity yielding a complete, balanced and seamless Champagne. Nothing like Selosse 💛 — 7 months ago

Cuvée Max Spätburgunder 2015

This evening I met a couple of friends for a pop and pour, and I grabbed this bottle to open first because it was that kind of day. My word of the day immediately came to mind when I tasted this wine because it was that kind of delicious.

Cuvée Max is named after its head winemaker Max Himstedt. Rheihngau Germany is more known for Riesling, but the region also has spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). This wine is sourced from 80 year old vines. They say this wine is delicious and compelling, and they are not wrong.

German Pinot. Full stop, this wine is perfection. How am I just now learning about German Pinots?

My take is that German Pinots have actually benefited from climate change.

Château Palmer

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Delectable Wine
9.8

The 2016 Palmer is a brilliant wine from Thomas Duroux, though I feel it will ultimately be surpassed by the 2018. You cannot argue with the nose: intense black cherries and raspberry fruit, crushed violets and crème de cassis (as if there was a touch of Pauillac in there). The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, sensual tannins, perfect acidity, velvet smooth with layers of chocolate-tinged black fruit, hints of black pepper and cedar towards the sustained finish. It is a fabulous Palmer that will give much pleasure. Tasted at the Palmer vertical at the château. (Neal Martin, Vinous, August 2023)

Les Chasseignes Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2020 Sancerre Les Chasseignes is a ripe and round expression with sweet pineapple fruit flavors. The limestone proportion of the clay-limestone vineyard brings tension and texture that lightly holds the mouth, providing a satisfying finish. It's a gently refreshing acidity, leaving a gently fresh rather than zesty conclusion. For drinking now to the medium term. (Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, August 2022)

Château Climens

Barsac 1er Cru Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2011

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2011 Climens has a fresh, lifted, mineral-driven bouquet which has closed down a little. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh. A lively, tensile finish, with hints of stem ginger thatlinger on the aftertaste. This is drinking beautifully. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022. Château Durfort-Vivens

Margaux Cru Classé en 1855 Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2015 Durfort-Vivens has a perfumed bouquet with more ripeness and perfume than the previous vintage. Buoyant red berry fruit, blueberry and a touch of violet, there is perhaps more Margaux-like than the 2014. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy with a fine acidity, a touch of white pepper and clove towards the finish and a hint of espresso on the aftertaste. This is a superb Durfort Vivens, arguably the finest up to that point. Tasted twice, both at the château and at Jascott's Bordeaux tasting in London. (Neal Martin, Vinous, August 2023)

Brewer-Clifton

Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2020

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2020 Chardonnay (Sta. Rita Hills) is a terrific appellation-level wine. Hints of pear, mint, lemon peel and white flowers all grace this expressive, sculpted Chardonnay from Brewer-Clifton. My only quibble is a slightly aggressive edginess that hopefully will soften over time. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2022)
