Christmas is for Claret!
2003 Chateau Montviel, Pomerol, Bordeaux
#enmagnum
In the PERFECT place right now, the nose and aroma is pronounced and full with deeply complex layers of black cherry, black plum, sweet tobacco, roast beef, sweet mint and a dusting of mocha. The palate is seamless, front to back with ripe and fine tannin. A beautiful 13.5% abv.

Classic, reminds me of Napa Cabs from the early to mid 90s but better, more seamless. Buy and drink with a decant or hold, the best young version of a DC wine I have ever had.

WOTN. Seamless, delicious. Pretty dark fruit with hints of black licorice and anise. Long smooth finish. Nothing hard and well crafted. — 9 years ago
Loved this wine. While the 2011 Brio was tasting a little better this day this wine will age better. Big and bold but seamless, just a beautiful wine. Fruit, acidity, silky tannins and all the components to be a stunning wine with some bottle age. — 10 years ago
Powerful yet seamless!! Dried dark fruit still present amongst a plethora of earth, gravel, dark spice notes. — 10 years ago
Seamless and complex. Really fantastic wine. — 10 years ago
A clean and clear appearance that is a pale lemon-gold in color.
The nose is medium+ in intensity, with both primary and secondary aromas which at first seemed rounder, but grew to be sharper and more intense than the entry level Sancerre.
The lemon citrus is there, but this time is thicker like a lemon curd. Ginger notes appear here as well. The nose is just as pungent as the entry level with herbs, but the level is more intense and the aromas overall are broader and deeper. The mineral note seems more subdued by the oak, but it is noticeable and seems more like smoked salt. The oak is not so much "oaky", it seems more textural to the other aromas of the nose like a seasoning, rather than any actual flavor. Aroma complexity is medium+.
The palate is a noticeable step up from the entry level wine in intensity (medium+) and much sharper complexity, with more body as well (medium). There is a feeling of a creamier texture, but not in flavor. This wine is very dry as well, it is lean and clean on the palate with high acidity.
The finish is long, with the flavors of lemon curd, ginger, smoke and fresh herbs sailing on for 30+ seconds.
From 70 year old vines, this is a high quality wine, maybe one of the best Sauvignon Blanc I have ever tasted. The wine is impeccably balanced and seamless from the attack to the long finish., Great now, this can go easily another 5 years adding depth and complexity from aging. This wine is one year older than the entry level Sancerre, and typical of Boulay, the higher end bottlings are more expressive with a few years of age. — 10 years ago
Perfectly balanced and seamless! — 8 years ago
nose gives herbed meat, garrigue, black berry, black plums, faint ink.... this is sweet, inky and rich, but never appears heavy. a seamless blend of black and red fruits. — 8 years ago
Spectacular! Mind blowing. One of my top 10 of all time. On every serious wine lover’s bucket list, and here we had a nigh perfect bottle. While aromatically a little recalcitrant, you still got some of the Margaux violets and potpourri on the nose, hints of clove, all trying to shake off their doldrums. But on the palate, it was timelessly ravishing. The finesse, richness, balance and smoothness, with an underlying, almost flabbergasting mixture of complexity and delicacy, was just astonishing. The finish is marvelously sweet and intense, with chocolate and cassis and utterly seamless tannins. This is a miracle of wine making and an exaltation of vintage and terroir besides. Wow! And bravo! We can only pray for an encore of such a wine. — 9 years ago
Terrific wine. Expressive nose, mineral, stone fruit, melon. Seamless, flavorful, fresh, and complex in mouth with persistent finish. Quite youthful, will benefit from a few more years in bottle. — 10 years ago
The final wine in a trio of Betz wines tasted with assistant winemaker Louis Skinner, the Pére De Famille Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 is seamless and well-crafted. The nose is a gathering storm of blackcurrant, blueberries, milk chocolate, and violets. Structured and spectacularly dense in the mouth with saturating, tooth-staining layers of black and blue fruit, a touch of Welches grape jelly, anise, and sweet tobacco. This finish is lengthy, velvety, wonderful. 14.5% ABV | Sample — 10 years ago

This wine is getting popular in some circles...had it 4 times recently. Seamless lovely NSG — 8 years ago
Alive, plush, velvety, seamless, masculine but elegant; best '83 (my birth year!) I'll ever taste I'm sure. — 10 years ago
This was all fruit and flowers for me, with a little bit of minerals--overall aromatic, intense, and complex, but is this northern rhone Syrah? I don't know what the producer was going for, but I would have liked more savory and meaty character to this. Nonetheless, this had seamless tannins, plenty of acid, and a solid finish--I want to try again in 5, 10 years to see where this goes. (Rating for drinking today). — 10 years ago

Much more open than the Tignanello drank next to it, but wasn't as seamless. Very expressive ripe red berry fruit (jolly rancher?) and smokiness. It just seems the wine was a little off-kilter and didn't drink as easy as the Tignanello. But very good wine nevertheless. — 8 years ago
