This was our red wine selection for dinner at Corvino Supper Club and my first experience with the 2008 Tondonia. We let this sit in a decanter for about an hour while we enjoyed the Raul Perez “Atalier”. No formal notes due to the setting but I recall that it starts a little green (not all that unusual for young Tondonia). Red cherries, harissa, zatar, and dill on the nose. So fresh! Red cherries, earth, leather, and ferrous minerals on the palate. Medium+ acid, medium+ tannin. Lovely. — 4 years ago
A project of Raul Perez. Old vines Mencía and 3 other indigenous varieties. Violets and cherry on the nose. Palate dominated by typical iron/blood flavor of Mencía with red fruit. Stony backbone with softer tannins. Long finish. Young but outstanding potential. This guy is a serious vintner. — 5 years ago
Ok... I admit it... this straggler Spanish Albariño lost it’s way in my cellar. 10 years old for a grape not altogether known for longevity... what do I expect? Medium gold in the glass... clear...broken cork. Amazing aroma of pineapple, lychee, and peach. The wine is still alive.. still offering up bright acidity and round weighted fruit. Poured too cold, the aromas intensify as it warms. The wine is rich, round and complex...playing with your palate. I was prepared to dump, had a lessor wine at the ready. But... hell no. This wine rocks. Mr. Perez is often referred to as a trail-blazing maverick...what do I know. The wine is a wonder! — 5 years ago
Over the last few years, I’ve grown quite fond of Raul Pérez’s wines. The challenge is, some of them can be rather elusive. “La Penitencia” is one of those wines. So I was pretty excited to try this. Popped and poured; consumed over three days. Wine pours deep ruby bordering purple and slightly turbid with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity. There does appear to be a small amount of fine sediment clinging to the side of the glass. On the nose, the wine is intense. There’s obvious presence of VA and overall, comes across natty; more than any other Raul Pérez wine I’ve had before. That being said, it is remarkably fresh with notes of cherry and blackberry; the pits, seeds, stems and all. There’s also spices, cinder block, and un-excavated basement. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+, bordering on high acid. Again, bright red and dark fruits along with pomegranate, grapefruit, and basil. The finish is a touch mousey with a biscuity sort of thing happening but it’s tolerable and I’m pretty sensitive. This would be too wild for many. Reminds me a bit of Fabio Gea’s “Onde Gravitational”. Plenty of life ahead for these. As it stands, I have another bottle and I won’t be in any particular rush to drink it. Lovely stuff. — 3 years ago
Before we get into the notes on this wine, let’s get something out of the way first: the labeling on the Ultreia branded wines by Raul Pérez is downright confusing. The entry-level is designated “Saint Jacques” (which is a fabulous wine and incredible QPR)…and then comes this plain label “Ultreia” before you step up to the other designations of “Valtuille”, “La Claudina”, etc which are higher-end??. It’s really tough to understand the hierarchy. The good news? It really doesn’t matter when all the wines are really quite stunning. And this bottle is absolutely representative of Señior Pérez's impeccable style.
Popped and poured; consumed over three days. Best on Day 2. On the nose, blue berries, dark cherries, brambles, exotic spices…giving way to spiced lamb after a lot of air, roses, incense, and underbrush. On the palate, red fruit which transitions to more of a darker fruit profile after Day 2, with some mushrooms, deli meat and minerals. Really sound structure. Medium-plus acid, medium plus tannin. The finish is long and satisfying; tongue smacking. Even at $35, this is a killer deal. What a wine. — 4 years ago
Love child! Never meant to beeee.... others have described this as a bastard infanta of burgundy & bierzo. This is a true statement. Dusty cherries, strawberries, great tannins, balance, hint of funk. In a spot right now that hints at future glories, tertiary aromas beginning to develop. All very Burgundian but with the extra womp of a bierzo backbone. Fabulous. — 5 years ago
Very dark, supersilky and soft. Like drinking velvet bjt after a little while a lot of dark fruit but then even later you will feel the soft but remakable tannins. Very nice and complex but not loud at all — 5 years ago
Cibo Grille, Ft Myers, with Lee and Raul. Similar to a Pinot Noir. Acidic, complex, lighter. Would order again. — 6 years ago
Blown away that I am enjoying this wine so much! James Suckling gave it a 91. Randon grocery/wine store pick for $15. QPR considered in rating; fully expected this to be tight as a drum. Right Bank blend, ripe tannins, boysenberry, bing cherries, plum, soft baking spices, eucalyptus and oddly enough am picking up maple syrup! Little surprised at the 14.5 alc! — 3 years ago
Our local purveyor being out of Raul Perez’s Atalier bottling we needed a substitute and fast. This is a fabulous wine. Extensive time on lees, bottle aging. Initial funk on opening, decanted an hour. Huge acid, great salinity and creaminess take this to the next level. Aromatics on point. Great work. — 4 years ago
@Delectable Wine this is the Rapolao cuvée. Have we been calling Perez a rock star for too many years now? Let’s just settle on “master”. This wine is refined, aromatic, balanced, and beautiful. And the other “crus” are even better. Forward! — 5 years ago
Wow - best mencia I’ve ever had. Palacios is an extremely talented winemaker who is well-known for fine Riojas. But he also owns vineyards in Bierzo growing old vine mencia. This wine is fabulous - medium-bodied, fresh, and lively with gorgeous red fruit, garrigue, and herbs. The fine-grained tannins and bright acidity make this wine a joy to drink. I’ve had many of Raul Perez’s mencias - they are very good; this is better. 2017 vintage on April 21, 2020 — 5 years ago

Raul Perez is a bit of a wine rock star, so I admittedly came to this 17$ entry level new project of his (with the Prieto varietal) with baited breath…& it did not disappoint. It drinks like…surprise.. a baby Morgon, with clean red cherries set in a fairly mineral frame. Quite lush on the nose. Not for acid hounds per se but still so vital & fresh. — 3 years ago
