Cannubi Barolo Nebbiolo 2007

Extremely impressive showing from this Barolo - fully integrated and clearly at peak plateau of drinking (likely to continue drinking well for another handful of years but wouldn’t wait) - this was very masculine in style presenting a full bodied palate but the tannins were soft and silky. Meaty, truffle, tobacco with dark dark fruits - certainly worth buying — 5 months ago

Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

Classic Barolo via the stellar 2010 vintage (now +15 yrs). Medium / pale garnet and pours to a transparent center. Pop-and-pour to taste, with a much needed 2-hour decant to follow. Bone dry, high tannin and medium+ acidity, just like I like it. Tons of dark red fruit; this is drinking exceptionally well now, but would certainly benefit from 10-15+ more years in the cellar as the nose continues to develop. The finish is long / strong and heavily structured; simply a gorgeous expression of the Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva! — 8 months ago

Lapideus Umbria Bianco Trebbiano 2019

Opened and decanted shortly before dinner; enjoyed over the course of two hours. The 2019 pours a very rustic looking, deep straw bordering gold color; medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with lovely notes bruised and dried fruits: dried apricot, bruised yellow apple, candied oranges, yellow flowers, herbaceous (rosemary?), and old wood. And yet there’s a freshness there that is undeniable. On the palate, the wine is dry with low tannin and medium + acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is very long. Another vintage of Lapideus and another beauty from Giampiero. These wines make me think and each time I get to enjoy one, I’m reminded of why wine can be so special. Drink now through 2029. Bottle No. 0859/2655. — 8 months ago

Monvigliero Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

Mention “Monvigliero” around any Barolo nut and there is a better than good chance you might witness the following behavior: waxing poetic in hushed tones, sighing, swooning…possibly fainting. Monvigliero truly is the zeitgeist. For over 40 years, Comm. G.B. Burlotto (and Fratelli Alessandria before them), have quietly been making great single-vineyard Monvigliero and it was only in the last 10-15 years that the world started to catch on to the magic that was happening in Verduno. In the last handful of years alone, there have been a flurry of producers with holdings in Monvigliero that have released their own single-vineyard expression. However, what many may not realize is that Enrico Scavino and his daughters have been producing a “Monvigliero” since 2007, making them one of the first half dozen to do so. I’m only suggesting that the Scavino’s knew there was something special there well before the hype train came to the station.

Popped and poured; enjoyed with dinner and over the course of a couple hours. The 2020 “Monvigliero” pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. The nose is gorgeous; seemingly darker fruited with blackberry, pomegranate, black cherry lozenges, roses and spice box. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin (though friendly) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and lithe. An elegant wine and downright delicious. I think Paolo Scavino did a fabulous job of capturing the synergy of what Mother Nature gave in the 2020 vintage and the source of their fruit in the heart of the Monvigliero MGA. These are very early days for this wine but it’s already a joy to drink now but I expect this will continue a lovely evolution through 2038, easy.

Meriame Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

A wine to celebrate with. A deep, lusty burgundy color in the glass. Classic Barolo characteristics on the nose with raspberries, cherries, and dried figs. An entire bouquet of flowers and soft vanilla. Spice, mocha, and more than a touch of oak.

Still young and with miles to go, this is still a worthy example of the beauty of Barolo. Dense and firm throughout with tight tannins. Takes plenty of time and air to fully open up. Nice structure and balance compliments the palate. Cranberries and cloves in the mouth with leather and cigar smoke. Nice now but will better with more time.

Delightfully medium-to-full bodied. Paired well with a hearty pasta rigatoni in homemade ragú sauce meal. Notes of dark fruit especially blackberry and cherry. Excellent bottle for any occasion. Well-priced at USD$19 but likely to sell for USD$45 at a restaurant. — 9 months ago
