Aglianico is IMO indeed a quite difficult cepage to understand and consequently love. I guess the good ones are just too few and also i reckon it is quite a hard task to pick the perfect moment, when the wine is at peak. We, in Italy, call the wines made from this varietal Barolo of the South for some reasons(see tannin and complexity) and ageing is a very important part of the process too.
However after you have a 1928 Taurasi which blows your mind away you can only search for more and wait for the next illumination 🙏...it doesn't happen with all the grape varietal, does it?

This dark wine has a fruity nose of blackberry and plum, but there are some more savory notes as well. Black pepper, cigar box and black olive also come through. On the palate, licorice and plums are in the forefront of one of the fruitier flavor profiles I have tasted in Apulian Primitivos. The 16% alcohol is not as overpowering as I imagined it would be. The tannins are fairly forceful and the acidity is refreshing. This wine drinks really well and will pair nicely with a marbled rib eye steak. — 4 years ago

Brick in color. Nose is cedar, dusty fruit, and old leather. Just a little pungent. The mouthfeel is great. There is bright fruit and great acidity. Medium bodied. Strawberries, raspberry, cedar, and leather. Great tannins. The nose and end shows its age. I feel like I’m 2 years late to a great party. — 6 years ago
