Some old vine southern hemisphere Carignane tonight. Dense color. Still youthful looking. Boisterous nose of dark cherry and pungent blueberry. A nice yeasty note too, along with a smoky stony note. Soft and rich in the mouth. Lots of flavor density. I didn’t notice the ABV when I bought it in the sale bin, but it’s 15.5%!! Yikes! But I’m not getting much heat at all, weirdly. Probably not the best choice on a humid warm evening, but I’m enjoying it. — 5 hours ago

First wine grape planted in North America? You have my attention. Fascinating history of this varietal that I highly recommend reading up on if you’re lucky to have a friend like @Brendan Devine buy you the Wine Grapes tome. The wine itself is really tasty, desert-like in your mouth and has that full almost raisiny note that a lot of natural wines have. Give it a shot. — 5 years ago

Great find at the Polvo wine bar in Santiago. I've never had Carignan but this jumps out with blackberry, licorice, woody flavour. Nothing subtle about it. High acid, but all round lovely wine. More research required. — 8 years ago
