Reserve Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Herbal aromas (typically Margaret River) with Geranium Capsicum and a touch of menthol. Some green notes - medium weight. Savoury wins out over Cassis and black fruits. Not in the upper echelon of Margaret River Cabernet. Just a silver medal. We went to the Cellar Door some years ago and the story goes that the Reserve Cab was served at the wedding of Prince Frederick of Denmark to Sydney Real Estate agent Mary Donaldson originally from Tasmania now Crown Princess Mary and one day will become the Queen of Denmark. Fred is a keen sailor who was representing Denmark at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and they met at Sydney hotspot The Slip Inn where Fred was flashing his Black AMEX so the story goes and was captivated by Mary and the rest is history. — 5 years ago

Icon Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Was pretty closed to start with but opening up beautifully over a few days and really started to grow on me. Dark fruits, cedar, tobacco and a little violet on the nose. Became more structured and chewy the longer it was open. — 8 years ago

Margaret River Chardonnay 2009

Wow; how maturing #margaretriver #chardonnay does vary; see recent #cullen #2009 which was brassy, this gleaming green and plenty of it; #cullen restrained, this #capementelle is butch; nose power of smoke or burnt things, bottle age nose not simple, evidence of lees/ mlf from the smoke; palate chunky, lime juice, burnt toast you taste in 30 yo Eden Valley riesling; juicy smoke; rich, not terribly drying, acid taut, 13%, AUD 35, full bodied, no apparent reason for it to fade for a while; contained power. #uncorkedandcultivated #wineandfoodtours — 9 years ago

1997 vintage - on the downward slide but at 18 years of age, showing its classy pedigree - interesting to taste against the 04 tasted at the masked Zin tasting 1/12 ago - fruit has faded but structure & length maintained — 10 years ago

Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

This is the 2007 vintage. One of the better 2nd tier Marg River Cabernets for around less than half price of the big guns at approx $40. Not quite as good as the standard Vasse Felix or the Woodlands Margaret for the same price. Good fruit and herbal notes from a good vintage. 17.5+ — 10 years ago

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

More berry/cassis than leafy herbal Margaret River style - touches of capsicum though. Very enjoyable but I don’t know whether I would pick this as Margaret River in a blind tasting. Medium bodied but M+ intensity. Nearby neighbors of some of the big name producers without the price tag. Tasted another bottle 43 weeks later on 7th February 2020 with similar notes but showing more Margaret River herbaceousness. Excellent QPR for a Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon. 92 points. Tasted another bottle on 19th March 2022 with consistent notes. Pretty much a typical Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon. 3 bottles left. Tasted another on 3rd February 2023 with consistent notes. Had this with pasta. I didn’t think that was a good food/wine match but it worked perfectly. Tasted my 2nd last bottle on 28th June 2023. Certainly not a typical herbaceous Margaret River Cabernet. More cassis and blackberry like a South Australian Cabernet. — 6 years ago

Vasse Felix

Heytesbury Margaret River Red Blend

Big brooding nose of dark fruit, pencil shavings, and red meat. Massive, and tannic but fine tannins and with quality dark fruit to match. 8yo but still 8-10yrs too young. Super dry finish. Worth the wait for the px relative to good Bordeaux? 2008 vintage — 9 years ago

Kevin John Margaret River Chardonnay 2012

One of the richest of the Margaret River ultra-premium Chardonnays. Incredible, and would be 4-6x the price if this came from a Chassagne Montrachet producer. $95 USD. — 10 years ago

2005 vintage, rescued from the cellar today. What a testament to the quality of Margaret River Cabernet. Divine, the fruit shines through the palate and the briny tannin structure is magnificent. Enjoyed every sip! — 6 years ago

Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot 2012

Distinct pencil/graphite on the nose along with dark red fruit, and maybe lavender or geraniums. Restrained cherry, blackberries, and a hint of raspberry on the palate. Good tannins and acidity. Could drink now or put away for another year or so. Purchased K&L for around $20 — 8 years ago

Margaret River Chardonnay 2014

The LCBO is advertising this wine with a 94 score and selling it for under $20, which sounds and is too good to be true. Over-promising aside, though, it was a lovely wine. Well-balanced, with a good amount of oak and tropical fruit on the nose. A good companion for Thursday night BBQ sausages and corn. #laterwine — 9 years ago

Good, murky raspberry, bramble fruit mix up on the nose with a diligent touch of saddle leather and elegant farm yard (reminds me of muddy chocolate). In the mouth there are plenty of juicy, ripe red berry fruits plenty of fresh acidity and a spiced red fruit finish — 10 years ago
