Le Clos des Fées Grenache Blend 2013

Not seeing RP’s 95, but it’s good. Great spiced fruit nose. Ripe with a tart finish. Just a whiff of stinky. — 5 years ago

Thanks for the comment! I intend on opening the exact same one in the same vintage in a week time. Hervé Bizeul is very active on a wine forum in France called "la passion du vin" and argues that le Clos des fées should be put in a decanter for up to 24 hours before being tasted to make sure to experience it in the best possible conditions. It certainly sounds a bit exaggerated and I only meant to share his views on the topic.

I could certainly see that. This definitely gained weight the longer it was opened. The last glass was the best with 3 hrs in the bottle.

Cuvée J Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir 2008

A beautiful nose of soft red fruits, some spice, soulful plummy stuff. Very burgundinian but the plushness of US Pinot. On the palate this has great poise. Light but intense this has lovely fresh fruit and some gnarly wild herbs with underlying acidity and good length. Apparently the ‘j’ refers to Jayer cuttings being the source of the Pinot. If so, that would go some way toward explaining why this is so aromatic and balanced. Excellent — 6 years ago

Hope Family Wines

Treana Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah 2015

Hope family began their planting’s in 1978 & sold wine under the Hope Family label directly from the winery's tasting room. In 1990 the Hope ranches became the sole source of fruit for Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1996, they founded Treana Winery. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon & 25% Syrah. Aromas of sweet berry & spice notes. Flavors of currants and ripe berry with cacao, pepper and vanilla spice. Full body, rich tannins, good balance ending on the spicy side. — 7 years ago

Tenuta San Guido

Bolgheri Sassicaia Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2016

Part of Super Tuscan Horizontal tasting. All 2016 vintage Masseto, Ornellaia, Sassicaia, Solaia, Tignanello, Redigafi, and a mystery bottle (Phelps Insignia). The color of this wine was red, not purple like I was expecting. It was more Burgundian than Bordeaux-like. A bit on the subtle side. Refined. Still had good cherry and other red fruits, not overly tannic or oaky like I was expecting. This was a good wine, but my least favorite of the night. We had 2 bottles at the tasting and both drank the same. Not the typical Sassicaia profile and definitely not a 100 pt wine in my opinion. It was enough different than other Sassicaia I have had over the years that it left me scratching my head. I plan to source another bottle form a different purveyor to see if this was just an off lot. It was sourced from a reputable provider and has been in my cellar settling for a few months. — 5 years ago

Siccagno Nero d'Avola

Just a really enjoyable wine that is both hearty and even “ big” but still refreshing.
Clearly some Brett and some effervescent feel like may hint at VA, but I find both to be well integrated and enjoyable. A deep darker-side-of-red fruit profile: red and damson plum, dried red cherry, Black licorice, olive. Has a floral sense to it, and some exotic woody undertones as well earth - like a forest after the rain . A full bodied and almost lush wine that might recall the mouthfeel if a Napa cab, but with much more refreshing a acidity coming through - never the least bit cloying or overwrought. Simply a great wine with a broad food pairing potential. That said, I do wonder if it would taste dramatically different at the source. With zero sulphur amidst a long boat ride, life in distributor warehouses, a wine shop and ultimately my euro cave, whether the original intent is preserved in its entirety. Drinking fantastically but also wondering if peak drinking is 2-3 years ahead. Again, the sulphur thing...
