This is absolutely ridiculous. One of the best chardonnays I’ve ever had...all have been from Dan! Best nose on a Chardonnay I can remember. Salted popcorn kernels, toasted brioche, sweet caramel. Dark, half opaque ruby. Funky aromas come to the nose right away, in harmonic array between white truffles, mushrooms, a bit of cow manure, and red and dark cherry aromas. Wonderful presentation upon entrance in the palate, showing delicious cherry juice flavors that evolve onto darker fruits such as black currant and dates, but also a bit of vegetable V-8 juice, celery, and tomato juice as it evolves in your mouth towards a desirable lingering finish. What a pleasant surprise this wine is, made out of one of my favorite varietals, from Dan, Israel, for $10 ten US dollars?? This is really pretty good. The finish lingers with pretty savory flavors and V-8 juice. Even some coppery, bit of bloody mary flavors. Can't wait to try this with prime rib or beef bourgognon. 89+ pts. — 10 years ago

On the nose; a bit of a brett bomb to start. Even after 11 years in the bottle, it needed a good 2 hour decant. Stewed fruits of; huckleberry, boysenberries, blueberries, plums, black raspberries, dark & liqueured cherries. Black raspberry cola, figs & dates, black & white pepper, touch of smoke & grilled meats, menthol, used leather, dry stems, dark minerals, loamy dry top soil, right amount of baking spices, lilacs & liquid violets. The body is full, round & lush. Tannins perfectly resolved. They still have a little baby teeth. The structure, length, tension and balance are near perfect. Stewed fruits of; huckleberry, boysenberries, blueberries, plums, black raspberries, dark liqueured cherries & strawberries haunting the palate here and there. Black raspberry cola, figs & dates, black & white pepper, a touch of smoke & grilled meats, menthol, used leather, dry stems, dark minerals, loamy dry top soil, right amount & mix of baking spices, lilacs, liquid violets & red florals. The acidity is perfect and acts like a waterfall over the palate. The fruit floral, lightly spiced finish goes on and on and on. Standish does not have a U.S. importer as his wines are small productions and he has no issues selling nearly all of them down under. You can order from his mailing list but, the shipping costs from Australia are stupid. Look for bottles on the secondary markets. You’ll be glad you did. If you have or had reservations about Australian wine or Shiraz vs. Syrah, Dan’s wines will end those thoughts. We tasted with Dan at his winery in April. He is extremely knowledgeable and a very talented Winemaker. He made Torbreck for years before starting his own winery. Photos of; his Estate, Dan and his low yield vines. Funny how a nice evening can round in to form on a spontaneous whim!

You know if Dan is around that Aubert or Marcassin chardonnay is involved. Tonight, he was the reason for both! Normally, I love Ritchie. Possibly my favorite chard vineyard. The beeswax, waxiness/nuttiness that I get with this vineyard is so unique. A nice Chard but like most Aubert whites, give this at least 3-5 years. — 7 years ago

OK Delectable family: what do you call that moment after dessert and cheese when you stumble down to the cellar and ponder, "how do I go to the next level" when nobody can even level the table? We need a name for it, as that's where I was when Dan took my hand off the Henschkes in a "please put the weapon down slowly" mumble. Thankfully he aimed it at this pleasant, potent, young jammy 407 Cab that, as I can best recall, did a damned good job evoking a young Napa Cab. I think I said Round Pond? Ignore the score it's a hazy guess, but thanks Dan - we need a term for cellar friends like that, too! — 8 years ago
