Hamilton Russell Vineyards

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Chardonnay 2018

Paul J
9.7

Double blind wine tasting. 3 Whites and 3 Reds:

1. ‘18 Hamilton Russell Chard - WOTN across both whites and reds - complex, refined, fruit integrated with honey, oak, butter, cream, camomile.

2. ‘20 Hartenberg The Eleanor Chard - big wine that could use a few years. Nice fruit and lovely acidity. Mix between a White Burg and Rhone Blend.

3. ‘22 Far Niente Chard - potential, very young, not the best QPR. Reminded me of young Paul Hobbs single vineyard Chards.

1. ‘12 Giacomo Fenocchio 90 di Riserva Barolo - aged showed through nicely, but still lively with dark cherries and ample tannins.

2. ‘20 Vilafonte - decanted, but young and an absolutely massive wine. Black fruit, chewy, with decent sweetness.

3. ‘02 Origin Red Blend - nose of black tar and cigars. Zero fruit and big tar, tobacco, and bbq flavors. Bigger wine than I was expecting.

Great night with great friends!

Marchesi Antinori

Tignanello Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2016

Nice but not quite at the true top level, especially given the price. Decanted 4 hours which is necessary at this point. Nice pairing with a big T-bone steak cooked in the Tuscan style. Could use more acid on the finish. Probably needs a few years to come together. — 9 days ago

Dunn Vineyards

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 1997

Takes the reins as best ever Dunn Cabernet for me…needed 45 mins out of Magnum, nose all Bordeaux of cedar and cigar box with a touch of cassis. Velvety palate, layers of red cherry and chocolate espresso bean, long, long finish. Find and drink now if you can. — 12 days ago

Belle Glos

Clark & Telephone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

Crafted by Joseph J. Wagner, 4th generation winemaker, with winemaking roots in the Napa Valley since 1906. Deep Ruby with red berry fruit aromas, tea and sweet spice notes. On the palate flavors of jammy blackberry and cherry with pronounced sweet vanilla oak, cacao and pepper spice notes. Soft tannins and bright acidity, well balanced, with mineral tones on a long finish ending with toasty spice! Nice! — 12 days ago

Dog Point Vineyard

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2023

A nose of fresh, cool melon without too much sugar or underripe tanginess in either direction. On the tongue is fairly thick with a bit of honeysuckle and light ginger, very smooth and viscous with a bit of Black beech honey on the tongue. — a month ago

Enderle & Moll

Liaison Pinot Noir

Second from right. Beats red burgundies with ease…The 2022’s red and whites might be the best vintage they ever made. The whites are creative and unique - but the reds just floored me. Like a 1er Cru Gevrey Chambertin but better. Much better. Deep dark cherry galore, but also spice and it improved with oxidation over 48 hours, hints of lime, bark, just a touch of pine needles…fantastically framed at this point by high amounts at tannins. Even this mid level wine blowed my socks off. With a sense of place which the chiseled and fine tuned wines in Burgundy have lost. — a month ago

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1995

1995 vintage. Good fill. Excellent cork with minimal saturation. Decanted and throwing a tad extra sediment…a nice mix of chunky and powdery sed. Tasted after 30 minutes and 2 hours open and decanted. Light-medium body. Dark cherry and earth in the nose. These transferred over and slapped on a fudge chocolate note on the finish. In a good place now and not improving. Would seem to hold steady in this standing for another 3-4 years. 6.6.24. — 11 days ago
