Le Morette di Valerio Zenato

Lugana Mandolara Turbiana 2017

On the first night the mint leave/wintergreen aspect was overwhelming and weird. So I put it back in the fridge. On night 2, it’s calmed down and is quite nice. Still some intense sweet green herbal notes on the nose, but also showing fresh-sliced stone fruit and crushed rock notes. Quite flavorful, with same amalgam of herb-fruit-rock in the mouth. Juicy, and with good acidic tension. Surprisingly good, especially since I’m generally critical of Italian whites. — 6 years ago

North Coast Sauvignon Blanc

9.0

Our first time with this this Californian Sauvignon Blanc, we saw it before heading back across the border noticing the “Wine Enthusiast” tag giving it a 90 point rating and said “What the Heck” buying our duty free limit. A delightful and approachable wine is so different from the Sauvignon Blancs that we are use to. Representing an amalgam from selected North Coast vineyards it offers a balanced citrus and floral notes that are distinctive yet not overwhelming. We tasted grapefruit, green apple, washed stone and hints of straw combined into wonderful juicy finish. We will be buying this one again. 13.5% alc/vol. ~$16.00 USD Cheers 🍷🇨🇦🇺🇸 — 7 years ago

Waxwing

Flocchini Vineyard Petaluma Gap Syrah 2014

This wine has so much going on. It’s like a life-form amalgam of animal/vegetable/mineral. Color is like plasma. Nose has raw grass-fed beef, liquid stones, and mentholic Ben-Gay thing, resinous herbs, lime, charcoal ash, and tangy boysenberry. Seriously. Lots of shit happening. It is mouthfilling and loaded with clingy, soft tannin, and has bloody, minerally, dark berry skin flavors for miles. Long finish and good acids. Only 13.9%, which, these days, passes for low alcohol. Terrific wine. — 8 years ago

Enorama

Alexander Estate Mourvedre Grenache Rosé

My first Bulgarian wine and I am impressed by its complexity, by its ability to confirm all of my generalizations about the sheer exoticism of eastern Europe. This is a confusing, yet glorious amalgam of roses, pine, mountain air, and wild berries. This is Julie Andrews, spinning with arms spread, among seven wanderers genuflecting at vampire tombs. Disorienting. Vino di Vino. — 9 years ago

Alta

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2012

Color indicates the depth both in aroma and flavor. Bing cherry and stewed ripe raspberries in the nose. Lavender top note drills to both cranberry and macerated mulberry as a solid flavor foundation. The acidity holds the amalgam of flavors on the back palate for a long time. Enjoyable. — 9 years ago

Celebration Fresh Hop Ale

Fast-moving fizz-fuzz that drops like a curtain to reveal a Dubuffet-esque remnant. Caramel and ginger, maple wood, golden raisin, cinnamon bread and baked pear nose. Raspy cedar, pointed nettle, pecan shell and walnut. Toasted wheat germ, orange bitters. The aforementioned slow-cooked into a potent amalgam. Winter wood trolls with tropical bounties stuffed into squirrel holes. Go nuts! #sierranevada #ipa #freshhops #celebrationipa — 11 years ago

Gigondas La Cave

Les Primaires Gigondas Grenache Noir Syrah Mourvedre 2012

Pretty much at its peak. Nose is a nice amalgam of cracked stones, roasted herbs, and some blackberry fruit. Good intensity in the mouth. Loads of stony, savory flavors. Still some tannin, but with the fruit bowing out to savoriness, I’m thinking it’s time to drink up. — 7 years ago

Bass Phillip

Premium Gippsland Pinot Noir 2008

Mid crimson in colour with pale tinges. A brilliant perfumed nose with Cherries Stalks and a vegetal note. Palate staining intensity with a finish that goes On and On. An amalgam of flavours. I have often written on Delectable that this is Australia’s Best Pinot Noir producer and a wine like this just reinforces that view. Every now and again you will have a marvellous Bindi, By Farr, Yabby Lake or the many great Pinot’s coming from Tasmania but for consistency it has to be Bass Phillip. In summary whether you like the Old World or New World this is gorgeous Pinot Noir. — 8 years ago

Penfolds

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 1996

A lovey amalgam of aromas of blackberry mocha and aniseed which follow through onto the full bodied palate - very much the DNA of mature Penfolds. Not sure that anybody does the Cabernet Shiraz Blend better than they do. The Yalumba Signature would come close. Going to a Yalumba Dinner tonight so it will be good to reacquaint with the Signature. This was more enjoyable than its more expensive elder brother the Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet from the same year, 1996, drank recently - the latter lacking finesse. 69% Cabernet Sauvignon; 31% Shiraz. — 8 years ago

This, is remarkable wine. Your instantly captured by the aromatics; an amalgam of smokey, tangy, and tertiary sensations. Your struck with a snap of minerality, then a flood of rich, viscous, nutty flavors follow. You sit back and savor the mouth filling finish that seems to last forever. Thrilling .

Alpilles Cabernet Syrah 2010

50/50 cab Syrah, and an incredible amalgam of both. Nose heavily perfumed and somewhat flowery reminiscent of great norther rhones. Dark, deep, pure fruit with some balsamic and underlying purple flower notes. Also some red bell pepper in there if. Grippy, drying tannins - will get much better in a few years — 11 years ago

Tasted blind. Amalgam of spicy red fruits, herbal tone (American oak?), beginning of bottle aged tertiary notes. Based in color (medium with clear rim), mouthfeel (fine, fresh, firm an slightly chalky finish); my guess 2005 Rioja. Not too far off. — 12 years ago

Domaine Laurent & Karen Boussey

Vieilles Vignes Meursault Chardonnay 2015

On the leaner, more minerally side of the Meursault spectrum. Nose has a nice amalgam of light toast, butter, lemon-lime drizzled earthy, stony scents, and barely ripe pear. Intense and uncompromising in the mouth. There’s some fruit, but it’s more stony minerals and lemon oil, with smoky straw at the close. Will age a few more years for sure. — 6 years ago

Simposio Barolo Nebbiolo 2013

I don’t know whether there’s such a thing as a bargain Barolo, but if there is, this value priced wine is it. Nose has ripe cherry fruit, rose petals, spice, gravelly earth. In the mouth it’s a great amalgam of macerated cherry fruit and savory flavors, with almost a mentholic mineral note. Very nice acidity and some tannin for few more years of improvement. Terrific. — 6 years ago

This is 16 despite the label. Awesome nose. Big cherry fruit, some sweet oak, mint, soil tones, and just an amalgam of intense fruit. Really elegant and juicy with lithe silky tannins and such purity. Terrific structure and top notch finesse. Amazing purity and elegance. Long finish and very chewy. I think needs 3-4 years and/or a 3 hour decant. Terrific focus and freshness. Stunning balance. Awesome. Lovely stuff. — 8 years ago

Jean-Marie Renvoisé

Jasnières Chenin Blanc 2016

Gorgeous nose that’s an amalgam of flowers, chalky minerals, and crisp orchard fruit. On the sip, there’s at first a perfectly ripe, pure fruit note, but then there is both a flavor and tactile transition to intense crushed stoney minerals. Loads of energy and acids on the almost tannic finish. Very unique. Can’t believe how cheap this was (around $12 if I remember correctly). — 8 years ago

Delectable Wine

Cheesy fermentative overtones give way to a site-typical amalgam of fresh apple garlanded in honeysuckle and heliotrope. This is another of those Prüm Kabinetts that is watery in a positive sense of that word, combining watercolor-like transparency and wash of flavor with delicacy and refreshment. As with the corresponding Graacher, the finishing sense of wet stone and floral perfume is striking, and here a mouthwatering hint of salinity adds significantly to the appeal. This is very sophisticated for an Aussie Bordeaux blend; from a great Margaret River vintage but horrible in many other Australian regions; no jam, no lolly, no oak intrusion; just complex earth, forest, mushroom, tobacco and terroir amalgam; palate taut and tasting of the aromas; medium body captures a fine wine; cannot but expect the positive effect of the merlot; #drinkaussie #wa #margaretriver #ribbonvale #mosswood #cabernetmerlot #2011 #bordeauxblend — 11 years ago
