When & Where

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend

This wine needed about 3 hours to release. Initially tight with uncomfortable medicinal nose which then totally dissipated. Drinking now next day and you get the age of fully integrated but not fading tannins. Nose has a delightful dark fruit and smokiness. Great fit of nose and taste, meaning - when tastes after smelling the experience is consistent and not jolting. I think the color purple in a subdued way. Very nice. Memo to self: decant and watch for sediment, and enjoy three hours later. — 9 years ago

Belle Glos

Meiomi Pinot Noir 2012

Exceptionally wonderful to drink. Went perfect with the dry aged Liberty farms duck breast at Solage in Calistoga. A very fruity smelling drink that blends the best of coastal Pinot grapes. I would want a faucet installed in my house with this stuff coming out of it when I'm thirsty. — 10 years ago

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Where to start... actually, can't write. Drinking.
Edit: okay, this is just sick. Tar, layered minerals, and such beautiful fruit. It has barolo like elements, but is distinctly Howell Mountain. I am in love.

Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache Blend 1990

The essence of ripe cherries and strawberries invade every nook and cranny of this wine. Extremely silky and smooth in the mouth which produces a finish that reminded me of the horizon when you are looking out from the deck of a boat, just does not quit. — 11 years ago

Pleasant surprise. Great complexity, tons of flavor. Want to try again when I'm not in a big group. — 13 years ago

Magically old/dirty wine that is such an anomaly for where it comes, it's definitely such a unique terroir, a jewel in the midst of its surroundings... — 10 years ago

You almost need a sixties sound track when sipping. Nice, earthy smell and taste, like Woodstock. — 10 years ago

Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1975

Neck fill and cork tight and sweet sounding when you pull it. You almost can tell if a bottle will be good by how the cork comes out. Juicy still with dark cranberry notes, pure of fruit and melted tannins and acid backbone. Love it as not sure how these 75's would have aged. — 10 years ago

Silver Oak

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

I wasn't sure what to expect from this 15+year old wine, but either this vintage or aging made it to my liking. It was a cab that had softened the typical in your face experience from younger cabs. A good example of what might happen to me when I age :). The qualities of oak and fruit, but never too distinct to overwhelm the palate with any one flavor. — 11 years ago

Bonneau du Martray

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2009

Young Bonneau du Martray; just linear, oak though a big presence is layered, nose awfully restrained and fruit basically hidden until it evolves some more; try in a decade maybe two; so slight but so tight; acid tucked behind the wood too; an evolution to happen; great Corton; an even better site when I drove past this vineyard in May this year; #drinkFrance #drinkburgundy #côtedor #cortoncharlemagne #corton #bonneaudumartray #grandcru #domaine #2009 #uncorkedandcultivated #wineandfoodtours #France2016 — 11 years ago

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Artemis Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

First off. You have heard about decanting.... This is a great example. Open and it tastes flat, give it time to breath and the flavors come out. The nose has a nice oak, smokey texture. Taste has a predominant black cherry flavor with nice ripe fruit flavors. Oak remains throughout the taste from start to finish with american oak flavors. An almost cigar smokiness hits immediately with a slight spice....not sure where to compare this to because it's not like a Zinfandel pepper, but more like an allspice. The overall feel is medium bodied with rich cherry flavors and well balanced for a smooth feel. This is a great introduction to Stags Leap without spending $150. — 11 years ago

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1994

When drunk side by side with the 2001 Lafite Rothschild this seemed a little past due. The nose is incredible: cigar box, cedar and leather are predominant. The fruit is secondary but appeared more after a half hour. — 10 years ago

Krug

Grande Cuvée Brut Champagne Blend

My love for Krug knows no bounds. Bready, yeasty notes jump out of the glass towards you but quickly soften into those of honey butter. Ginger and spice notes. Lees driven but well integrated with medium high acid. This champagne is so complex that it's almost impossible to truly detect where one note of flavor ends and the other begins. — 11 years ago

Merry Edwards

Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2010

Amazing what you find when you reorganize your wine storage. Was this the year it won Best SB from WS? 14.1 ABV! Loved this, not the overly sweet and fruity SB I seem to come across more often. But, then, it is Merry Edwards....... — 11 years ago
