Krug

Vintage Brut Champagne Blend 2008

Delectable Wine
9.7

The 2008 Vintage is an infant. Tightly wound and vibrant, the 2008 still needs time. Today, bright acids dominate. I wouldn't dream of touching this anytime soon, as the 2008 remains embryonic, although from time to time the barest hints of signature Krug notes peek out from the wine's structure. Vibrant saline notes and sculpted fruit are the signatures of a cold, late-ripening year that produced classically austere Champagnes. Disgorged: Autumn 2019. Krug ID: 419044. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2013 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a pronounced, minty bouquet with plenty of fruit. However, it lacks the bandwidth of a truly great Musigny from de Vogüé. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, briny with black olives infusing the black fruits, linear and structured toward the finish. Fine, but very serious. Like an old schoolmate who you've never heard crack a joke. (Neal Martin, Vinous, October 2023)

Olga Raffault

Chinon Cabernet Franc Rosé 2022

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2022 Rosé is distinctly savory, nearly smoky, with a blend of bouquet garni, crushed peaches and wet stone. A tinge of minerality up front enhances its tart orchard fruits, adding a crisp, almost crunchy sensation as sour citrus punctuates the close. It tapers off with a spicy and wonderfully fresh saline tension, leaving just a subtle trace of licorice to fade. (Eric Guido, Vinous, June 2023) — 2 years ago

Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2012 Montrose has a taut and focused bouquet with crisp blackberry, tobacco and light earthy scents on the nose. Fine vigour and class evident here. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a nicely proportioned and focused finish. This is a solid, almost swarthy Montrose, though it is surpassed by more recent vintages. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Tensley

Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah 2020

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2020 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is a dense, potent wine. The purity of the fruit is remarkable. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2020 is still incredibly primary. Inky red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and rose petal open with a bit of coaxing. All this needs is time and a bit more polish. As always, the Colson Canyon Syrah is one of the most distinctive wines in Joey Tensley's range. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2022)

Dom Pérignon

Brut Champagne Blend 2008

Delectable Wine
9.8

The 2008 Dom Pérignon is a huge, powerful Champagne and also clearly one of the wines of the vintage. This is one of the most reticent bottles I have tasted. So much so that I am thinking about holding off opening any more bottles! The 2008 has always offered a striking interplay of fruit and structure. Today, the richness of the fruit is especially evident. Readers who own the 2008 should be thrilled, but patience is a must. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2021)

Château Ausone

Saint Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2014 Ausone has retained that purity, pastille-like red berry fruit on the nose, with touches of clove and bay leaf, perhaps almost Burgundian in terms of its allure. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, pliant tannins that manifest its velvety texture. This might be the most seductive of any 2014 Bordeaux, fanning out beautifully towards the almost citrus-fresh finish. Gorgeous. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On tasting. Château Palmer

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1970

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 1970 Palmer is a vintage that I have tasted on several occasions, although recently, I have encountered some variation, including a rather rum example in 2015. The most recent example has an attractive tobacco-infused nose, perhaps more akin to a Saint-Julien than a Margaux. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm backbone, a slight dryness around the edges and fine salinity with lightly-spiced cedar and tobacco notes on the finish. This is a solid 1970 Margaux, though I would not keep it long-term. (Neal Martin, Vinous, August 2023)

Prapò Barolo Nebbiolo 2018

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2018 Barolo Prapò is a dark, dense wine. Red cherry, plum, tobacco, cedar, spice, smoke, cured meats and menthol add do an impression of brooding intensity. The Prapò has more body and overall depth than the Serralunga Barolo, but also quite a bit more tannin. I have a slight preference for the Serralunga bottling in this vintage. Château Angélus

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2012 Angélus has a fragrant bouquet: a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle, crushed stone and light wilted flower scents. Very pretty. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation and good acidity, quite sappy with modest depth. Fairly structured with a dash of white pepper and peppermint on the finish. This Angélus has tons of personality and is drinking well now. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Azienda Agricola Ronchi

Barbaresco 2017

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2017 Barbaresco Ronchi is darker, richer and more potent than the straight bottling, but ultimately the two wines aren't as different as they have been or should be. I imagine at least some of that is attributable to the vintage. Black cherry, smoke, tobacco, licorice and leather all meld together nicely. The heat of the vintage is a bit more evident here, but is also nicely balanced. The 2017 finishes with notable substance and power. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2022)

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Delectable Wine
10

The 2005 Latour was mind-blowingly profound in two recent tastings for this report. Deep and sensual to the core, the 2005 is utterly captivating. All the elements are so seamlessly put together. Graphite, crème de cassis, licorice, dark spice and lavender infuse the 2005 with so much energy. More than anything else, though, the 2005 is a Latour of texture and resonance. Even after several hours, the 2005 is fresh and full of energy. Wines like this are just life affirming. That's about all I can really say. Tasted two times. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, April 2021)

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2008

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2008 Cheval Blanc is one of the go-to wines of the vintage. Now at 15 years old, it has retained the energy and focus it displayed from the outset: black fruit, crushed stone, wilted violet petals and touches of forest floor cohere wonderfully in the glass. The Cabernet here is more expressive. The palate has a slight chewiness on the entry, but it "relaxes" in the glass. It shows off its delicate lattice of tannins and perhaps a bit more backbone than I have observed on previous bottles. It's very intense on the finish where, as before, the Cabernet Franc takes charge. Superb. Keep it another three to four years if you can. Tasted at the Lia's Wings/book dinner at Medlar restaurant. Cantina Bartolo Mascarello

Barolo Nebbiolo 2004

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2004 Barolo (magnum) is soft and silky, but it is also more forward than I expect, or want, to be honest. Dried flowers, leather, spice, game and dark-fleshed fruit fill out the layers. Vertical tastings serve, among other things, to shine a bright light on a single wine over many vintages. In this context, the 2004 does not live up to my original enthusiasm. Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2004

Delectable Wine
8.9

The 2004 Léoville-Poyferré has a light and airy bouquet with blackberry, antique bureau, forest floor and light fungal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins, a little austere but balanced, though I notice some attenuation and bitterness towards the finish. So-so for this estate. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2022)

Brewer-Clifton

Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2020

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2020 Chardonnay (Sta. Rita Hills) is a terrific appellation-level wine. Hints of pear, mint, lemon peel and white flowers all grace this expressive, sculpted Chardonnay from Brewer-Clifton. My only quibble is a slightly aggressive edginess that hopefully will soften over time. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2022)

Château Climens

Barsac 1er Cru Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2011

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2011 Climens has a fresh, lifted, mineral-driven bouquet which has closed down a little. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh. A lively, tensile finish, with hints of stem ginger thatlinger on the aftertaste. This is drinking beautifully. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022. Georges Laval

Brut Nature Cumières 1er Cru Champagne Blend

Laval was my gateway drug to grower champagne and Cumieres never lets me down. An extraordinary week (became an aunt !!!, officially completed my WSET Diploma) called for celebration, i heeded the call with Laval. Unbelievably aromatic (baked apple, fresh apple, toast, brioche and all the lovely things). Decadent, so rich and vinous—you’d almost forget it was brut nature. — 4 years ago
