the 14 is odd and different than her other vintages but is changing in compelling and surprising ways - like a child that goes down strange and meandering paths only to travel themselves to a place where they flourish and become the genius that they were destined to be — 9 years ago

Grand Rêve Vintners / Force Majeure

Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Collaboration Series VI Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

Greg Ballington
9.1

Third red of the evening. Deep garnet red. Needs time, slight portiness and whiskey on the nose. Dark fruits and figs too. Tasted blind but reminded us straight away of the 2009 Force Majeure IV we had earlier last year. Moderate tannins (6/10) and full bodied. A little cherry liquor and dark cocoa on the palate. Long finish and the nose is a bit off-putting. This needs time to mellow out. — 10 years ago

Cherry Pie Wines

Stanly Ranch Pinot Noir 2012

Ryan Carey
9.2

Finally trying Cherry Pie (from Hundred Acre). 3 different single vineyard Pinots from 2012. Stanly Ranch is dynamite (and a vineyard to keep an eye on). Reminiscent of Kosta Browne. Next up is Rodgers Creek. Darker fruit. Less explosive, but a nice wine. Third up is Carinalli. Way lighter, though some spice to it. It's fine, but doesn't hold a candle to the other two. Château Kirwan

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

Clocking in at only 13% abv, this third growth vintage 2003 is an absolute stunner. Suave and sophisticated, abundant fruit, nice acid to balance, minerality, well integrated tannins and long finish! For maximum enjoyment decant 1 hour or more before imbibing. And yes it has amazing aging ability, this wine is still clearly a youngster, full of youthful ambitions! — 13 years ago

Third go around with this bad boy, and looks like it’s hitting its stride - ripe dark red fruits with leather and spice, some minerality - best in show single vineyard Nero D’avola from legendary hands of Salvo Foti. — 9 years ago

A wonderful wine. Slightly earthy and a strong cherry flavour.

Napa Valley Red Blend 2006

Drank in pairs, this one with the 05. One of the crowd pleasers I had it at third best. Darker fruits, some sweetness, the cab franc comes through, fuller than the 05. — 10 years ago

Château Palmer

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1961

From and old bottle with a medium shoulder level and a fully branded cork that had the last third of it crumble a bit. Opaque in the glass but still quite ruby in color with reddish amber rims. Nose of small blackberries, spice, cedar wood, charcoal, and soil. Unbelievably rich and fruity in the mouth. Tannins completely integrated, leaving you with a mouth of silky fruit. The perfume of this wine is amazing. One of the best Bordeaux experiences of all time for me. Maybe the 61 Latour beats it but I'm splitting hairs at that point. Smoke em if you got em. — 10 years ago

Had three bottles at dinner tonight with a group of friends. First bottle good, but tannic, perfumed, spicy. Second bottle has the same backbone but lots of dark fruits. Third bottle was near perfect blend of the first two. Had with Chateaubriand. — 11 years ago

Boulevard Brewing Company

Love Child No. 5 Sour Ale

Oceanic agar suspends a muted, pickled peach and matches with fruit bat guano, pine chips, coffee, cardamom and white pepper aromas. Underripe bing cherries, toasty apricot, clove, scorched lemon, blood orange, underripe tangerine, grapefruit and kumquat: a particularly sour, yellow one. Decidedly different than the one I had last year; better perhaps! #boulevardbrewing #sourale #sourbeer #sourbeers #lovechild #numberfive #dankbeer — 9 years ago

Witchery Wine

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Greg Ballington
9.1

Third of the blind tasting for Father's Day weekend.

Dark purplish ruby red. Dark fruits on the nose with notes of forest floor and some aged characteristics of mushrooms. Solid acidity and heavy tannins (7/10). Rich palate on the attack with black fruits. Opened up to some anise, a touch aged, earthiness and some minerality. Medium plus body and long finish. Drink till 2028. (91+)

Will leave our last bottle for a few years. Hopefully this will improve with age.

Ætneus Etna Rosso Nerello Blend 2008

The dimensions of this wine are huge, and I don't mean alcohol, acidity, or tannin, though it has fair bit of all three. There's a depth or a third dimension that only wines from special places have. The fruit is bright and the color pale, but the wine is dark in character. It's the character that Etna has - that rocky, ashy, old balsamic, dusky mountain herb, intense etnosity. — 11 years ago

Krug

Grande Cuvée Brut Champagne Blend

Grande Cuvée NV. Oldest wine 1988. Amazing. Blend works especially well here. Rich and generous. Concentrated, but precise and long. Citrus and stone fruit - fresh. Touch of coffee notes that adds complexity and complexity to the mid palate. NB: 4,000 kg Marc translates to 2,050 for 1st Taille. 450 litres for 2nd and 3rd tail is sold off to third parties - never used for Krug. — 11 years ago
