Rhys Vineyards

Alesia Chileno Valley Syrah 2004

We were so fortunate to have Jeff Brinkman, Rhys’ winemaker for the past 15 years, join our tasting of nine Rhys Syrahs from 2003 - 2013. Stew, smoke, meat, classic bret. I loved it, others not so much. — 5 years ago

Rhys Vineyards

San Mateo County Pinot Noir 2015

Another last of its kind wine as the San Mateo moved to Alesia label after this vintage. This young blend is really singing right now with bright red fruit and cedar spice and well balanced acidity. A candidate for short term aging, but the freshness of the fruit really shines now. — 7 years ago

Alesia Fairview Ranch Syrah 2006

Sadly 2015 is the last of these by Rhys - and sadder still, they all sold out in the blink of an eye.

Smooth, berry, strawberry, dried chery, lead pencil, slight rock, minimum tannin. 14.25 ABV. Yeah, I've always pretty much loved these Alesa's. 2006.

Alder Springs Vineyard Chardonnay 2013

Lemon color. Green apple, lemon, a bit of tropical fruit and slight yeast. Mellower than the Alpine, with laser sharp acidity. Long finish. Great value from Rhys. Wish I bought more. Very nice white in the Old World style. — 10 years ago

Rivers-Marie

Bearwallow Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

Moderate reddish purple in the glass. Quite young and tightly knit at this point showing predominantly barrel notes with caramel and dusty cedar but with aeration also wild berries and hints of mint. The red toned fruit is prominent on the palate with surprisingly muscular tannins, balanced acidity, 14.2% alcohol, and good length. This is River-Marie’s first vintage sourced from Rhys’ estate Bearwallow vineyard in the “deep end” of Anderson Valley. The bottling shows promise but would undoubtedly benefit from time in the cellar to unwind. $68. — 8 years ago

Domaine Dujac

Chambolle-Musigny Pinot Noir 2010

Wide open, a bit funky but almost lush, with sweet fruit and spice. Firm tannins on a supple frame. Don't imagine this closing down. This is starkly similar to a number of good Cali/Oregon PN's. Could easily be Peay or Rhys. — 9 years ago

Elegant, but way too young. The aromatics are exquisite. Rhys/Alesia are Pinot Noir savants. This is a whole cluster masterpiece. — 11 years ago

Contino Single Vineyard Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2015

Pop and pour. I initially opened a Rhys PN to pair with our lentil stew, but that just wasn't dense enough. This btl was fantastic. On the nose: soft mulberry, crushed sweet tomato, loads of raspberry, other soft herbal notes...nice complexity. On the palate: excellent acidity and density, but so weightless at the same time: black cherry and pomegranate, and then a nice finely grained tannic finish. Fantastic. — 5 years ago

Red fruit with a little spice, at the moment it shows a little diluted in the middle. I'm not sure whether it is in a dumb stage or fading. Not bad but not up to the competition. — 9 years ago
