Paper Planes

Brewer-Clifton

3-D Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2018

Fantastic chardonnay from Greg Brewer that is only going to get better and better with more time in the bottle. A perfect match for a spectacular day in Eagle Harbor on Lake Superior…and even better to celebrate Vanessa’s paper being accepted for publication today! 🥳 — 5 years ago

@Jim McCusker @Vanessa McCaffrey What a beautiful day. congratulations on your paper being excepted for publication. What an enjoyable bottle of wine. That wine has a long runway in front of it. Will taste even better in a year. Cheers and congratulations again.

Vigneto Saetti

Rosso Viola Lambrusco 2016

This incredibly unique semi-carbonated Lambrusco is all about Red Delicious apples. Pretty crimson murky red with a tinge of copper on the brim. It’s completely dry with a bitter note reminiscent of apple skin. Tart cranberries and spiced cherry flavors formulate into a Dr. Pepper and nutmeg elixir. So unusual and so perfect for this time of year.

And more surprises - an odd cone shaped knobless Champagne cork that requires a corkscrew. It comes wrapped in a personal paper note from the winemaker about wine quality.

Domaine Guiberteau

Saumur Chenin Blanc 2015

Needs a good breathe. After an hour of carafe starts showing orchard fruit blossom, savory honeycomb, wax paper, crunchy pear and pollen. Precise and lean attack. Long finish with wet steal, wet wool, and finishes nutty. Carrot juice and sweet potato on the early finish. Was really disappointed upon opening. Glad I gave it some time to open up. — 8 years ago

Bourgogne Pinot Noir

Dusty creek basin, dried raspberries, cranberries and rainier cherry contrast with sliced red plum, crepe paper, sunflower petal. Incredible depth and texture, with stony plum, dried black cherry, fig skin, powdery raspberry, dried violets, and a baked, black olive and red saffron aura. This is a fine burgundy, and at a price that makes you smile! — 9 years ago

The nose reveals, lemon curd, lime, green apple, overripe pineapple, a salted caramel, beautiful soft minerals, chalk power and yellow flowers, lilies, spring flowers with greens.

The body is full and round. Honeysuckle, fruit blossoms, lemon curd, lime, green apple, overripe pineapple, a salted caramel, beautiful soft minerals, chalk power and yellow flowers, lilies, spring flowers with greens. The acidity is round. The lush finish thick, rich and well polished.

Vigna d'Alfiero Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese 2008

Intense aroma, almost stings my nose! Aromas and flavors of charcoal, prune, lead, carbon paper, smoke, vanilla, and leather. Acid is med + still for this vintage, which is 10 years old right now. Tannins are suave yet the texture still has a nice hold. Pairing well with sheep’s milk cheese and wild hare paté! — 7 years ago

Superior No. 12 Brand 90 Proof Tennessee Sour Mash Whisky

There's a lot to like about this whisky. There's also quite a lot not to like. The intense vanilla, caramel, mocha flavors are delicious and sustain beautifully. However, there isn't the elegance or smoothness of a great whisky. Better than most large production options at a similar price point and a worthy addition to the home bar.

Thanks Trixie! There's a major Thornton Dial exhibition opening at the Met in NYC this spring. I'll be going for sure and might upgrade my whisky for that outing. 🥃

Mémoire de Vignes Champagne Pinot Noir 2011

9.6

Patrick Arnould passed over 2009 & 2010, but decided to make this 2011- a strange decision on paper. This all old-vine Pinot blanc de noir has it where it counts- in the bottle. Only 60 bottles for the USA, now 59. This seems lighter than past vintages, but still has that Nutella like hazelnut character that screams Verzenay. I will wait a year or two to have my next bottle for sure... But this long wine sure did go down easy last night! — 8 years ago

Demarie

Nebbiolo d'Alba Nebbiolo

Raspberry, dried blackberry and cedar form a distinct potpourri when considered with the dried rose petal and orange bitters. There is a fleeting fruitiness that approaches strawberries dropped into a coniferous fire. Lovely, if firm tannins support a whale of a wine. Amazing depth with Roobios tea leafs, tobacco, graphite, bay leaf, bing cherry, dried black cherry and black currants on carbon paper and campfire ash, driven deep into a charred wormwood and dusty schist. This is an incredible Nebbiolo that over-delivers in every sense! #piedmontesewines #nebbiolo #nebbiololover #nebbiololife #nebbiolodalba #alba #Demarie #piedmont #babybarolo #italianred #Italianwine — 8 years ago
