The 2019 Chablis Butteaux Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has a tightly-wound, backward, smoke-tinged bouquet opening with light orange blossom, nougat and wild peachy scents that begin to take over. The palate is well-balanced with a smooth opening, harmonious with well-judged acidity, and lightly spiced with pleasing coherence toward the finish that lingers in the mouth. Nuanced and intellectual, this is a very well-crafted Chablis that appears to have seriously "kicked on" since tasting it a couple of years ago. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru doesn't possess the delineation and panache of Tollot-Beaut's on the nose at first, though it coheres nicely with aeration. Peach skin, linseed and wilted white flowers eventually come through. The palate is well-balanced with a viscous entry, a little more honeyed in style than previous wines in this flight of Corton-Charlemagne, though it deserves applause for the precision and detail on the finish. It needs a little more time in the bottle compared to others because there is a lot of coconut-ty new oak. My score is based on this being assimilated with bottle age. smoke. Pulverized slate.laser minerals.
P: bright acidity. Huge minerals. Hints of lemon.
Needs an hour decant.
Then petrified lemon and lemon flower pulverized to a pure, filigreed powder. Gorgeous. Almost a wee bit of elegant savoriness on the finish.

The 2020 Chambertin Grand Cru is clean and precise on the nose, with raspberry and wild strawberry, crushed stone and discreet sous-bois scents. This, again, unfolds wonderfully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle but insistent grip. It is more saline than Launay Horiot's Chambertin, with fine structure and a hint of spice towards the finish that has just a touch of piquancy. Bravo - this is a Chambertin from the top drawer. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, October 2024)
