Surprisingly good...to the point that it would hard to taste the “Virginia” in this, let alone the ‘Loudoun’! As Pete referenced, this is mostly Tannat (and Doug has a good track record with the Tannic-tempter”). The taste is a mashup of NorCal wild Zin & Petite Sirah w/12.5% Merlot ;) That the brown-bag taste. The “it’s from Virginia“ taste indicators was a flat Cheerwine cola mojo. Dark berry fruit acid grabs you right away...a delicate dance of coffee and briar compote escort a sturdy structure mid-palate off the stage. The Virginia Tannat is woven into the blend such that it isn’t articulate or distinguished. Nevertheless, this was punchy mid week red that had brownbag surprise written all over it! — 6 years ago

While yummy it seems to be lacking precision and blind could easily pass for Chilean Cab or a Syrah. Blue flowers and ripe blackberry fruit. Ultra ripe smooth tannins. It’s an enjoyable wine, don’t get me wrong, but it lacks mojo — 7 years ago

Great nose on opening, but definitely lost its mojo after about 40 minutes... not much acidity and really flattened out. Not sure if it was the vintage or bottle, but it was definitely unusual. At Roscioli in Rome a few nights ago. — 9 years ago

After my bar-setting 2016 experience, this “classic” vintage offering didn’t disappoint. While it wasn’t the shooting star that ‘16 elevated to, the ‘12 had all the varietal mojo but with a little less juiciness going on. Solid structure and balance - that’s the hallmark here. Yes, 4 yrs of additional bottle aging to consider. I’m not trying to find a winner, rather I was delighted by consistency! What I was surprised to find: DAY 2 😳 —-> a wonderful rounding and depth evolved. So, I will be picking up another since my source has several. My pond is a secret ;) — 7 years ago

#stemilion #grandcruclassé Deep ruby, needed to open to decant, tight at beginning, then dark jammy cherries and plums, seems pure #Merlot, dark chocolate and hint of pepper. Very little tertiary notes, a little savoury sweet marinated meat. Dry, soft entry, medium acidity, pronounced silky smooth tannins, high alcohol. Full bodied and medium+ flavor intensity. Very good. I feel like this wine is overtly alcoholic and lacking intensity of aromas and flavors. There's no precision, no standout complexity or character because it's 14.5 alcohol and it seems like it could use a little mojo or funk. Very sleek very sexy, whatevers, but I'm digging the slightly green and funky Lalande that I'm tasting side by side that's half the price. — 8 years ago
