Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

First Time Trying "Calon Segur" 1995 – Tasting Notes

Background:
- Wine:Château Calon-Ségur 1995 (Third Growth, Saint-Estèphe)
- Blend:Bordeaux Blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot)

Tasting Notes
Appearance
- Color:Ruby-red with a "pigeon blood" hue, still vibrant for its age.

Nose (Aroma)
- Initially:Tight and powerful upon opening, dominated by cedar, oak, and smoky notes, with subtle earthy undertones. Fruit and floral aromas were restrained.
- After 30 mins of decanting:Began to open up—blackcurrant, raspberry, and a savory, almost "natural wine" minerality emerged.
- After 1 hour:Evolved further with liquorice, dark chocolate, and a touch of tobacco.

Palate (Taste)
- Tannins: Softened nicely but still present (typical of aged Bordeaux).
- Acidity:Noticeably high, giving freshness but slightly dominant early on.
- Flavor Profile:Balanced but not overly complex—black fruits, earthy notes, and oak spices in harmony.

Structure & Finish
- Body:Medium-full, elegant but not heavy.
- Finish:Moderate length, ending with lingering cedar and dark fruit.

Impressions & Comparisons
- Balance:Very well-integrated—no single element overpowers (aroma, flavor, acidity all upper-medium tier).
- Lacking Distinction? In a blind tasting of Bordeaux, this might blend in—no standout "wow" factor(e.g., missing the rose petal florality sometimes associated with "Calon’s romantic charm").

Château Meyney

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Vintage 2019 | 375 ml | 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot | one hour in decanter | Cedar and pure chocolate, that mineral strictness that is typical for Saint Estephe, interesting smell, strict taste with powerfull tannins. Paired with rumpsteak and zucchini tarts. Lots of potential. — 9 months ago

Plaimont

Piémont Pyrénéen Saint Mont Gros Manseng Blend 2019

The nose does not present much. A slight hint of apricot but you really have to dig deep to search it out. The pallet on the other hand is very pronounced. Slightly dry and acidic the fruit is lemon and apricot with a hint of straw. The finish of apricot lingers. A bargain at 15.98 from Wine Exchange. — a year ago

Château Beychevelle

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Nice color of dark ruby with a reddish rim.

Fruity nose of black currants, plums, cooked cherries, oak, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, spices, earth and black tea.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black currants, black plums, blackberries, coffee, herbs, chocolates, light oak, licorice, spices, light earth, tobacco leaf and black pepper.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a delicious Merlot based blend from Saint Julien. Elegant and spicy. Fruit forward and chocolatey.

I've had a few vintages of this wine and it is very consistent and always delicious, especially with age.

This 7 year old 4th growth Bordeaux is starting to drink beautifully now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years.

Well balanced, complex and interesting. Rich and inviting.

Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food.

A blend of 50% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Aged in (60% new) French Oak barrels for 18 months.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$150.

9.5

Unreal nose for one of the best wines in all of NSG. Gorgeous black cherry fruit that is so clear and vivid. A hint of black plum but more black plum skins. Wild mint, desiccated tree bark, wild flowers and mega forest floor. Just stunning. 9.6 or 9.7 nose. Rich and deep with awesome purity and freshness. Really lush and succulent with terrific tiny berry fruit intensity. Superb concentration, structure and juiciness. Such a baby but not inaccessible. Really long finish and so compact. Glorious and can’t wait to see what the evening brings for this wine. This did get riper, “soupier” and plummier. Showed its “20” bones. Still fresh and deep but man 20 is all plum it seems like at some estates. — 5 months ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Les Pagodes de Cos Saint-Estéphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

A 2nd respected wine label of Cos D’Estournel (a 2nd Growth of the 1855 Grand Cru Classification) with a blend of Cab Sauv at 44%, Merlot at 46,2%, Cab Franc at 5,8% and Petit Verdot at 4% brings out an opulent, intense, deep, yet refined and properly-balanced red. The V’15 is perfectly poised, seductive, and extremely enjoyable. Eruptive fruity, with powerful aromatics in baked red fruits. The level of ripeness and raisins in notably persistent. Pagodes V’15 seats among my top favorites from Saint-Estèphe sub-appellation that will never disappoints and/or falls short of expectations. Cheers! — 7 months ago

Château Lilian Ladouys

Saint Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

The vines of Lilian-Ladouys are found a stone's throw from the Graves of Cos d'Estournel and the Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Deep Ruby red color, with inky tones, blend of mostly Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, aged in French oak for 15 months, aromas of black and blue fruit, smoky notes and soft spice. On the palate flavors of blackberry and plum with toasty oak flavors, full body with fine tannins, long finish ending with earthy menthol mineral character. — a year ago

Château Moulin Riche

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. Previously a label for the second wine of Château Léoville-Poyferré, but a separate estate since the 2009 vintage. Moulin Riche is a 20 hectares vineyard in one block, planted with 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and an unusually high Petit Verdot percentage of 23%. This 2019 is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 11% Petit Verdot. It features an attractive nose with cassis, blackberry and violets. It is definitely made in the Léoville-Poyferré style (the sexiest of the 3 Léovilles) with its lush ripe fruit and perfectly ripe tannic backbone. It would be interesting to compare this to the second wine of Léoville-Poyferré. Should age well, but very attractive already. Abv. 14%. — 4 years ago

Domaine Vincent Paris

Les Côtes Saint-Joseph Syrah 2022

Funny how sometimes I’m guilty of thinking “ letting the Brett blow off” to taste the main event. Here the development in the glass is the main event, which includes quite a bit of funk when first opening up. That the evolution includes wild blackberries & cassis, & the funk adds to the overall impression of something feral getting tamed, is all part of the fun. Fine grained & can be drunk young, but curious how it would fare in 8-10 years ( imagine a much more smoothed out development & sweetness). — 3 months ago

Château Montrose

La Dame de Montrose Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

This is literally a 2nd Label from a 2nd Growth Grand Cru Classé with a vintage that seats among the great years of Château Montrose. The grapes were very good quality, and further strengthened Montrose’s ultra-precise plot selection, which at times involves multiple passes through a plot to attain optimum ripeness. Unequivocally, the 2nd selection of Château Montrose is marked by the terroir as well (Situated on a well-exposed gravelly land overlooking the Gironde)

The blend composition; Cab Sauv 55 %, Merlot 41 % Petit Verdot 4 % takes you to experience an intense deep red color, a powerful and expressive nose with complex aromas of black fruit, fine oak, a bit caramelized and a hint of pleasant smoky notes as well.

The entrance on the palate is full force and rich, the roundness and harmony are sensed by the mid-rage of the palate as well, the mouthfeel reveals very silky tannins, it provides a great length with some degree of red fruit ripeness on the finish.

This wine V.2015 is still cruising beautifully in its prime time and will continue like this for another 3-5 years with the same tasting profile, and the price point makes it even tastier! Cheers!
