Got into a northern Rhone last night. Dark purple. Youthful. Decanted for 2 hours to dissipate some of the heat from the alcohol. It opened up much better than the last bottle. It has a nice balance of peppery spice and blueberry/bramble. It also had some mint and a savoury hoisin side to it, although it notably lacked any hint of liquorice. I’m okay with that as that really isn’t my draw. It has a very well defined structure but tannins are not grippy; just pleasantly present. Medium plus acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannin. A perfect accompaniment to our night by the fire. Could easily last and suggest to most palates that they wait another 5-10+. Probably best with food. — 7 years ago
Oak on the nose. Creamy right up front, almost creme brûlée. Medium body. Tropical fruit,
banana and light oak finish with just enough crispness in the finish to draw you back for another sip. — 7 years ago
Paired this delicious wine, from our last trip to Sonoma County 2016, with spinach and ricotta ravolis. We've been letting it settle from it's move from NJ to IL and decided St Patrick's day Eve seemed like as good of an excuse as any to break it open. Worth the wait. Label say...in the winter, when you draw the wine, let there be in your heat a song for each cup... Well singing it's praises. Full-bodied and we'll rounded finish. Surprising Trader Joe's find this evening. Cork smelled heavily of TCA and fell apart magnificently while I was trying to open it but the wine seems untainted. Deep Ruby color. Aromatic- clove, leather, light prune note. Showing some oxidative character, well balanced nose appropriate of the age. Cherry cordial. Body is well balanced, favoring astringency. Mouth is supple, balanced by acid but very soft. Long draw, all luscious blue and purple fruit. Very impressive. — 8 years ago
Really nice rose, better on day 2! #texaswine — 5 years ago
The Sadie wines are treasures. Eben Sadie makes wine in the ways I’d make wine. Treinspoor is something unique. I’d be shocked if anyone could call the grape blind though it makes sense after you think about it. Tinta Barocca is usually made for Port and you can draw the link to prune, plumb, raisins, spruce, and oak. Bone dry, fleshy tannins. — 6 years ago
Outstanding red Texas blend. Dry, soft but rich and well balanced. Excellent with baked cod on tomato and garlic sauce. — 7 years ago
Very syrupy Sherry. Made from pressed raisens it has a very smooth finish and mouth feel. It is best served chilled to draw out the depth of the flavors. Good with rich desserts and bitter (high cocoa) chocolates. — 7 years ago
The fight was a draw on points but on QPR the judges voted on the Palmer 🥇
At £340 it has less life but better & a bigger thrill drinking today 🥊 a bit more masculine than Ch Margaux
🍷 Deep ruby w/ brick edge
👃 Perfumed red flower, burnt oak, musty cellar, dark berry fruits, cocoa Black Forest morello cherry gateaux, liquorice & herbs
👄 Med body of super smooth dark berry w/ rich mocha liquorice

Preparing for our adventure to Portugal Surdyks’ Recommendation:
(Douro) Portugal is a prolific wine country, best known for its sweet dessert wine - Port. World famous in its many styles, Port is sweet and fortified, prized for its rich flavors and lush texture. Portugal also has fabulous dry red wine. Dow’s “Vale do Bomfim” is made with the same grapes and sourced from the same historic Douro Valley that produces Dow’s great Ports. Portugal’s indigenous grapes – Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão – are names that should pique your interest and draw you to this imported discovery. Picked by hand and manually sorted with great care, the grapes are fermented in small vats. The resulting wine has complexity and style. Portugal’s Douro Valley has consistently good climate and growing conditions almost every year. The flavors are dynamic and the tannic structure is soft and silky. This is a really good wine for all occasions, with an affordable price and value.

Hipping is exotically fruity, with some leesy reduction at this juncture; Pettenthal is the oddball, aged in barrique to draw out citrus fruit and roundness from a tight, mineral wine; Orbel is the complete package, a tannic and racy white showing equal parts fruit, floral, and Roterhang minerality. An interesting common thread through these wines is a distinctive herbal/spice character, which reminded me of a funky Belgian witbier or tripel, presumably attributable to ambient yeast populations and soil expression. — 8 years ago

If you are new to red wine, this is a good introduction to reds. Its between a pinot noire and a cabernet, but the alcohol is very subtle for a red. — 7 years ago
Occasionally you come across an incredible wine at a price that makes your draw drop on the quality to price ratio 😎
La Croix St George’s has always delivered amazing value from Pomerol for me but today we found a 1990 at €90 & to say it blew us away is a complete understatement!!
We immediately bought the other 11, in the case we found lurking in a cellar in St Emilion, & drank this one with a Beef Steak in a local restaurant for lunch - it was simply superb 😍
Aromas to die for & full of complex fruits with age potential left 😉 Normally you’d pay €200-€500 for a wine like this!
I’ll do a detailed review on the next bottle as we just enjoyed this so much we didn’t take notes but this 1990 La Croix St Georges is a 98-99 pointer for us ..... & at €90 😍 Incredible 💥 A very understated wine 😎
Got to love St Emilion backstreet cellars 😉👍🍷

Slighter nose than I recall before. First sip whams home rich wood and fruit. Excellent draw back. No big pop but subtle age and green pepper. — 8 years ago
Great color. Nose presents wet orchard. Almost buttery first sip. Tart cherry cream draw. Full mouth coating. Incredible flavor that can stand up- but has a delicate sense. Odd combo. — 8 years ago

Aromas of dark black fruits - blackberry, plum, blueberry. Bold and big, with soft integrated tannins that draw you into the inner sanctum of the grape varietal. A tinge of age at the ends, but not in the fore front. Nice lovely finish lasting over 30 seconds before it breaks down. Definitely at its peak of performance. Paired well with the bolognese. Even better with the veal chop with figs, pluots, and watermelon radish. As Elizabeth says, this is a gorgeous wine. “It’s a grown up, but not old”. Or as I like to say, like a 40 year old classy lady wearing an evening gown and pearls - just stunning! — 5 years ago
