Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

I opened this 2012 Chateau Pontet-Canet last night and it was stellar. The Pontet-Canet is a 5th growth classification that hits way above that tier. The estate of Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac commune, across the road from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The grape variety is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. I describe this one as a restrained elegant beauty. @55Seventy — 3 years ago

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Honoring my marvelous father with a meal and wine he would have appreciated with gusto.  We wish he was here to share it with us, but are deeply grateful that his spiritual presence remains so strong in our hearts today and every day.  💕

This blend is predominantly (78%) Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot.  🍷 It hails from the Haut-Médoc region on the “left bank” of Bordeaux, 🇫🇷 more specifically, the Pauillac AOC.  Pauillac is a highly-regarded commune, with favorable growing conditions, known for producing some outstanding quality wines.  👌👌 This wine is no exception. 😆

🏰 Château Grad-Puy-Lacoste is a cru classé, ranked among, and a neighbor to, the region’s top estates.  It’s incredible to think the first vines planted on this property date back to the 1500s, making it one of the oldest properties in the region.

We decanted this wine for several hours, which helped it soften and release its layered aromatics.

👁 The color is deep garnet with notable tearing.

👃 On the nose it has medium(+) intensity and concentration of developing aromas.  The aromas include ripe black fruit such as cassis, black cherry, blackberry, and plum, as well as other non-fruit notes like black licorice, pencil shavings, and violet. It has secondary notes of clove, nutmeg, allspice, cedar, also tertiary notes of wet earth, tobacco, leather, meat, fig, and mushroom.

👄 This wine is dry and its flavors on the palate are consistent with the nose.
This wine has balance, complexity, a strong structure, with firm, grippy tannins, and a long elegant finish.  👏👏

Château Le Pin

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Ethereal, silky and marvelously poised, the 2011 Le Pin (WWB, 97) is sourced from an extremely small estate is located in the commune of Pomerol. It is amongst the world's most expensive red wines, as this was very graciously shared by my colleague Dr. Hong. I was most impressed by the opulent, pillowy texture of the wine, which is still quite primary now at the eight year mark. Elegant tannins line the massive core of dark fruits, all leading the breathtaking, near minute-long finish. This true heavyhitter really needs another ten years of bottle age to hit its stride and will provide drinking enjoyment past my lifetime. Drink 2025-2055- 97 — 6 years ago

Fratelli Revello

Langhe Nebbiolo 2015

Run by brothers Carlo and Lorenzo, located in Frazione Annunziata in commune of La Morra, hand harvested. Medium Garnet with intense aromas of red fruits, oak and earthy notes. On the developing palate flavors of sour cherry, currants, toasty smoky oak and earthy herbs. Generous acidity, full body with big fine tannins on long finish ending with earthy character. Very good now but will get better in the cellar. Tasting Sample. — 6 years ago

Jean et Sébastien Dauvissat

Saint-Pierre Chablis Chardonnay 2018

Lesser known Chablis bottling from the affordable (and over-performing) Dauvissat - entirely in steel so it’s just juice, lees, and terroir in the bottle. Read that - thugs is from 15- to 20-year-old vines planted in five different parcels: two next to premier cru Montmains, two near premier cru Montée de Tonnerre, and one in the commune of Préhy. — 3 years ago

Château Loumède

Premières Côtes de Blaye Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

1986 vintage. Château Loumède, Premières Côtes de Blaye. What a nice surprise! Merlot Noir 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 35% et Côt Rouge (Malbec) in the commune of Sainte-Luce. Opens up nicely after an hour with delicate aromas of tobacco and leather. A fresh and elegant light-weight with good length. A pleasure to drink. Abv. 12,5%. — 4 years ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

Romanée-Conti Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2016

The commune we have all been waiting for - Vosne Romanee. The first of 6 Grand Crus tasted blind. In 2 of the 3 previous tastings the first wine in this group has been the DRC RC and when I sampled the breathtaking quality of this wine I was thinking they have done it again. A couple of experts in the group felt the 2 DRC wines were at #1 and #4 This proved to be correct. My notes - Perfume of violets, pepper and Asian Spices. A perfect palate of both feminine charm and latent power ... unbelievable. The La Tache usually shows as more voluptuous in these tastings but not in 2016. I normally don’t have this much left in my glass after the wine has been identified so this was quite a luxury. Just wonderful. As Clive Coates MW said - the yardstick with which to judge all other Burgundies. It is easy to think with the 1000 year history, and the stone cross that there is something spiritual and other worldly about this wine. The consensus from all 12 tasters was that this was the best of the Vosne Romanee tasting and therefore of the whole 34 Grand Crus tasted. Only 440 dozen produced for the world. — 6 years ago

Château Haut-Beauséjour

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

St. Estèphe, literally a stone's throw from the more prestigious Paulliac region, while not topping its sister commune by any means certainly holds its own. Huge initial notes include cassis, black currant, and anise followed by some of the largest tannins I've tasted in a wine this young. Great wine from a lesser well-known commune. 💥 for 💵 — 8 years ago

Ca' La Bionda

Valpolicella Classico Corvina Blend 2020

Opens on the nose with the smell of lees, underneath are early summer red 🍒 and a touch of balsamic and a touch of wood- maybe slovanian oak?
Tart, nice balance, refreshing and very drinkable. I was nervous to order it because it was listed under the 'Natural' wine selection but turns out that it's only organic and not bottle of kombucha. Excited to see that I might be able to find this for under $25.
Paid $54 at Commune in Columbus.

Morellino di Scansano Sangiovese Blend 2016

€16 on the restaurant wine list for a Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah blend. At one of the nicest restaurant in San Quirico D’Orcia, a small commune in the Tuscan hills, but weren’t impressed with our food selections. Wine was pleasant but not a lot of depth. Served from their cabinet above the refrigerators, so we needed to cool it off a few degrees in an ice bucket. — 6 years ago

Domaine Charles Audoin

Marsannay Pinot Noir Rosé 2016

Somm David T
9.1

On the nose, perfumed, candied fruits of strawberries, watermelon, cherries & Rainer cherries. Ballpark chewing gum, soft, powdery chalkiness and pink rose petals. The mouthfeel is round, ripe and fresh. Fruits are; ripe strawberries, watermelon, cherries & Rainer cherries. Ballpark chewing gum, roses petals and really like the soft, delicate, powdery chalkiness and minerality. Acidity is round, soft and mouthwatering. The long finish is round, fresh and delicious. The 2016 yield was about 1/2 of normal. Photos of; the Marasanny vineyard being harvested, outside shot of the Domaine & their stainless tanks in the the cellar as well as Cyril. Producer history and notes...Domaine Charles Audoin lies in the village of Marsannay-la-Côte. Descended from a long line of wine growers passing down from father to son, Charles Audoin took over the family property in 1972 with his wife Marie-Françoise, an oenologist by training. Located within the commune of Marsannay-la-Côte. Domaine Charles Audoin began with only three hectares but the estate has grown to nearly 35 acres with a diversity of soils. After taking over his father’s five acres of vineyards, Charles Audoin and wife Marie-Françoise developed the estate through the restoration and the purchase of new lots. Their vines are over 45 years of age on average and have a south-eastern orientation. Cyril prefers lower yields and has less intensive extraction for softer and more elegant wines. Happy Bastille everyone!
