Cook Forest Wines

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2004

From magnum, the wine offers an explosion of black fruit with a lovely violet, black cherry and cassis foundation. There is a hint of bay leaf and emerging tertiary notes of leather, forest floor and cigar box. Cedar emerges on a long finish. Very elegant, silky Tannins and beautiful weight in the mouth. Truly elegant with a textbook balance of grit and earthy character. Gorgeous now and for another decade at least. — 3 years ago

Drunk w Christmas Eve dinner 2020 of roasted eye of round, porcini gravy, mash etc.
Medium plus ruby. Forest-y aromas of almond tinged cherry, violets. Wife claims noticable Am oak, but I don't really feel it here (bottle age?) Acidity is high. This feels like it could easily go another 20 years.

Bearwallow Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Yeah, I am a fan of Rhys. So much forest floor, and a ton of complexity. Tried over 3 days and different each day. Fruit is beautiful but muted (a good thing, imo, some California pinots can be too much) — 8 years ago

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1947

This has always been superior in magnum and this one only reinforced the impression. Still powerful, extracted and opulent. Intoxicating qualities aromatically; leafy forest floor, truffles, but also still, ripe black fruits and some gamey, smokehouse umami. A dreamy finish. I'll wait 10 more years before I open another... — 9 years ago

Château Musar

Unique / Bordeaux style wine. Needs time to open and despite the age, would improve with decanting this wine. Old world nose, well balanced on mid palate with forest notes and wild berries. Medium finish — 10 years ago

Pop and pour. On the nose: sweet vanilla and apple, a touch of mint. On the palate: good acidity, good density, cool mineral notes, sweet apple, a touch of tangerine and some spicy pepper on the finish. Solid. — 5 years ago

Les Picasses Chinon Cabernet Franc 1989

Blackberries, dried plums, cassis, kirsch, clay, white pepper, forest floor, soy sauce, cigar box, sun dried tomatoes, iron, dried tarragon, pottery soil. Rounded acidity, minimal smooth velvet tannin balance, satin texture, super long earthy, peppery, smoky finish. Highly aromatic, fresh acidity, polished structure, mature notes balanced with fruit. This took nearly 2 hours decanted to fully reveal itself. Stunning! — 8 years ago

Super fun wine to get us ready for the Bordeaux Masters Class this afternoon.

Medium garnet core with bricking in the edges. Layered nose with some definite bret, not off putting at all. Notes of barnyard, leather and dried red cherries. Well integrated and balanced. Moderate tannins (6/10) and medium bodied. Very rustic on the palate with some dried red cherries, forest floor and cedar. Long finish. Enough finesse to go another year or two but why wait, drinking well right now. Drink till 2019.

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2008

The famed #lopezdeheredia - Their 2008 release year matched the year we got married so we ordered this at a nice restaurant on our 13th anniversary. I asked the sommelier to cool it in an ice bucket a bit and so it took some time to open up in the glass. One of the best old school #rioja - subtle dark fruit, forest floor and distinct mushroom and truffle aromas on the nose. The biggest surprise for me on the palate was the incredible freshness and bracing acidity. Forest floor, leather and dark fruit as the backup chorus. This is still such a young wine. Delicious and versatile pairing wine - worked so well with a brined chicken breast with a puff pastry side stuffed with morel mushroom and lobster. — 4 years ago

Château Lafon-Rochet

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2002

Since this is the last Friday of the year, my Cabernet fix is going to be a little different this time.

Dark ruby in color with a short brick /orange rim.

Earthy nose of blueberries, blackberries, black currants, earth, wood, light vanilla, tobacco, peppercorn, espresso, forest floor, leather, pencil lead, light barnyard, licorice, light vanilla, bell pepper and vegetables.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and nice legs.

Dry and earthy on the palate with blueberries, cherries, oak, licorice, cloves, earth, wet leaves, vegetables, herbs, beef jerky, spices, dark coffee, pencil lead, green pepper, black tea and peppercorn.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

What a wonderful Cabernet based red from Saint Estephe. Nicely balanced and very complex with a great mouthfeel. Earthy and still young, but drinking very nicely now.

Not a great vintage, but so enjoyable by itself or with food. The nose is so complex, that it's so nice just to sniff on.

Needs 3 hours to open up properly and show some tannins.

I paired it with cheeses and light appetizers.

13% alcohol by volume.
