Closed down, bracing acidity and tough as nails straight out the bottle.
After being open for 24 hours this is a different and slightly more welcoming wine showing better true varietal character.
Despite the slender body (12.8% ABV) I wouldn’t be surprised if this really will be singing in 3+ years.

When a Cali Syrah clocks in at 12.9%, I get a little nervous that I’m about to drink a statement and not a wine. My nervousness was unfounded. Nose is bright, with sniff-able acids, but lots of other stuff too: green olive, tiny red berries, crushed rock powder, dry-cured salami. Soft and flavorful, the interplay of low-toned savory flavors and zingy acids does a treble/bass thing on the palate. Finish is pretty long. Nice wine! — 5 years ago

Hitting its stride since LBT. Unwound and has fleshed out just a touch. Cracked pepper, hung meat, woodsmoke, bay leaf, wild berries, crushed cherry. Mineral laden throughout the palate. Fresh and just fun to drink with its very agreeable ABV. I love these wines upon release for how high-toned they are, but some recent bottles at the 5 year mark have really got me interested in how harmonious they get with a little bottle age. — 7 years ago

Black cherry compote, graphite, toffee & earthy spice notes. Something i can’t put my finger in that’s inbetween mint or eucalyptus clippings that were picked from the garden where you can still smell the soil. fine-grained tannins, heady acidity, and apologetically full-bodied. It’s dark. Black-purple. Slightly edged in red. Nose is heady. Stewed fruits and dark unsweetened chocolate. Moss. Wet moss in there too. And some herbal extract. Not sure which. Flavor is rich. Slightly ‘sweet’ or fruity. Dark, ripe stone fruits. Plenty of acid cuts through though. Not stain the teeth and dry the tongue tannic as some Petite Sirah tends towards. There’s a smokey, savory element in there too. This is great. A big red, but one with elegance and style.
