This was my contribution. As I have really gotten in to Aussie wines the last year or two, I’ve always wanted to try this wine (of any vintage), and couldn’t believe my luck when a local acquaintance who is wanting to downsize his cellar offered me two bottles at an amazing price. Upon opening, I was hit with smoked brisket, touch of bacon fat, and ripe blackberries. Not quite gamey or funky, but definitely savory in style. As it opened, the meat/savory notes came and went ever so often, allowing purity of the blackberries, boysenberries, and black cherries to shine. Charcoal smoke with baked fig arrive at the finish. A complex, delicious wine, and right up my alley for the style of wine I enjoy. @David T , you were correct in thinking I’d love this! — 6 years ago
Big, rich full bodied. Everything one loves about Aussie Shiraz — 8 years ago
Clear rich Crimson in colour. Whiff of wood varnish which blew off. Spicy - not as much pepper as usual. Cherries and supple savoury tannins. Medium bodied. One of my favourite Aussie Reds in the $20 to $30 category. 2nd ranked cuvée to their much vaunted "Langi" Shiraz. Tasted again 54 weeks later with totally consistent notes. Tasted beside Salo Syrah, from the much vaunted Hawkes Bay NZ District for Syrah. I preferred the Langhi. — 8 years ago
Really like this Aussie blend. A bit of musty horse barn on the nose. Smooth, dusty, long finish. Will buy again. Was on sale for $11.99 - great deal. — 9 years ago
Dark crimson - darker than you would expect from an Aussie Grenache. After the first glass straight out of the bottle I decided to decant which it needed. Dusty raspberry notes on nose and palate - very pure. A brilliant dense concentrated 100% Grenache from Australia’s master of alternative varieties - Steve Pannell. Although in Australia Grenache is not that “alternative “ as this wine comes from 70 year old bush vines in McLaren Vale. — 6 years ago
Beautifully smoooth Aussie Shiraz offering. Truly enjoyable :-) Great finish after a big mouthful of flavour As good as it gets in this price range — 8 years ago
Easily my favourite Aussie Riesling — 8 years ago
Somehow manages to be subtle for an untamed Aussie GSM. Amazing. — 9 years ago
Arguably the wine of the day in the Aussie icons tasting. The great thing about St Henri is that Penfolds lets the gorgeous old vine fruit speak instead of clobbering it over the head with American Oak. Some herbal/liquorice aromas. On palate mellowing black fruits, medium bodied with great length - superb persistence of flavour. At its peak IMO but will probably last for many more years- just becoming more savoury. — 9 years ago
Another aussie wine! Geez yup yup ripe fruit things going on but also yup yup there is a river bed flowing strong under it all...perhaps the...Margaret River? Lemon things. Stony things. Linen things it is fun and also not trying to not be new world if that makes sense. I can’t even this is goshdarntoheck good — 6 years ago
Gorgeous earthy perfume, Forest Floor - could be Burgundian. A Tawny edge to the colour. My 2nd favourite Aussie Pinot after the Bass Phillip Reserve. Savoury cherry nuances on the palate but overall more savoury than fruit driven. Light to medium bodied. Very fine Tannins with natural acid still present. I expected more mid palate fruit for what Phillip Jones described as “one of our best vintages” to that point. They have had better ones since IMO. I would not normally taste a BP Premium under 10 years (this being the first of 4) but having tasted this I wish I had had one say four years ago. In the category of wines I buy every vintage - like the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay. — 7 years ago
Tastes like a young Aussie Shiraz. Good fruit but not much complexity, lacking secondary notes. Screw cap. Part of a Garagiste mystery case. If I had another bottle I wouldn't open it for a few years. — 8 years ago
Aussie screwcap FTW - this is legit. Plenty of Syrah notes for only 8% of the blend. — 9 years ago
Beautiful Aussie style Riesling. Minerals and stone fruit in tight balance. Fantastic aperitif or with seafood/chicken @Leeuwin_Estate — 9 years ago
