Before phylloxera wiped out its vineyards, Málaga was considered one of Europe’s greatest wine regions and its legendary “mountain wines” were coveted throughout the world. In his memoirs, Hugh Johnson singled out an 1830s “mountain wine” bought at a Christie’s auction under the label Molino del Rey as the best wine he’d ever drank - and he’s had plenty. Taking its inspiration from Johnson’s account, Telmo Rodríguez’s Molino Real represents a groundbreaking effort to revive Málaga’s winemaking traditions and to explore the region’s potential for top quality sweet wines.
A “vino naturalmente dulce” or naturally sweet wine (not to be confused with Málaga’s also famous “vino dulce natural” a fortified style developed later in the 18th Century), Molino Real is made with Muscat of Alexandria grapes from 9 hectares of vines on steep slate slopes in Cómpeta in the Axarquía region. The grapes were sun dried - a process known as asoleo - to increase sugar concentration, fermented in 225-liter oak barrels and then aged for 20 months.

This a club member only wine sourced from their Two Blondes Vineyard and cellared in 225 liter barrels for 18 months. On the nose; bright cherries, blackberries, strawberries, ball park chewing gum, rose petals, potpourri, gravel and tobacco. The palate is lean but fresh & delicious. Bright cherries, strawberries, potpourri, pepper, light herbs, smoke, tobacco-cigar, dry stones, cedar, round fresh acidity, rich, lush, round long finish. This one is chug-able. Their Cabernet Franc is somewhere between Loire & Bordeaux in style. Photos of their tasting bar, tasting room and owner Greg Karrington's Master Sommelier degree. Perhaps one of the harder feats in life to accomplish. He and his partner Brandon Moss are co-owners and Winemakers. — 8 years ago
2016 vintage. Inédite, Corbières rouge. Another brilliant wine from this excellent estate. From a plot named "Les Amandiers" with 30 years old vines. A blend of Syrah (50%), Grenache (35%) and Mourvèdre (15%). Aged 18 months in 20 hl and 225 l French oak. Delicate extractions and low yields lead to amazingly refined, fresh and complex wine with velvety tannins and a long spicy finish. Terrific value. Highly recommended. Abv. 14,5%. — 5 years ago

Named after a Spanish rooster, this wine is a highly compelling blend of wine is composed of 50% Garnacha Blanca, 35% Malvasía, and 15% Viura sourced from head-trained vines gown in a mix of alluvial and calcareous soil from the municipalities of San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Briones with Rioja Alta. The three different grape varieties, harvested at different dates according to ripeness, come from the Leza, Ariasabal, Murmurón, El Sauco, El Bombón y Las and Tasugueras Vineyards. The wine was aged in 225 L New French oak barrels for eight months of lees aging and battonage. This wine opens with bright aromas of lemongrass, lychee, nectarine and star jasmine. Aromatically gratifying and compelling the wine constantly brings you back to the glass for more enjoyment. The unctuous texture entices as the silky wine glides along the mid-palate. Orange rind, Meyer lemon, Gravenstein apple pie and white rose flavors come to mind. This is an absolutely stunning bottling by the talented hands of Benjamin Romeo. Drink 2019-2028- 94 — 6 years ago
— 6 years ago

From Baden at Swiss border, hand-picked Pinot Noir grown on lime stone, fermented with natural yeasts and with 22 mo aging in 225 liter barrels. Red lightly viscous unfiltered; nose of ripe strawberries, chocolate, and earthy sulphury spicy notes - the good kind; although low on alcohol (12%) the taste is satisfying, has ample acids, and is carried into a long finish on the back of straw- and lingon-berries and a touch of oak-spices. — 4 years ago
🏅 Rating 93+/100 (4,35⭐)
Tasted from magnum.
Ruby color with tawny hue showing the age. First nose has a slight touch of iron. Fruit is ripe and sweet. Vegetable scent of tomato stems suggesting presence of Cabernet Sauvignon. Sandy tannins of Sangiovese. Amazing how bottle aging makes the wine so smooth and satin.
Mostly tertiary aromas, but very well holding the age and could last for at least 5 more years without any signs of decline
Elegant expression of famous Tignanello.
1981 was outshadowed by great 1982. It was 10th anniversary vintage and is considered a very fine one.
Key oenological data:
Average sugar content of grapes at harvest 21.00%
Average total acidity of the grapes 7.80%
Alcohol content after fermentation 13.00
Average fermentation temperature 28C
Length of fermentation 13 days
Acidity of wine after malo 5.90
Ageing in 225 litre barrels 20 months
Bottle ageing in our cellars 18 months

Charles strikes again.
I said weeks ago, I’d rather drink Charles Hendricks Pinot in futures @ $75 vs. the 09 Marcassin we had two weeks back @ $150+ winery or $225+ on the secondary market. This 14, while still young, proves that point and will only continue to get better.
It’s about as luxurious as Ca Pinot gets. Just supple, soft & elegant as body gets. Candied, floral fruits of ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, blue fruits, lean purple fruits, dry cranberries, strawberries, plums, delicate but darks spices, cinnamon stick, vanillin, nutmeg & touch clove, salted caramel, mocha powder, limestone & grey volcanics, dry crushed rocks hints of peppered grilled meats, fresh & dry tobacco, dry stems/twigs, sage dominated dry Provence herbs, splash of mint/eucalyptus, tree sap with bright candied, fresh & slightly withering florals of; dark, red, purple, blue set in a field of violets & some lavender. The acidity is perfect. The long finish is; extremely well balanced & polished, elegant, fresh, just the right amount of candied with a long, dark spice finish in the long set.
The 14 really started to excel after an hour plus in the decanter.
Photos of; the outside of the Hope & Grace tasting room in downtown Yountville where you will find Charles Hendricks wines. He makes Hope & Grace wines as well. One of my favorite paintings that used to sit behind their tasting bar but, is now in Charles house. It is very Pollock like! What a wine. I could taste the character of Pritchard Hill - this one being from the Gandona winery. Encosta means, roughly translated, 'hillside', or 'slope' in Portuguese. P.Melka is the wine maker and this is just the estate wine.
I have to say it is pretty darn good, and definitely has that magical Melka touch. Fragrant of decayed violet and dark chocolate covered pomegranate seeds, with a hint of game. Integrated, yet quite firm tannin, exhibiting notes of blue and black fruit, bright acidity, clove, cocoa, and a lifted feel in the pallet. The alcohol is 15.6%, but you don't entirely notice it. It is well hidden. I want to know how the $225 top estate wine is drinking then... — 8 years ago

This is a great value in Pinot noir. Rounded and smooth, with medium acidity and velvety tannins. There’s some crunchy red fruit to lighten it up, but wild blackberry, Asian five spice, cola, clove and that rich turned earth I get from Dundee hills are all here. The volume is a little turned up, but this was surprisingly very well balanced for a great value. Really enjoyed it. All fruit from their 225 acres of estate Pinot aged in 15% new oak for about a year. — 4 years ago
