Christmas drop 🎄 The 2012 GG's have been drinking quite well lately (the Dellchen's wonderful!), but this was somewhat disappointing. Despite the stony minerality which I love, I feel the wine isn't finessed enough. It's ripe, but doesn't quite have the precision and lightness to counteract. While there's heaps of fruit, there's also ample petrol characters. Perhaps it's in a odd phase. Hope to taste another bottle in the future. — 7 years ago

Great drop from a great year. 5 years ok it's just getting started and probably good for another 5 or 10. Tennis softening, deep rich flavours. Red berries. Medium pepper and spice. Can't wait to drink as it ages. — 8 years ago

Wow In a flight of chateau montelena and caymus 85s this drop kicked them out of the room. Hints of Brett but adds to the complexity of black olive, camphor, Dried fruits and herbs. Patrick Campbell made so many great wines and does not get enough credit this wine sings, bravo. — 9 years ago

10 year Bordeaux...Bravo. The tannins have settled somewhat with the result being that this wine's structure, acidity, frame and finish are all in alignment. Rich dark fruits,cassis and Christmas cake. Such a joyfully smooth drop. — 10 years ago

2005 vintage. From Jay. 2005 Bartolo Mascarello - Brief Note from Galloni Historical Retrospective Held in London April 26, 2016. Vintage was saved by technology. Weather radar showed that there were rain showers on the way and Maria Teresa choose to pick before the rain. Graceful wine. Lovely nose of pencil shavings and mountain flowers. Charming restrained nose of fruit. Great balance. Tannins have yet to fully resolve but are elegant. Great finish with medium plus length. When revisited 30 mins later it was starting to drop off. 92/100. Drink now to 2020.

90/100 This region is for me definitely. This is not as hedonistically upfront as the Cloudy Bay, more subtle but presents a better finish. You do however have to reach further for the nose.
Loads of tropical citrus, lime, pineapple, gooseberry, grapefruit as you would expect, though lots more on the palate than in the nose. Excellent mouthfeel, here it wins.
The finish is linear, no drop off and so scores the same as CB but a different experience.

09’ This is singing @Mike R Another wine from Mike- If this wasn’t the WOTN, it was damn close. Black fruits, black licorice, blackberry jam, floral notes, smokiness. This is a drop dead gorgeous wine. A very polished wine!! Especially from this vintage. There’s no need to hold onto this any longer. Drink them up in the next 10+ years. — 7 years ago

2013 vintage. I think it's just too hot to make a very fair assessment of this wine...big, round style. Extracted cassis, baked blackberry, over ripe blueberry, mullberry, cedar, white pepper, dried purple flowers, vague creaminess. Creaminess and ever so slight tannic greenness are competing with each other right now and seem a bit disjointed. The wine that gets better every vintage. Confections abound when popped and poured and then it settles into its floral/nutty/honey aromas beautifully. All of this framed by a slab of limestone. Also a verbena/green tea aroma adds complexity. Unbelievable texture. So silky and soft yet buffered by a taut spine of acidity that is so well integrated it only reveals itself on the finish. Great concentration Long finish with honey, tangerines and minerals. What finesse and sophistication here. Drop dead. — 9 years ago
