Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese Riesling 2020

9.2

Delicate nose of white flowers, stone fruit, hint of petrol; palate of peach, apricot, honey; classic; more concentration and complexity would push it higher, but it is enjoyable — 10 months ago

Tasted blind. Dark gold color. Heavy like motor oil in the glass. Sweet nose. Notes of apricot and spice. High-pitched, more so than a Sauternes. Guessed 70's German. — 4 years ago

Erdener Treppchen Kabinett Riesling 2018

Years ago used to treat myself to this maker once a year, but then my local store stopped bringing them in & I lost contact. Such a marvelous blend of concentration & finesse: Asian pear, ginger crystal, and white peach. Not a light bodied Kabinett, just gorgeous. Not a stand out vintage if I remember right but they are all pretty damn good. — 4 years ago

Goldkapsel Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2011

Last weekend turned out to be a 2011 extravaganza and thankfully, a rather pleasant one. Not my favourite vintage in Europe, with the Mosel churning out many wines that could occupy higher pradikat levels than stated. Nevertheless, the best examples had a ripe delicacy, showing lightness and freshness within the opulence. That was just exactly what the Prum GK portrayed - rich and earthy notes wrapped in crackling acidity. Pure aromas of mango, peach, orange, fresh quince, and cream, with a light honey note and lovely floral qualities. The palate manages to remain very juicy, despite the ripeness and botrytis. Immense weight and finish, as expected of a GK. Complains? I felt the botrytized notes could have come off a little cleaner on the palate. There is slightly too much musky-savoury element, although it does not disrupt the freshness of the wine. MO also detected a slight bitterness in the finish and she felt the minerality could be more pronounced, both points I don't really agree with but hey... she's got a better palate than me. — 6 years ago

Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett Riesling 2019

My first time trying one of the hotly anticipated 2019s from J. J. Prüm, this being the Kabinett from the Himmelreich vineyard in Graach. 2019 was a hot vintage which benefited from cooler temperatures and rain towards harvest in September, tempering already high sugars in many of the grapes. A degree of the crop had been lost both through hail in Spring and sunburn in August. Nevertheless, 2019 has been lauded as the vintage of the century, drawing comparisons to 2016 Bordeaux, among others - and is especially successful at the drier end of the classification. So, how does this wine from the Kabinett Prädikat fare?

It’s a featherlight Riesling, often the mark of this estate in any given vintage, but while airy and graceful, there’s tremendous intensity to the palate, great persistence and a very long finish. A touch reticent at this stage, but that doesn’t fully hinder the aromas of orange marmalade, white peach, blueberry, juniper and tomato vine,

Aaand my notes ended there - perhaps I was enjoying it too much 🫠😅 either way, this was a knockout Kabi!

I thought 2015 was the vintage of the century, but likely the goalposts are always moving forward...Marketing.

I think the positive notes you used to describe this wine are the same attributes that I think make 2019 a superb vintage for German riesling. The wines I have tried have been “airy, graceful, beautiful with intensity and persistence.” I think that describes the vintage character perfectly 👍

Dorsheimer Pittermannchen Kabinett Riesling 2019

🏅 Rating 89/100 (3,9⭐)

Off-dry Kabinett. Very floral, delicate. White flowers, honey. Stone fruit. On the palate has some citrus with light bitter finish. Petrol notes are very gentle and almost not traceable, just a hint. Gastronomic wine with only 8.0% Alc. and pleasant fruity sweetness, good for an easy apero or as an accompaniment for pan-asian / oriental food. Residual sugar is nicely balanced with signature Riesling acidity.

PITTERMÄNNCHEN is VDP.GROSSE LAGE classified South facing vineyard in Dorsheim, Nahe with clay slate soils. Spontaneous fermentation and maturation in big 1,200l barrels.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Riesling Goldkapsel 2006

At the 12th year since the wine was born, this gold cap doesn’t taste like an old Riesling at all. Yet, it doesn’t have the fresh tropical fruit punch experienced from the 2007 version. All that being said, this wine distinguished itself as a delicate artwork. It is a pristine raisin nectar bomb. It is so balanced, so precise, so tender, yet so concentrated. Everything, sweetness, acidity, and minerality have been integrated beautiful together over the years. This wine reminds me of how good a sweet Riesling can be without sticky viscosity. Serve closer to room temperature. — 7 years ago
