Turley

Delinquent Napa Valley Zinfandel 1998

This is a dessert wine from back in the day. Tasty, nice finish, but very simple. Not much more interest than a basic tawny with a Zin-tinged nose and even more candied cherry. I had hope that age would have brought some virtue. Alas, the finish is still going... — 6 years ago

Walter Hansel Winery

The Estate Vineyards Chardonnay 2014

This was one of our wedding wines. Rather nice to have a few bottles left over. This one was enjoyed on Cape Cod on July 4th. An accessible and definitively American wine. Rich, somewhat tropical but still elegant. It's gorgeous and made more so by virtue of the wonderful associated memories. — 6 years ago

Weingut Knoll

Loibner Loibenberg Smaragd Grüner Veltliner 2021

The unlikely winner of our lunch wine shootout by sheer virtue of being properly stored. I say “unlikely” because in my experience Gruner tends to be the lesser grape when presented with Rieslings. Plus, a youthful Smaragd typically isn’t up my alley - they’re usually too rich and oily for effortless drinking. Although admittedly so here, the Knoll still trumped the Rieslings for being fresher. I’d take exotic fruits, candied ginger, less acidity and oily texture any day over heavy petrol notes. But don’t get me wrong. The Knoll was still an excellent wine. It wasn’t just a case of “losers can’t be choosers”. It was layered and had plenty to offer over lunch. Air brought about some interesting lemongrass and kafir lime notes, as well as a stony minerality. In the end, I was grateful for its presence, shedding some light to an otherwise woeful wine showing. — 4 months ago

I agree about Gruner. Not one of my faves. Disappointing about the tainted Rieslings 😢

Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

En magnum. Quite good, but in the closed phase. 4+ hour decant and still quite reserved. My palate is blown at this point, but it is still quite good. Lots of tannins, but not much fruit at this point to fight through the tannins. Been holding this bottled for many years, but should have held off for a few more years. Patience is not my virtue. — 4 years ago

Régnié Gamay 2016

Simple, elegant, fruit-forward Gamay elevated to art by sheer virtue of its finesse. Just enough minerality to keep your face in the dirt and remind you that it’s still Burgundy. — 6 years ago

Hyde Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006

Stunning and vibrant Pinot Noir from Hyde Vineyard. Black cherries and earthy, tarry notes in the nose. Violets. Great acidity, dense fruit, firm tannin, long finish. Nice now but patience would be a virtue with this one. Great wine. — 4 years ago

Nickel & Nickel

C.C. Ranch Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Bottle a case on release of mixed Cabs from N&N. The first few bottles that we opened gave me buyers remorse. Wine was flat. As i got through the years, the wine developed beautifully. Now, this was my last bottle of the case. It was glorious. Tannins evened our and from nose to first sip and Long finish, it was a pleasure. Patience is a virtue. It’s true — 4 years ago
