Vindimian Rudi

Château de Montfaucon

Côtes du Rhône Red Rhône Blend 2011

Really nice color still, from a vintage lacking accolades, yet Rudi made a really fine little CdR this vintage, medium-long finish, very good! Cepage here is 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan, 10% Cinsault, 5% Counoise; in these earlier days, before Rudi segregated his Lirac fruit from his other CdR fruit (both in this CdR and in the “Baron Louis” CdR), this CdR was a screaming value with great quality; however, I now much prefer the basic Lirac and “Baron Louis” Lirac to the regular CdR still being produced at this domaine!! — 2 years ago

Wösendorfer Hochrain Smaragd Grüner Veltliner

One of the most profound & satisfying gruner’s I’ve had. Notes of white pear, daffodils, green peas, white pepper, with floral and almost marzipan qualities all come together harmoniously & dance on the tongue & drives home with an intense mineral backbone. Beautiful. — 7 years ago

Terrassen Federspiel Grüner Veltliner 2016

Was certain it was muscadet. Low weight, heavy acid. Pocket change flavor, all kinds of lemon, some peach no oak. Has a kind of color that implied possible lees or age to me so I guessed 2-3 years old with lees. No spice. This is a glugger — 9 years ago

Goldtröpfchen Spätlese Riesling 2011

Wine-guy lemonade!

This bottle is true to form. Bright with lingering acidity & slight effervescence, yet rounded with developing honeyed orange, candied apricot, and sharp green pear notes. Was curious on how 2011's were coming along so I pulled the cork. Recommended one serving per bottle.

You can tell this is an absolutely gorgeous wine but may be in a muted phase right now. Pure, pristine mineral. Nectarine. Cuts like glass. — 3 years ago

Good. A little bit of green apples on this, perhaps a little oxidized cause it felt like a lot older bottle but serious stuff — 5 years ago

Monsieur Le Baron de Montfaucon Vin de Pays du Gard Red Rhone Blend 2012

Lovely soft redfruits, great balance and restraint, a blend of 15 Rhône varietals (including white grapes), great acidity, a very fine southern Rhône rouge from a good vintage!! (Disclosure: My brother imports this wine and I am friends with Rudi, the proprietor of Montfaucon.) — 6 years ago

Schloss Lieser

Brauneberger Juffer Kabinett Riesling 2014

Petrol-forward, slightly oxidized nose. Massively floral, great ripeness. Peach, honey, golden apple, electric mouthfeel and taut with minerality. Impeccable concentration of fruit- such intensity yet so much delicacy. Superb with my green shrimp curry. One of my favorite producers from the Rudi Wiest portfolio, particularly for its value. — 8 years ago

Wösendorfer Kollmütz Grüner Veltliner 2015

Super saline and mineral pallet/nose give this grüner intricate interest. I suspect some would argue there is some fruit, but I'd disagree...well maybe except for honey, which is not a fruit :). We unfortunately had it at too high a temp, a sacrifice to Irma braking our fridge's chiller (and my patience). Live long and prosper 🖖 — 9 years ago

Hooked Riesling

Sure, it’s a gimmicky label, sure it’s a no name, importer brand Mosel- but for under 13$, a nicely balanced kabinet style ( but Qba) reisling. For the Mrs, rs & acid the right way. I’d be curious who supplies the grapes — 5 years ago

Weissenkirchner Achleiten Smaragd Riesling 2013

Can’t imagine paying $100+ for this, but it is a viscous, layered, tropical stunner. Pineapple and apricot spread to every corner of the palate with a long, luxurious finish. Teriyaki glazed pork? Soup dumplings? What to pair this with? Awesome wine with another fifteen years ahead of it. — 6 years ago
