Taillepieds Volnay 1er Cru 2023

9.8

Wow. This is one hell of a Taillepieds. Nose is deep, dark black cherry fruit with twizzler, mid season cherry with pitch perfect clarity. Taillepieds always brings the drama and this goes to 11. Dark roses, Dried and fresh. So complex and so darn dramatic, Gorgeous roundness to the nose. Just insane. 9.8 nose. Some wood spice, but more like shavings from 7th grade woodshop. Wow. That palate is just insane. It’s got the cherry fruit, sour, dark, mid season, dark red all on a chord progression and all at the same time. Cherry fruit, everything, everywhere, all at once. Unreal internal aromatic and it has a decadence but outlined by this tart cherry fruit that circles opulent black cherry fruit. Just stunning. More open than the Clos des Chenes. A genius wine. Equal to CDC in 2023. Wow this nose goes hard as air gets into it. My god this is hedonistic but also fresh and energetic like 2008 or 1996 but with the fruit of 2019. This is absolutely a showstopper. Gorgeous tannins. So well crafted. The purity is the star here as is the transparency. The nose goes hard after an hour. It’s hard to describe as it’s got a lot of “non wine” aroma. 9.8 nose. Heavenly. Super sweet and silky now. Gorgeous fruit and opulence. What a finish. Unreal blackberry and black cherry inner mouth aromas an hour in. So structured and young but just incredible. After a day this is just stunning. Deep, dramatic and juicy. Wonderful structure and sexy black cherry fruit. Silky as silky can be. — a month ago

Buntsandstein Pinot Noir 2022

Out of bottle this is built like a brick house. Stacked. Nose is lurid spices, cranberry, sour cherry, hint of va, mid season cherry and a gorgeous earthy and mineral sweetness. But has way more to say. Palate is massive. Huge tannins but super sapid and unreal density. But still remains so fine. But drying on finish for now but this will gain so much with air. I’ll be back. Hasn’t budged much after an hour. Back in the drugs it goes and see tomorrow. It’s evolving and there is. deep feel to it but the tannins are still a bit much. This got killer overnight. So juicy and clean and cascading fruit. Tannins integrated and sweet. 9.5 to 9.6. — 2 months ago

Les Narbantons Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2023

Killer nose that is deep and resonant. Unreal dark red cherries that border on black. Such purity. Just stunning. Nose is airy and so deep. Sick. Better aromas than 19 Narbantons. Blueberry, flowers, so lush, so deep. Just wonderful. 9.6 nose. Palate has insane energy and just absurd fruit. Sapid, energetic and so concentrated. Wow this is so good. The depth is off the charts and the tannins cut like a saber but remain velvety and sweet. What a wine. Stunning depth and freshness and red/blue/black fruits. My god the tannins on 23 Girards are stunning. This is a remarkable year for Girard. Unreal wine. — 3 months ago

Haven’t had in 6 months and it was closed then but wow the nose is wide open now. Gorgeous citrus, apricot, herbs and stones. Really aromatic and very compelling. Palate is very 21 with just “wake you up” acids, a chewy density, and maybe 70% mineral and 30% fruit. So pure and what a finish. This is much more open than in January. Unreal finish. Almost 2 minutes. Wow this is tangy, super juicy and ultra clean. What an amazing finish. Just gorgeous. — 9 days ago

Champans Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2023

Lyle Fass
9.6

Champans is always, to me, the most friendly and “win over people” type of Volnay 1er Cru. Nose is superb with clear mid season cherry, some sour cherry, some earth, some mineral and some licorice. Gorgeous wild mint and such a bombastic perfume. So so floral. Just so pretty. That palate is classic 23 Buffet with the sour/mid -season and late season cherry like a chord progression. Stunning internal aromas. Amazingly sweet fruit accented by sour cherry and wonderful, velvety and sweet tannins. It’s just so friendly yet super serious as well. Unreal finish that keeps pumping the sweetness. Superb acidity and freshness and the grip and structure is legit but my goodness the sweetness and general puppy dog friendliness of Champans is shining through here. Brilliant. Really well balanced and just a gorgeous, velvety and silken texture. Excited to see where air takes this. After 45 minutes the nose is crazy complex and so airy with all the cherry chords and mint and even some sweet herbs. 9.7 nose now. Wow the sweetness and high pitch are bananas. On day 2 the nose is much more integrated aand the limestone is so legit. The palate is sweet, fresh and has tons of energy. Long finish. — 22 days ago

Rhini Blauer Spätburgunder 2021

An amazing vintage here. Nose is a bit funky out of the gates but wow once it gets going it’s all red cherries, sour cherries, and wild herbs. So so good. Really lifted. Palate is mega closed but my goodness rhys is super precise and focused. Like a laser. Unreal freshness and acidity and barely ripe sour cherry and early season cherry fruit. Insane velvety and sour/sweet tannins. Wine as sweet tart. This needs air. It’s got the bones but I will check back in an hour or two. Oh this is getting better but it’s gonna be slow. Angular and dense but so balanced. That Rhini structure abounds. — 3 months ago

Huge expressive nose of milk duds, watermelon jolly rancher, sour cherries, dark cherries, lemon flower? Earth and mineral and stunning aromatic lift but is holding something back. Wow that’s kinky with unreal concentration and tiny berry fruit intensity. More complex. Darker red cherries, strawberry jam. It’s the texture, it’s the tannins, it’s the perfectly judged acidity. Woodshop aromas. The sweetness is so insane. It’s so elegant. The tannins are late breaking and fierce but sweet and pearly. — 3 months ago

Pommard Rugiens 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2023

This is the best wine William has ever made. I am blown away. Holy shit this is a new level for “The Kid.” Outrageous nose of late season red and black cherry fruit but what really stands out here is the absolute clarity. Wow it smells like God’s jelly donut. Unreal 9.8 almost a 9.9 nose. I am not joking. The depth and purity of the aromas is off the charts. Under all that fruit is stones. Those Pommars stones. Like a Pommard rolling stone. Wow. Just sick. There’s spice and herbals. My goodness this is elite. This is just incredible work. The palate is just a knockout. The ultimate power without weight but also with the ultra concentrated tiny berry intensity that comes from the best grapes on the best bunches on the best vines. Just incredible. Elegance and just incredible power and never never heavy. The tannins are ripe and fierce. Chewy and dense. It’s early but this is ridiculous. 9.7 for now. But it will go up. Oh wow the fruit is so sweet. Extraordinary length and freshness. — 12 days ago

Clos des Chênes Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2023

Glory is this wine. Just one of the best wines in Burgundy now. After the 22 I had large expectations and this surpassed them. Nose is just bananas. Not literal bananas. The other type of bananas. The most complex cherry diaspora. Sour, mid season, late season and black. Spice galore and florals up the wazoo. Earth, limestone, dead leaves, living leaves and wet leaves. The nose is a 9.8 on the pop and pour. Just insane. Wild mint. What stands out the most is the layering and the clarity. Also the breadth. Wow that inner mouth perfume and endless, boundless energy that has the same fruit energy as La Tache. What I mean by that is this wine, yes can be about minerals as CDC is rocky, but man the fruit in 22 and now 23 is just in another register. Sappy, poised and clear as the sky is blue on a cloudless day. Yes the tannins are firm but you know with air they will melt into the fruit. The nobility of this site never fails to blow me away. Unreal concentration and density and just insane length. The tannins are velvety, sweet and intense but so so high class. Nose has so much florality, spice and red cherry fruit one cannot believe it. This is just insane. It’s almost a perfect wine. The balance is just beyond and the structure is incredible. This is a 50 year CDC. What a finish. Let’s see where this goes. After an hour the nose is remarkable. So deep, so nuanced, so spicy, so floral. Provocative. Palate is silky, sweet and so dense. Pumps the fruit out like an old set of Wilson Puppies. Unreal balance and purity. But this is built like a brick house. Let’s see where this goes. Will unfurl more but it’s a slow one! The concentration and tiny berry fruit intensity is off the charts. Now after 17 hours open its nose is full blown complex and flat out stunning. The cherry trifecta of sour/mid season and black. Mint and bramble plus wonderful and gorgeous sous bois. Stoney as well. All velvety bramble and such elegant and ripe tannin. A wave. Stunning inner mouth aromas, tiny berry fruit intensity and stunning purity. This seems like it’s more classic than the 22. Even on day 3 this is stunning. Lost nothing. — a month ago
