Daumas Gassac

Mas de Daumas Gassac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2022

I love Mas de Daumas Gassac’s whites and know a lot of people who do. I also like their reds but know many people (some of the same) who do not. They find the Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the Languedoc to be not quite right. On this bottle, I think I’ve identified something I like in the reds. The Cab Sauv has some of the same taste profile of better Chilean Cab Sauv that I grew up drinking as the son of Chileans (before they served the international / Parkerized palate). Anyway, a young bottle, but enjoyable with ribeye steaks, sautéed mushrooms and sautéed spinach. It represents a field blend of 12-20 different varietals, mostly historically French, but from all the major regions. 76% Cab Sauv,, 5% Tannat, 4% Merlot, 3% Pinot Noir, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Syrah, 2% Cab Franc, plus ~4% other grapes from Italy, Georgia, Spain and France (the technical sheet identifies the Camenere as Chilean, but it is originally from France). — 6 hours ago

This falls in the category of excellent qpr. At roughly 10€, this a solid everyday drinker. Full bodied, good fruit and mouth watering acidity. Championed by Jeb Dunnuck who consistently gives this 95 points. Recommended. — 7 months ago

Domaine De La Grand'Cour (Jean-Louis Dutraive)

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Terroir "Champagne" Fleurie Gamay 2015

Leftovers from our 2nd Annual, “Bierock Bonaza: Let’s have some funza with Runza”.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of three hours. The 2015 pours a deep ruby with a slightly purple tinge and a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of lightly stewed, spiced strawberry, ripe fig, and cherry lozenges, red flowers, green herbs, with a touch of leather, and a mix of organic and inorganic rocky earth. Just the faintest hint of mouse. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. The alcohol is also medium+. Delicious. Drink now through 2030.

Terroir de Chablis Chardonnay 2022

Nose is a little reticent at first, giving shy whiffs of Granny Smith apples and crushed rock. Just the barest hint of Chablis “brothiness” as I like to call it. As it airs and warms, it’s a bit more forthcoming. In the mouth it’s on the lighter side, but certainly showing Chablis minerally character. Acids medium low. A nice aperitif Chablis but color me a bit disappointed, for now, given the producer. Will try to check back in after a few hours.

UPDATE: After several hours, showing noticeably more fruit and depth.
